New Orleans Rum: A Decadent History

New Orleans Rum: A Decadent History

Mikko Macchione

Mix yourself a Hurricane and see New Orleans through a glass of rum.Like a drunken Mardi Gras parade, the history of New Orleans lurches from electrifying highs to heart-rending lows. Through it all, good drink was a constant - especially rum. The victory at the Battle of New Orleans was sealed with a barrel of rum, and a half-hearted implementation of Prohibition a century later certainly didn't dampen the city's spirits. From priests making tafia to modern delights like Old New Orleans and Bayou, rum has always been an integral part of the funky, sultry, crazy story of the Crescent City. Longtime historian and writer Mikko Macchione presents a witty and informative history of the city and its love affair with the sweetest of liquors.

Melodic approaches to jazz improvisation volume 1 käsittelee improvisaation kaikkein perustavinta osa-aluetta: asteikkojen käyttöä sointujen ja sointukulkujen rinnalla. Melodic approaches to jazz improvisation volume 1 on ensimmäinen osa laajempaa kolmiosaista improvisaation eri osa-alueita käsittelevää kirjasarjaa.Kirjasta on saatavilla myös suomenkielinen laitos Lähestymistapoja improvisaatioon osa 1: Asteikot.

Unstable Neighbourhood Rabbit

Unstable Neighbourhood Rabbit

Oneiric, fabulist, hilarious, surreal. No single term seems to sufficiently contain Mikko Harvey’s delightful, cheeky, absurdist, inimitable debut poetry collection.A bomb and a raindrop make small talk as they fall through the air; a visit to the phlebotomist evolves into a nightmarish party; a boy notices himself turning into a piano key. Reading Unstable Neighbourhood Rabbit is like spending the day at a strange amusement park. At first the rides appear familiar—then you realize they possess the power to not only thrill and terrify, but destabilize your very notion of amusement. These poems veer sharply away from what’s normally expected of poetry, instead bringing readers to that darkened, awkward, interior space where we are free to be most ourselves.

Toward a Concrete Philosophy

Toward a Concrete Philosophy explores the reactions of Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse to Martin Heidegger prior to their dismissal of him once he turned to the Nazi party in 1933. Mikko Immanen provides a fascinating glimpse of the three future giants of twentieth-century social criticism when they were still looking for their philosophical voices. By reconstructing their overlooked debates with Heidegger and Heideggerians, Immanen argues that Adorno, Horkheimer, and Marcuse saw Heidegger's 1927 magnum opus, Being and Time, as a serious effort to make philosophy relevant for life again and as the most provocative challenge to their nascent materialist diagnoses of the discontents of European modernity. Our knowledge of Adorno's "Frankfurt discussion" with "Frankfurt Heideggerians" remains anecdotal, even though it led to a proto-version of Dialectic of Enlightenment's idea of the entwinement of myth and reason. Similarly, Horkheimer's enthusiasm over Heidegger's legendary post–World War I lectures and criticism of Being and Time have escaped attention almost entirely. And Marcuse's intriguing debate with Heidegger over Hegel and the origin of the problematic of "being and time" has remained uncharted until now. Reading these debates as fruitful intellectual encounters rather than hostile confrontations, Toward a Concrete Philosophy offers scholars of critical theory a new, thought-provoking perspective on the emergence of the Frankfurt School as a rejoinder to Heidegger's philosophical revolution.

Adorno's Gamble offers a startling reinterpretation of the evolution of Theodor W. Adorno's thought, usually seen as a mix of critical Marxism, Freudian psychoanalysis, aesthetic modernism, and Jewish tradition. Mikko Immanen argues for another, previously unacknowledged source of Adorno's thinking on instrumental reason, dialectic of enlightenment, and frailty of democracy: the intellectual underpinnings of Germany's "conservative revolutionary" movement of the 1920s. In a dramatic reappraisal of the leading light of the Frankfurt School, Immanen follows Adorno's path of philosophical development from the late Weimar era through years in exile to the postwar period, establishing his debt to thinkers of radical conservative bent. In particular, he focuses on Adorno's enduring, and daring, effort to harness two of the most infamous works from this tradition—Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West and Ludwig Klages's The Spirit as Adversary of the Soul—and to repurpose their reactionary teachings for emancipatory ends.

Something wicked—and monstrous—is stirring around the rugged Isgeri town of Saringallow, where the hated legacy of noble Chelish diabolists runs deep. With the recent disappearance of apprentices, the nearby menace of particularly grotesque goblins, and the unsettling buzzing coming from the old Sarini estate, Mayor Sandra Trinelli only knows one thing: she needs help, and fast! The heroes must confront one of these crises—or all three—if they hope to stem the darkness that looms. Gallows of Madness is a 64-page, highly versatile collection of three adventures for 1st-level characters. Geared toward beginning GMs and players while retaining challenging content for veterans, these adventures can be prepared quickly and run separately or in any order. Bonus content includes new monstrous foes and a gallery of NPCs to help connect the adventures, plus a gorgeous double-sided regional and miniatures-scale tactical map!
Pathfinder Adventure Path: The Flooded Cathedral (Ruins of Azlant 3 of 6)
As the adventurers work to track down the missing colonists, the trail leads to a nearby island. There, the adventurers discover the submerged ruins of a cathedral dedicated to a now-dead god that has become a lair of an ichthyic monster and its cunning minions. The adventurers must fight their way through flooded chambers and vicious monsters to find the kidnapped colonists and learn the greater threat to the region and to humanity as a whole. “The Flooded Cathedral” is a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game adventure for 7th-level characters. The adventure continues the Ruins of Azlant Adventure Path, a delve into the lost past of humanity’s first empire. Several new monsters, a look into the gods of ancient Azlant, and more information about the complicated construction of clockworks round out this volume of the Pathfinder Adventure Path. Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.
Human Behavior & the Corporate Social Responsibility of Firm Leaders
Economic analysis typically attributes differences in corporate social responsibility (CSR) between firms to either, 1) differences in beliefs concerning what companies should do, or 2) differences in the 'objective' situations faced by firms. Whether firm leaders should take a 'morally neutral' / instrumental view of stakeholders, or take an intrinsic view of stakeholders guided by a 'moral compass', is generally viewed as an exclusively normative issue. Given the assumptions concerning individual and firm behaviour from traditional economic theory, the instrumental and morally neutral perspective wins unequivocally leaving situational characteristics such as firm size, industry dynamics, and the ability to differentiate products as the only causes for the observed differences in CSR between firms that are explored.

It is a truism that religion has to do with social cohesion, but the precise nature of this link has eluded scholars and scientists. Drawing on new research in religiously motivated prosociality, evolution of cooperation, and system theory, this book describes how fluctuations in individuals' strategic environment give impetus to a self-organizatory process where ritual behavior works to alleviate uncertainties in social commitment. It also traces the dynamic roles played by emotions, social norms, and socioeconomic context. While exploring the social functions of ritual and revivalist behavior, the book seeks to avoid the fallacies that result from disregarding their explicit religious character. To illustrate these processes, a case study of Christian revivals in early 19th-century Finland is included. The thesis of the book is relevant to theories of the evolution of religion and the role of religion in organizing human societies.

For the past 60 years, Leo Bersani has inspired, resisted, guided, and challenged scholarly work in the fields of literary criticism, queer theory, cultural studies, psychoanalytic theory, and film and visual studies. Moving across an impressive range of sources, Mikko Tuhkanen seeks out the “fundamental notes”—the questions that we find and refind—in Bersani’s extensive oeuvre across the decades. The chapters explore Bersani’s engagement with psychoanalytic theory (Freud, Laplanche, Klein, Lacan), French and American modernist fiction (Proust, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, James, Beckett), poststructuralist theory (Derrida, Foucault, Deleuze, Guattari, Blanchot), queer theory (Butler, Edelman), and the visual arts (Caravaggio, Almodóvar, Pasolini, Malick, Dumont). This first introduction to Bersani's work provides a chronological overview of his thought and details his contributions to literary studies and critical theory.
