"There was a time when I thought that if I let the world go by, it would have no call upon me, but now I realize differently. And the fact that I shall soon be a father makes me more conscious than ever of the future." - Robert Douglas HarrisJuly 1944 On January 8, 1945, the Harris Crew was assigned to 550 Squadron at North Killingholme, England. For RCAF Flying Officer Bob Harris, RCAF Sergeant Tom Ditson, RCAF Sergeant Douglas Hicks, RAF Sergeant Gerard Kelleher, RCAF Flying Officer Gordon Nicol, RAF Sergeant Kenneth Smith and RCAF Flight Sergeant David Yemen, this move would signify the start of active service with RAF's Bomber Command. Though the Harris Crew's tour would be a brief one, the crew would participate in some of the most controversial raids of World War II and go to battle against Germany's top night fighter. Members of the crew would endure time as prisoners of war. For one, his injuries would lead him to become the youngest member of 'The Guinea Pig Club', a club airmen would hope never to join. For another member of the crew, his fate would be mired with a puzzling war crime. Weaving together letters written home by Flying Officer Robert Harris and first-hand accounts written by Sergeant Douglas Hicks along with Squadron records and historical archives, the author has created a riveting snapshot of the remarkable Harris Crew and their short but harrowing time with 550 Squadron.

For years, John has served as a pastor to a socially progressive church of artists in Los Angeles. Cloistered in this bubble, he was floored by the outcome of the 2016 election, a shock that continues to compound. Waking to how entwined American Christianity has become with anti-Christ ideologies, seeing that even his own ""inclusive"" community propagates shame while preaching love, John resigns from the church. He flees--LA, his wife, his entire web of relationships, all of which were glued to the church. As he sets out on this wandering road trip, John seeks to fathom the depths of his own complicity in systems of abuse, his own shame, by writing to his father, the conservative evangelical. In journaling, John hopes to discover what relationship could exist between this unbendingly legalistic man and the first authentic self he's ever shown. On this walkabout, John logs new and old friendships, adventures, and traumas that push him to sublime joy and his faith to the brink. In his writing, John begins to make sense of his swirling present and complicated past to see if he might reconcile to all those relationships he fled. He sketches what of his faith might remain after the deconstruction--a Heavenly Father untangled from his earthly one, what of God is left after shame is gone.

In Runner as Hero, Jay Kimiecik becomes an athlete again—in his case, a masters runner—as a way to revive his life. Kimiecik explores the world of aging, training, and performing through a self-experimental, self-reflective lens— merging science, mythology, and performance psychology. On his heroic journey, Kimiecik talks to aging experts, scientists, top-performing athletes, and the ghost of legendary Steve Prefontaine. Kimiecik's keen observations of everyday living and irreverent style take him on a journey to find the hero within. The result is a fascinating, inspiring tale about how the life as an athlete can serve as a motivational metaphor for feeling alive and achieving nearly anything.
