Understand and assess the design, delivery, and efficacy of orally administered drugs A practical guide to understanding oral bioavailability, one of the major hurdles in drug development and delivery, Oral Bioavailability: Basic Principles, Advanced Concepts, and Applications is designed to help chemists, biologists, life science researchers, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacologists, clinicians, and graduate and students become familiar with the fundamentals and practices of the science of oral bioavailability. The difference in rate and extent between a drug taken orally and the actual amount of a drug reaching the circulatory system, oral bioavailability is an essential parameter for determining the efficacy and adverse effects of new and developing medications, as well as finding an optimal dosing regimen. This book provides a much-needed one-stop resource to help readers better understand and appreciate the many facets and complex problems of oral bioavailability, including the basic barriers to oral bioavailability, the methods used to determine relevant parameters, and the challenges of drug delivery. In addition, this comprehensive book discusses biological and physicochemical methods for improving bioavailability, integrates physicochemistry with physiology and molecular biology, and includes several state-of-the-art technologies and approaches?Caco-2 cell culture model, MDCK, and other related cell culture models?which are used to study the science of oral bioavailability.
Oral Arguments and Coalition Formation on the U.S. Supreme Court

Oral Arguments and Coalition Formation on the U.S. Supreme Court

Ryan C. Black; Timothy R. B. Johnson; Justin Wedeking

The University of Michigan Press
2014
nidottu
The U.S. Supreme Court, with its controlled, highly institutionalized decision-making practices, provides an ideal environment for studying coalition formation. The process begins during the oral argument stage, which provides the justices with their first opportunity to hear one another's attitudes and concerns specific to a case. This information gathering allows them eventually to form a coalition. In order to uncover the workings of this process, the authors analyze oral argument transcripts from every case decided from 1998 through 2007 as well as the complete collection of notes kept during oral arguments by Justice Lewis F. Powell and Justice Harry A. Blackmun. Both justices clearly monitored their fellow justices' participation in the discussion and used their observations to craft opinions their colleagues would be likely to support. This study represents a major step forward in the understanding of coalition formation, which is a crucial aspect of many areas of political debate and decision making.

Oral Poetry and Somali Nationalism

Oral Poetry and Somali Nationalism

Said S. Samatar

Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
This book explores the influence of oral poetry on Somali politics. By reconstructing the history of the Somali nationalist resistance movement, mainly through the use of political oratory in verse form by its leader, Sayyid Mahammad 'Abdille Hasan', the 'Mad Mullah' of British history, Said Samater shows how an indigenous resource can be harnessed in a non-literate society, not only as a medium of mass communication but also as a tool for acquiring political power. He traces the intimate correlation between language, politics and oral poetry and seeks to suggest to students of African societies ways of examining indigenous forms of communication used by traditional African creators of large-scale organisations in the absence of writing, to influence public opinion. The book is an important contribution to the history of the Horn of Africa and its new material on the role of oral literature in a non-literate society will interest linguists, sociologists and anthropologists, as well as students of folklore and comparative literature.
Oral Culture and Catholicism in Early Modern England

Oral Culture and Catholicism in Early Modern England

Alison Shell

Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
After the Reformation, England's Catholics were marginalised and excluded from using printed media for propagandist ends. Instead, they turned to oral media, such as ballads and stories, to plead their case and maintain contact with their community. Building on the growing interest in Catholic literature which has developed in early modern studies, Alison Shell examines the relationship between Catholicism and oral culture from the mid-sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. In order to recover the textual traces of this minority culture, she expands canonical boundaries, looking at anecdotes, spells and popular verse alongside more conventionally literary material. In her archival research she uncovers many important manuscript sources. This book is an important contribution to the rediscovery of the writings and culture of the Catholic community and will be of great interest to scholars of early modern literature, history and theology.
Oral Epics of Central Asia

Oral Epics of Central Asia

Nora K. Chadwick; Zhirmunsky Victor

Cambridge University Press
2010
pokkari
Originally published in 1969, this book consists of a revised version of Dr Chadwick's section on the oral literature of the Turkic peoples in The Growth of Literature with supplementary material on the results of research in the Soviet Union by Professor Victor Zhirmunsky. This literature is of the greatest interest and variety, and not excessively 'strange' to readers of European oral literature. It was produced by nomadic peoples with well-developed traditions of narrative heroic poetry. Dr Chadwick paraphrases and analyses the more important epics; and Professor Zhirmunsky adds a study on epic songs and their singers on the processes of oral transmission. This is a fascinating study that will be of particular interest to scholars of comparative literature and of the origins of literature generally; but it should also be read by anthropologists and scholars of folklore.
Oral Tradition and Written Record in Classical Athens

Oral Tradition and Written Record in Classical Athens

Rosalind Thomas

Cambridge University Press
1989
sidottu
Despite its written literature, ancient Greece was in many ways an oral society. This is the first serious attempt to study the implications of this view. Dr Thomas stresses the coexistence of literacy and oral tradition in Greece and examines their character and interaction. Concentrating on the plentiful evidence from Classical Athens, she shows how the use of writing developed only gradually and under the influence of the previous oral communication. Drawing on anthropological discussion, the author isolates different types of Athenian oral tradition, building up a picture of Athens’ traditions about its past and examining why they changed and disappeared. This study provides crucial insights into the methods and achievements of the Greek historians. It also has major implications for the interpretation of ancient literacy.

Oral Tradition and the New Testament

Oral Tradition and the New Testament

Rafael Rodriguez

T. T.Clark Ltd
2013
sidottu
The last three decades have seen an explosion of biblical scholarship on the presence and consequences of the oral expression of tradition among Jesus' followers, especially in the earliest decades of the Common Era. There is a wealth of scholarship focused on ‘orality'. This scholarship is, however, abstract and technical almost by definition, and to date no introductory discussion exists that can introduce a new generation of biblical students to the issues being discussed at higher levels of scholarship. Rafael Rodriguez address this gap. Rodriguez adopts a fourfold structure to cover the topic, beginning with basic essentials for further discussion of oral-tradition research and definitions of key terms (the ‘what'). He then moves on to discuss the key players in this area (the ‘who') before examining the methods involved in oral-tradition research among New Testament scholars (the ‘how'). Finally Rodriguez provides examples of the ways in which oral-tradition research can bring texts into clearer focus (the ‘why'). The result is a comprehensive introduction to this key area in New Testament studies.

Oral Tradition as a Living Tradition in Greek Poetics
Oral Tradition as a Living Tradition in Greek Poetics describes the process of memorising and performing songs and hundreds of verses using Homer as the paradigm for Greek bards of Greek poetics and song. Tony Malliaras completed this paper at the University of Melbourne in 2016 during his Honours in Musicology degree trimester.
