Fresh and cold, foaming from a carton or bottle, milk is one of nature's most nutritious foods. For this, we must thank the milk makers. In The Milk Makers, Gail Gibbons begins with the cow, describing its four-stomach method of producing milk, how it is milked on a modern dairy farm, and then how milk is transported to a dairy plant, processed, and loaded onto refrigerated trucks - with other dairy products - for delivery to stores. Step by step, Gail Gibbons' clear, carefully researched text and crisply colorful pictures tell the wonderful story of milk.

Milk Quotas

Milk Quotas

Since their introduction in 1984, milk quotas have become a prominent feature of the Common Agricultural Policy. The vigorous and yet at times questionable trade in milk quotas is a strong indication that its legal ramifications are underestimated at their peril. Indeed practitioners in this area cannot afford to ignore the astonishingly large number and high value of dealings in quota. Academics as well are no longer in doubt as to the importance of quota legislation and its ramifications. Milk quotas constitute a major and novel extension of Community power in the agricultural sector and represent a potent force in the development of Community law. Indeed, the Common Agricultural Policy gives rise to the single largest body of cases before the European Court of Justice with milk quotas taking a leading role. This indispensable and up-to-date practitioners' manual explores the influence that milk quotas have had on both EC and UK legislation. The author examines exactly how these quotas operate in relation to landlords, tenants, taxation and, consequently, rural culture itself. He goes on to consistently link the domestic effects of milk quota legislation to the European Court of Justice and identifies ways in which milk quota regulation is influencing other areas of EC law.

I. M. Lewis, anthropologist and historian, is widely considered to be the greatest researcher to chart the origins and development of Somalia. In this volume, established and emerging scholars review Lewis's work, along with the findings of others, and advance new, groundbreaking methods and unprecedented topics. Contributors tackle the impact of colonial powers, such as Britain and Italy; Somali poetic heritage and its relationship with politics; variations between northern/pastoral and southern/agropastoral populations within Somali culture; the significance of clanship, including its influence on livestock trading networks; the origin and nature of Somali "total genealogy"; the political future of the country following the breakdown of the centralized state; and the role of the Somali diaspora. Chapters explain "spirit possession cults," the study of which Lewis helped to establish, and the intricacies of Somali language, names, and terms of kinship.
