A month after her 24th birthday, Lt. Mary Elizabeth Balster collapses among the rubble of a shelled supply room. Has the young nurse finally succumbed to the mounting emotional toll caused from months of caring for the sick and wounded just behind the front lines of General Patton’s Third Army? On the night of November 30, 1944, holed up in the Heinrich Himmler Barracks in Morhange, France, Lt. Balster’s evac receives a typical patient load (over 200 soldiers, including wounded enemy), but this time one of the admissions is a 19-year-old tanker she’d nursed back to health five months before in Normandy. The charge nurse on Surgical gently informs the lieutenant that the private is critical, admitted with two gunshot wounds and almost half his body consumed by burns. Rising determined to save him, Balster limps toward the shelled supply room determined to search for any blood plasma bottles still intact after Luftwaffe strafing. Recaptured from her mother’s reminiscences and letters home, N. C. R. Davis takes the reader through every heat-of-battle harrowing moment as Balster lived it, achieving a rare glimpse of one nurse’s point of view during the latter part of the European conflict. The book mixes Lt. Balster’s observations, memories, and dreams to re-tell the true story of a richly rebellious and intense woman trying to navigate her life and nurture her sanity while nursing the wounded and dying frontline soldiers of the Third Army. Her strong-willed, beguiling personality fosters the grit necessary for her success as a combat nurse, but these same characteristics cause two men to fall in love with her. And the personal cost of war comes to a heartrending conclusion, as she must choose one man over the other to save herself.

There are many bright and innovative individuals who grapple with numbers and mathematics. Yet astonishingly, in a world where numbers are so important, their difficulties have a remarkably low profile. In the educational world overall, there is very little discussion of how mathematically challenged individuals naturally think and learn. By comparison with dyslexia and literacy difficulties, the debilitating effects of dyscalculia and poor number sense - their implications for adult life, career prospects and household management - are too often ignored. When someone struggles with maths, it is often assumed they are just "not a numbers person". In reality, however, numbers and mathematics have not been presented in a way that matches how the individual thinks and learns. When this is done, mathematical ability can take off very quickly, and what was assumed to be a lifelong learning difficulty can become a thing of the past. In this book, former Special Educational Needs Coordinator and Davis Methods specialist Richard Whitehead explores how dyscalculic individuals typically think and learn, and why traditional approaches to mathematics instruction so often fail to reach these individuals. He reveals the core principles of the Davis Maths Mastery Programme in which he has specialised for the past two decades, and he provides a number of scripted procedures which he uses to help mathematically challenged individuals achieve new and unexpected success.

"My mother was the one to teach me about Magic; furtively in dark shadows. She taught me many things that year, about light and dark, and how to hide in illusions. But then, that was the year the Seekers came."Myanna is a third-generation merchant, set to take over her father's legacy. The only thing standing in her way appears to be politics: the regional warlords are renewing their battle against Magic and those who practice it. And as Myanna and her father know, any war is bad for business. An illusionist herself, and disguised as "Mick," her father's fictitious son, Myanna strives to clean up the mess left by civil unrest and those who hunger for power--only to find herself in a mess all of her own.Caught between good, evil, and fanatics who seem to have taken a side of their own, Myanna is in a world where enemies become allies, and friends betray friends. It is a world where nothing is as it seems, but is instead wrapped in illusion.

Tia and Luke Wright, teen kids of international doctor parents, are evacuated from Miami as a force 4 hurricane nears. Roads are flooding as they are taken northwest to safety at the home of strange, witch-like, Great Aunt Zillah. In Aunt Zillah's huge crowded attic, the two find an ancient, moldy Bible that glows oddly and smells horrible. When it falls open to the story of Noah, the kids are thrust back in time to that worst of all storms and floods From there the adventures never stop, alternating between Noah's wicked, flood-ready world, and the modern, desperate tragedy in Florida. The youths visit four critical times during Noah's epic. They also assist their doctor parents at field hospitals in their own storm and flood-ravaged time. Luke and Tia perform brave, compassionate, and heart-stopping actions in both eras, proving that the young have a great deal to give and to learn in all kinds of challenging situations.
