Court research is a well-known field within classical Sociology of Law, and particularly within Scandinavian Sociology of Law. One of the main aims of this report is to highlight the type of court research that is being conducted, and has been conducted, within Sociology of Law as well as to present some of the empirical results that over time have emerged from research pilot projects on norm implementation and norm formation conducted at a court in southern Sweden during 2010-2011 and 2012, and followed up and continued during 2015-18. Furthermore, Sociology of Law has continued this important cooperation with courts in southern Sweden through internships for one semester and thesis writing by our Sociology of Law and Criminology students in studying and learning in Swedish courts.

Why do some proposed norms become accepted by the international community while others do not? This thesis investigates this central question using two normatively charged international issues – disaster risk reduction and climate-induced migration – as vehicles for explanation. While climate-induced migration attracted much attention in the years 2007–2008, the norm acceptance process was stymied and stalled before it had a chance to gain broad acceptance in the international community. Disaster risk reduction reached a more successful outcome with the international community agreeing to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015 and with recognition by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change. This thesis draws on theories on norm dynamics to understand these contrasting outcomes. Most importantly, the study argues that existing literature on norms have not sufficiently accounted for contingent factors. This thesis suggests a way to theorize contingencies and to understand how they can influence the norm emergence process. In doing so, it provides new knowledge on how norms emerge, and how they become or do not become accepted in the international system. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the characterizations of real normed spaces as inner product spaces based on norm derivatives and generalizations of the most basic geometrical properties of triangles in normed spaces. Since the appearance of Jordan-von Neumann's classical theorem (The Parallelogram Law) in 1935, the field of characterizations of inner product spaces has received a significant amount of attention in various literature texts. Moreover, the techniques arising in the theory of functional equations have shown to be extremely useful in solving key problems in the characterizations of Banach spaces as Hilbert spaces.This book presents, in a clear and detailed style, state-of-the-art methods of characterizing inner product spaces by means of norm derivatives. It brings together results that have been scattered in various publications over the last two decades and includes more new material and techniques for solving functional equations in normed spaces. Thus the book can serve as an advanced undergraduate or graduate text as well as a resource book for researchers working in geometry of Banach (Hilbert) spaces or in the theory of functional equations (and their applications).

Die Studie untersucht die religios-ethischen Rahmenbedingungen und sozialen Erscheinungsformen des Aufstiegs stadtischer Eliten im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert. Sie geht dabei davon aus, dass die Beziehungen der wirtschaftlich fuhrenden Familien zur lokalen Kirche, zu den Pfarreien, Stiften und Klostern ihrer Heimatstadt und des naheren Umfeldes, wesentliche Funktionen bei der Etablierung einer sozialen Fuhrungsposition innerhalb der stadtischen Gesellschaft erfullten, wahrend der zeitgenossische Diskurs in Theologie und Kanonistik eine eher restriktive Ethik stadtischer Berufe und kaufmannischer Praktiken formulierte. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Armut gehort zu den zentralen Bestandteilen gesellschaftlichen Selbstverstandnisses: Wer gilt als arm und wer nicht? Wer ist unterstutzungsberechtigt und in welcher Form soll Hilfe gewahrt werden? Soll der Staat diese Unterstutzung zentral verwalten oder nur den geeigneten Rahmen fur private Hilfe schaffen? Eine besonders intensive Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Fragen fand am Ubergang vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit statt: Mit den beschleunigten gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozessen anderte sich hier auch die Wahrnehmung von Armut sowie die Massnahmen der Armenunterstutzung bzw. der Bettelbekampfung. Veranderte Fursorge- und Armutskonzepte schlugen sich in neuen normativen Vorgaben nieder, die wiederum die Fursorgepraxis beeinflussten. In diesem Spannungsfeld von Norm und Praxis untersucht der Band die Genese von historischen Vorstellungen und Handlungen in ihrer wechselseitigen Beziehung. Neben rechtshistorischen, konfessionellen sowie kommunalen Ansatzen thematisieren die Studien dabei auch das Scheitern normativer Vorstellungen im alltaglichen Handeln.

John Gibbons presents an original account of epistemic normativity. Belief seems to come with a built-in set of standards or norms. One task is to say where these standards come from. But the more basic task is to say what those standards are. In some sense, beliefs are supposed to be true. Perhaps they're supposed to constitute knowledge. And in some sense, they really ought to be reasonable. Which, if any of these is the fundamental norm of belief? The Norm of Belief argues against the teleological or instrumentalist conception of rationality that sees being reasonable as a means to our more objective aims, either knowledge or truth. And it tries to explain both the norms of knowledge and of truth in terms of the fundamental norm, the one that tells you to be reasonable. But the importance of being reasonable is not explained in terms of what it will get you, or what you think it will get you, or what it would get you if only things were different. The requirement to be reasonable comes from the very idea of what a genuine requirement is. That is where the built-in standards governing belief come from, and that is what they are.
