Presidential Transitions

Presidential Transitions

A presidential transition has a major impact on the life of an institution. Hundreds of presidential transitions take place annually, and when they are not amicable and carefully orchestrated, they can scar both the institution and the president. Sanaghan, Goldstein, and Gaval estimate that more than one-third of the presidential transitions in higher education are involuntary and have a negative effect on the institution. This book is designed to provide assistance to presidents, trustees, faculty, and other important stakeholder groups and help them avoid the pitfalls of poorly managed transitions. The authors discuss how, with proper planning, care, and execution, this presidential passage can be an opportunity for a transitioning president, and those who surround him or her, to write a positive chapter in the campus history. Readers will discover that appropriately addressing the anxiety that accompanies major transitions_for both those joining the institution and those already present_is essential. Dozens of presidents, chancellors, board members, and other senior executives were interviewed for this book. Each major chapter includes selected personal observations, from these interviews, which illustrate the critical issues addressed in the book.

Amid the chaos of battle and the harsh conditions of prisoner-of-war camps, tens of thousands of soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies made controversial decisions to switch their allegiances. Building upon his 2020 work, Changing Sides: Union Prisoners of War Who Joined the Confederate Army, Patrick Garrow explores the other side of this overlooked aspect of Civil War history. Significantly expanding on previous scholarship around "galvanized Yankees," Garrow begins his study with an overview of Civil War prisons as a whole. He outlines unsavory conditions endured by prisoners of war on both sides, including a lack of proper shelter, food, potable water, and medical care. Notably, Garrow argues that the deplorable conditions of these army prisons were not the only motivator that fueled soldiers' decisions to switch sides as the war waned. Garrow investigates service records, pension files, period newspapers, and regimental histories to uncover the complex motivations of Confederate prisoners of war who joined Federal forces. He documents the individual histories of twelve distinct infantry and calvary regiments, contextualizing the wartime climate, struggles, and political leanings of the soldiers grappling with survival and allegiance during the Civil War. Alongside Garrow's first volume, From Gray to Blue is an insightful addition to existing Civil War scholarship that will engage and inform both history scholars and general readers.

This book mainly focuses on why data analytics fails in business. It provides an objective analysis and root causes of the phenomenon, instead of abstract criticism of utility of data analytics. The author, then, explains in detail on how companies can survive and win the global big data competition, based on actual cases of companies. Having established the execution and performance-oriented big data methodology based on over 10 years of experience in the field as an authority in big data strategy, the author identifies core principles of data analytics using case analysis of failures and successes of actual companies. Moreover, he endeavors to share with readers the principles regarding how innovative global companies became successful through utilization of big data. This book is a quintessential big data analytics, in which the author's knowhow from direct and indirect experiences is condensed. How do we survive at this big data war in which Facebook in SNS, Amazon in e-commerce, Google in search, expand their platforms to other areas based on their respective distinct markets? The answer can be found in this book.

27 Days is a taut and topical political thriller narrated in laconic noir fashion by veteran LA PI Nick Crane. In the spring of 2019, Nick is on the run in the Pacific Northwest, pursued by a cabal of wealthy right-wing power brokers and domestic terrorists (the Principals) led by Marguerite Ferguson and Desmond Cole. Nick has clashed with Marguerite and her crew in the past, and she wants him abducted so that she can personally "close his eyes forever." Things get worse. Nick's close friend and business partner Bobby Moore is kidnapped by Marguerite and the Principals. Nick is then informed that he has twenty-seven days to surrender to Marguerite. If he does not turn himself in, Bobby will be sent to Scorpion prison in Egypt to be tortured and murdered. If Nick surrenders, however, Bobby will be released. Help appears in the form of a young, idealistic female FBI agent named Carrie North who wants to arrest Marguerite for conspiring to commit domestic terrorist operations against the United States. Nick and Carrie join forces and the race against time to rescue Bobby Moore begins. And what a race it is Marguerite and company are the toughest foes Nick has ever faced and he must dig down deeper than ever before to have any chance of surviving. Praise for 27 DAYS: "Moore skillfully delivers in the rat-a-tat, take-no-prisoner style of Spillane and Hammett, daring you to turn the page and see what happens next." -Charles Salzberg, Two-Time Shamus Award nominee for Swann's Last Song and Second Story Man "Patrick H. Moore has crafted a gripping neo-noir thriller. The characters ignite your curiosity, and the story compels you to keep turning the pages. PI Nick Crane, hard on the outside, compassionate within, is truly a justice warrior and is brilliantly suited for these uncertain times. Can't wait to see this as a TV series or movie. Haven't enjoyed a detective novel this much in a long, long time." -Max Myers, Award winning author of Boysie Blake: Problem Solver "Patrick H. Moore delivers a dark masterpiece here, a brawling, gunfire symphony dripping with ominous overtones. A contemporary western, a compelling and intricate mystery, a social allegory of the oldest sins of humankind-this book has it all. Take note: Patrick H. Moore has entered the big leagues." -John Nardizzi, Shamus Award finalist for The Burden of Innocence "Patrick H. Moore has done it again with 27 Days, his latest offering in the explosively entertaining Nick Crane series. This time Moore's complicated tough-guy PI Crane finds himself in the crosshairs of a domestic terrorist organization whose motto is Make America Safe Again. What follows is a blisteringly taut page turner with loads of engaging attitude plus blind side twists that Moore delivers with the authority of a pro investigator." -Michael D. Sellers, Award Winning Director of Eye of the Dolphin "Readers looking for unrelenting suspense and fascinating well-developed characters will find it all here, as the bodies pile up and the action cascades in unanticipated twists that will keep you riveted until the final page." -John Brown, Los Angeles Private Investigator "This red-hot page turner careens through the underworld of a divided America, sparing no one as Nick Crane races the clock against domestic terrorists. Wall to wall heart-pounding action, riveting dialogue, and a dark vision of our country, you'll be left breathless when you finish." -Kirk Sanders, Silicon Valley Technologist

Eight years after he and his team liquidated Frank Constantine, a murderous military shrink and close personal friend of Miles Amsterdam, Nick Crane finds himself abducted, beaten and threatened with rendition to a black site in Egypt if he refuses to join the Principals' cause, which includes attempting to incite anti-Muslim violence in every major American city. Crane, however, is rescued by his close friend and business partner, Vietnam War vet Bobby Moore, and the war is on. Packed with well-drawn characters, relentless action, and razor-sharp narration, Rogues & Patriots is a scintillating sequel that builds on the momentum of its predecessor, 27 Days. Get your copy of Rogues & Patriots today and start on an adrenaline-fueled journey through a world where the line between hero and villain blurs, and only the brave dare to challenge the status quo. Critical Acclaim for Rogues & Patriots "Nick Crane is the kind of guy you can count on. He's smart, tough, and persistent, a throwback to the classic American PI, in the mold of Marlowe and Spade, the kind of guy who runs into the burning building rather than hit the fire alarm. So, be prepared to buckle up for this wild ride." -Charles Salzberg, Three-Time Shamus Award nominee, author of Man on the Run, and winner of the Beverly Hills Book Award "In Rogues & Patriots, LA PI Nick Crane's courage and cunning are put to the test as he battles sinister super patriots. A heart-pounding tale of espionage, friendship, and one man's unwavering resolve against dark forces." -Michael D. Sellers, award winning-writer and director of Eye of the Dolphin "Moore has produced a thought-provoking and suspenseful thriller as PI Nick Crane squares off against a creepy cabal of paramilitarists intent on taking power. Set against the intensifying political divides of our time, Rogues and Patriots builds the action and plot twists with masterful, page-turning precision while offering an insider's portrayal of the investigator's world and the desperate, colorful characters who inhabit it." -John Brown, Los Angeles private investigator

This book discusses the Reduced Instruction Set Computer architecture, a technique to streamline instruction execution. Sometimes, RISC is said to stand for "Relegate Important Stuff to the Compiler," since the compilation process is done offline, and then the code is run. The time penalty paid at compile time is paid back by faster code execution. RISC machines place more burdens on their compilers. The alternative to RISC is CISC - Complex Instruction Set Computer. An example would be the legacy Intel x86, IA-32 instruction set. RISC involves a series of architectural features to enhance the throughput of operations. RISC has become a mainstream architectural feature in modern processors.

Embedded systems have elements of hardware and software, and these are brought together into a working system. The systems engineering process, from requirements to testing and post-deployment support is discussed. There are known approaches that work. Software is a different animal than hardware, but the top-level principles for developing and testing derive from the same principles. Programmable hardware, in terms of FPGA's and SoC's introduce complexity, but can be addressed by the same engineering best practices.
Tracks along the Ditch, Relationships between the C&O Canal & the Railroads.
This book explores the interaction of the various transportation technologies, driven by the profit motives and political situations of the time. The interaction of the Canal and the Railroads with the National Road is also touched upon. When it was constructed, the canal was based on tried and proven technology, and had an extensive history in Europe. The railroad was new, untried technology. At its inception, it was not clear if locomotives or horses would be used on the railroad. The C&O Canal owed its existence to the much earlier Patowmack Canal Project, championed by George Washington. Interestingly, the C&O Canal did not go from the Chesapeake not to the Ohio. Perhaps we should call it the Georgetown and Cumberland Canal. It was supposed to go to Pittsburgh as well.

This is the story of the King’s Own Calgary Regiment. Beginning in the last years of collective innocence before the Great War, it follows the regiment to Vimy Ridge, through the short years of peace to Dieppe and the Italian Campaign, through the establishment and maintenance of reserve and militia force, and into the Cold War. Onward is a soldier’s story; mundane, heroic and tragic. This book explores not only the actions of the regiment but also the efforts of civilians to become warriors, to maintain their ties to home during the rigours of war, and the often-rocky return to civilian life. It explores peacetime, when the regiment struggled to maintain active reserves with aging equipment and minimal support. It places the King’s Own Calgary Regiment within the context of Canada’s army, tracing its relationships with brigade mates, supporting artillery and engineers to provide a complete and fascinating history. Regimental history does not begin with the first shot of a battle, nor does the story end when the fighting stops. Onward is a thoroughly researched and captivating chronicle of the Kings Own Calgary Regiment and its soldiers in peace and war.

Rich in very diverse railroad history CSX Transportation (CSXT) is the largest eastern railroad and also one of the safest in the country. CSXT is the end result of over 150 years of railroad evolution in the United States. The largest part of CSXT consists of elements of the Chessie System and the Seaboard Coast Lines. Dozens of "fallen flag" lines such as the Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, Western Maryland, Atlantic Coast Line, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac, Family Line, s and many more make up the modern CSXT.CSXT's rail spans the United States east of the Mississippi exclusive of New England. The northern portion, the Chessie system heritage serves the industrial northeast and the coal fields of Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. The southern section, from the SCL, handles minerals, chemicals and ocean ports. The building blocks of CSXT are the history, roadbed, and hard work of hundreds of predecessor roads, from the very beginning of flanged wheel on iron rail in America. From a 50 year old SW1200 workhorse switching cars in a yard, to mile-long unit coal trains headed by 15,000 horsepower of modern AC traction, CSXT never sleeps. CSXT uses locomotives from major United State's manufacturers General Electric (GE) and Electromotive Division (EMD), as well as new-comer NRE. The CSXT fleet of locomotives at the end of 2018 numbered around 4,000 locomotives. As this book was being prepared, CSX has 3873 units on its roster, with 800 being stored. That gives some 13,225,000 raw horsepower available. This is a data book, not a color picture book, to keep costs down. There are numerous websites and books with nice color pictures of CSX locomotives mentioned in the Reference and Resources sections.

Darwin's Luck

Just how far did Charles Darwin's luck - both good and bad - affect his life and scientific discoveries? One might make a case for saying that Darwin's life was dogged by ill-luck (or perhaps ill-fortune is more appropriate). His mother died when he was seven; he was sent to a school at which he 'learnt little'; he left Edinburgh Medical School after two years, unqualified. He undertook a five-year voyage although he was prone to sea-sickness; his girlfriend (of whom there is evidence he was very fond) married someone else a few months into this voyage. He was affected by ill-health throughout much of his life. One of his children appears to have been mentally handicapped and this child, and also his beloved Annie, died in infancy. In addition to all this, his brother became addicted to drugs. On the other hand one could argue that he had a privileged and fortunate life - perhaps the more common view. At a number of key points in his life he made a choice, or others made a choice, or circumstances occurred, that profoundly influenced the path that he took. There is a school of thought, one that this book investigates, that although Darwin came to the right conclusions, he did not actually follow the right path in getting there. While his science was sometimes flawed, he had the distinct knack of good instinct. Whilst on his voyage to the Galapagos vital evidence that would have led to his theories becoming clearer quite literally slipped through his fingers - Galapagos turtles were caught, examined and their shells thrown overboard. Had he been more thorough, Darwin may have noticed that the clues to his theory of evolution were on these very shells.

In this highly original book, Patrick O'Neil analyses the catalysts of the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe and offers explanations for these events. The exceptional case of Hungary is used to support theoretical concepts regarding the transition in Eastern Europe using new empirical evidence and institutional theory. The Hungarian transition from communism is distinct in that the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party was the initiator of its own transition but also acted as its own greatest enemy. This book provides a detailed analysis of the internal reform movement within the Hungarian Communist Party and its role in the incremental transition to democracy in the late 1980s. The author utilises party archives and primary interviews with important figures in the Communist Party to examine the effect of institutional relationships on the collapse of the authoritarian order. He also emphasises the role of reform circles in accelerating the disintegration of the Communist Party in Hungary. The book concludes that the way in which an autocratic order perpetuates itself affects the manner of its decline and the new system that takes its place. This authoritative book will be welcomed by academics and students interested in the politics of transition both in Hungary and Eastern Europe and the politics of the demise of communism in general.
