Unsettling the Settler Within

Unsettling the Settler Within

Paulette Regan; Taiaiake Alfred

University of British Columbia Press
2011
pokkari
In 2008 the Canadian government apologized to the victims of the notorious Indian residential school system, and established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission whose goal was to mend the deep rifts between Aboriginal peoples and the settler society that engineered the system.Unsettling the Settler Within argues that in order to truly participate in the transformative possibilities of reconciliation, non-Aboriginal Canadians must undergo their own process of decolonization. They must relinquish the persistent myth of themselves as peacemakers and acknowledge the destructive legacy of a society that has stubbornly ignored and devalued Indigenous experience. Today's truth and reconciliation processes must make space for an Indigenous historical counter-narrative in order to avoid perpetuating a colonial relationship between Aboriginal and settler peoples.A compassionate call to action, this powerful book offers all Canadians – both Indigenous and not – a new way of approaching the critical task of healing the wounds left by the residential school system.

American Indian Themes in Young Adult Literature

American Indian Themes in Young Adult Literature

Paulette F. Molin

Scarecrow Press
2005
sidottu
This book analyzes American Indian characters and themes in young adult literature, outlining plots and evaluating content from a native perspective. Teachers, librarians, parents, and young adult readers will find essential analytical information about a cross-section of literature with American Indian protagonists, narratives, and settings. Reviews of young adult publications with American Indian themes are also examined, demonstrating how too many reviewers reinforce, and even honor, stereotypical works. Divided into three sections centering on a range of fiction and nonfiction featuring richly diverse tribal groups across a variety of settings and time periods, the book begins with contemporary selections, examining young adult fiction by non-Indian authors as well as a growing number of native authors. The next section is devoted to historical fiction, the most popular American Indian-themed novels for young adults. The last section examines nonfiction work, including memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, and poetry. A rich bibliography leads readers to other resources.
Cuentos from Long Ago

Cuentos from Long Ago

Paulette Atencio

This bilingual sampler of southwestern tales, legends, and myths offers the modern reader wisdom passed down for hundreds of years. The themes of these stories are universal, love and its costs, forgiveness, good versus evil, but the voices, images, and incidents are unique to the Southwest. Set in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and northern Mexico, this timeless material offers lessons about life and how to triumph over its hardships: from making a bargain with the devil to gaining peace through true love; from dealing with inexplicable, even supernatural events to accepting special gifts that transform pain into joy; and from overcoming jealousy, anger, or stinginess to accepting others just as they are. Moving stories of the first farolito as well as other Christmastime stories evoke children's wonder at the season's simplest gifts. Throughout the volume, stories simultaneously instruct, console, and even amuse us, such as the accounts of the impoverished hunter who, for lack of a bullet, shoots a deer with a cherry pit and then harvests a crop of fruit from the animal; or the penniless young man trying to win over the family of his loved one who heeds a voice that tells him soon he 'will be sad but glad' if he picks up stones on his journey to her house. These cuentos continue a rich oral tradition in which stories appeal to our emotions and their impact is experienced long after the telling.
The Whiteness of Power

The Whiteness of Power

Paulette Goudge

Lawrence Wishart Ltd
2003
pokkari
This work examines the way in which much "third world" aid, far from contributing to the prosperity of recipient countries, helps to shore up global relations of domination and subordination. In particular, Goudge focuses on the role played by "race" in discourses and practices of development, and on the impact of unacknowledged - and often unconscious - assumptions of white, Western superiority. For example, the unequal distribution of resources that results from global power imbalances is often attributed to the inferior capabilities of the black poor. Goudge worked for some years as a volunteer in a "third world" country - in her case, Nicaragua - and this book is the result of her subsequent reflections and research. The core of her evidence comes from in-depth interviews with development and aid workers, as well as her own experiences and diaries. She also explores other related texts to illustrate that development and aid practitioners and agencies do not operate in a vacuum, but are a part of a pervasive discourse of superiority and inferiority. She submits her material to stringent analysis and finds much evidence of unconscious attitudes of superiority - with uncomfortable echoes of the assumptions of the colonial epoch. Goudge questions her own beliefs and actions as much as those of others. Indeed it is her contention that in scrutinising the motivations of those of us whose intentions are good, we can discover a great deal about the global operations of the power of whiteness.

"Oh, how I wished I could've told her what had happened. How I wished I could've let go and allowed the tears to spill. But I knew that if I had cried, Mama would've asked me what the matter was. And if I had told her the truth, she would've said that I was lying. And if she thought that I was lying . . . well, you know the rest. Still, I wonder . . . did she know? Did anyone know? Didn't everyone know?"The story of Lucy Green Eyes, as depicted through actual events, chronicles the early life of Merlene McDaniel, a young girl who is given away at birth to be raised by her grandmother. From an early age, Merlene discovers that her well-being is not contingent upon the nurturing of her guardians, but rather on her ability to cope with the stains of illegitimacy, molestation and abandonment. Although many of her days are spent dodging the stinging switches of an overly-strict grandmother, yearning for the embrace of a part-time mother, hoping for a smile from an oncoming stranger, or running from dirty old men, Merlene determinedly rises above the adversities in her pathway, all in the name of self-preservation, while maintaining a lying grin to uphold her brave fa ade.

A women's Brokeback Mountain. The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; the United States expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine to cover South America; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for gross indecency under Britain's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wilde's imprisonment. It is a chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. All profits are going to Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center, Ventura County, CA. (the first and only no-kill animal shelter in Ventura County). For further info please contact the author on Facebook.
