John Dardess has selected a region of great political and intellectual importance, but one which local history has left almost untouched, for this detailed social history of T'ai-ho county during the Ming dynasty. Rather than making a sweeping, general survey of the region, he follows the careers of a large number of native sons and their relationship to Ming imperial politics. Using previously unexplored primary sources, Dardess details the rise and development of T'ai-ho village kinship, family lineage, landscape, agriculture, and economy. He follows its literati to positions of prominence in imperial government. This concentration on the history of one county over almost three centuries gives rise to an unusually sound and immediate understanding of how Ming society functioned and changed over time. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1996.

The western reader is here presented with a biography of a major figure on the Chinese side in the crucial period of China's political contact with the western world, which describes a man of his own time and country, with his own background of education, endeavour and achievement and not merely a figure symbolic of Chinese obstruction of British purposes as he was seen from London or Hong Kong. This important work will be studied with interest by historians of both China and England and of Anglo-Chinese relations.
How can we qualify slowness in cinema? What is the relationship between a cinema of slowness and a wider socio-cultural “slow movement”? A body of films that shares a propensity toward slowness has emerged in many parts of the world over the past two decades. This is the first book to examine the concept of cinematic slowness and address this fascinating phenomenon in contemporary film culture.Providing a critical investigation into questions of temporality, materiality, and aesthetics, and examining concepts of authorship, cinephilia, and nostalgia, Song Hwee Lim offers insight into cinematic slowness through the films of the Malaysian-born, Taiwan-based director Tsai Ming-liang. Through detailed analysis of aspects of stillness and silence in cinema, Lim delineates the strategies by which slowness in film can be constructed. By drawing on writings on cinephilia and the films of directors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, he makes a passionate case for a slow cinema that calls for renewed attention to the image and to the experience of time in film.Tsai Ming-Liang and a Cinema of Slowness will speak to readers with an interest in art cinema, queer studies, East Asian culture, and the question of time. In an age of unrelenting acceleration of pace both in film and in life, this book invites us to pause and listen, to linger and look, and, above all, to take things slowly.
In the last seven centuries, many songs and poems have been composed about Taijiquan. These have played a major role in preserving the knowledge and wisdom of the masters, although in many cases, the identity of the authors and the dates of origin have been lost. For the last twenty years, Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming has translated many of these documents and according to him, he believes numerous are incomplete for reasons relating to: forgotten oral secrets, authors personal understandings narrowly focused and many documents are missing. Taijiquan Theory of Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is an attempt to join together the various theories on Taijiquan in one complete text. "Based upon my personal background and understanding, I have tried my best to compile the Taijiquan Theory and practice concepts in this book. I have attempted to make this effort as complete as possible". This book is structured with songs and poems, followed by the original Chinese text and any interpretation of the passage. All of the songs and poems have been written by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming. *About regulating the Body, Breath, Mind, Qi & Spirit*About Jin, Pushing Hands & Sparring*Taiji long and short fighting strategies*Relationship of Jin & Qi*Unification of the internal Qi & external physical manifestations of the Qi

Reactivation. Exciting. It's been years since John DiMeglio had a remote-viewing assignment from the military. He may feel a bit rusty, but it's nothing some focus and mental exercise can't remedy. Action is exactly what John needs. Kathryn and the kids would probably agree. This guy they got him working under, though... Creely is his name. Seems a nice enough guy, but John can't shake the feeling that something isn't adding up with this mission. Maybe he's just rusty. Or maybe it is Creely. And the shadowy presence keeping John from seeing something important on the other side isn't helping matters. More than anything John wishes he could talk to Kathryn about what's going on... But things aren't quite right there, either.
