Christology and the Synoptic Problem

Christology and the Synoptic Problem

Peter M. Head

Cambridge University Press
1997
sidottu
This book makes a major contribution to the ongoing debate about the synoptic problem, especially concerning the question of which gospel was written first. The scholarly consensus, developed over two hundred years of discussion, has favoured Markan priority and the dependence of both Matthew and Luke upon Mark. In an ongoing contemporary revival of the Griesbach hypothesis, some scholars have advocated the view that Mark used, conflated and abbreviated Matthew and Luke. The author explores the role played by arguments connected with christological development in support of both these views. Deploying a comparative redaction-critical approach to the problem, Dr Head argues that the critical basis of the standard christological argument for Markan priority is insecure and based on anachronistic scholarly concerns. Nevertheless, in a through-going comparative reappraisal of the christological outlooks of Matthew and Mark the author finds decisive support for the hypothesis of Markan priority, arguing that Matthew was a developer rather than a corrector of Mark.
Tort Law and Social Morality

Tort Law and Social Morality

pokkari
This book develops a theory of tort law that integrates deontic and consequential approaches by applying justificational analysis to identify the factors, circumstances, and values that shape tort law. Drawing on Kantian and Rawlsian philosophy, and on the insights of game theorist Ken Binmore, this book refocuses tort law on a single theory of responsibility that explains and justifies the broad range of tort doctrine and concepts. Under this theory, tort law asks people to appropriately incorporate the well-being of others into the decisions they make, explains when that duty applies, and explains the scope and limits of that duty. The theory also incorporates a theory of the evolutionary development of social values that people use, and ought to use, in meeting that duty and explains how decision-making from behind the veil of ignorance allows us to evaluate the is in light of the ought.

The Archaeology of Syria

The Archaeology of Syria

Peter M. M. G. Akkermans; Glenn M. Schwartz

Cambridge University Press
2004
sidottu
This was the first book to present a comprehensive review of the archaeology of Syria from the end of the Paleolithic period to 300 BC. Syria has become a prime focus of field archaeology in the Middle East in the past thirty years, and Peter Akkermans and Glenn Schwartz discuss the results of this intensive fieldwork, integrating them with earlier research. Alongside the major material culture types of each period, they examine important contributions of Syrian archaeology to issues like the onset of agriculture, the emergence of private property and social inequality, the rise and collapse of urban life, and the archaeology of early empires. All competing interpretations are set out and considered, alongside the authors' own perspectives and conclusions.
Theory of Dislocations

Theory of Dislocations

Peter M. Anderson; John P. Hirth; Jens Lothe

Cambridge University Press
2017
sidottu
Theory of Dislocations provides unparalleled coverage of the fundamentals of dislocation theory, with applications to specific metal and ionic crystals. Rather than citing final results, step-by-step developments are provided to offer an in-depth understanding of the topic. The text provides the solid theoretical foundation for researchers to develop modeling and computational approaches to discrete dislocation plasticity, yet it covers important experimental observations related to the effects of crystal structure, temperature, nucleation mechanisms, and specific systems. This new edition incorporates significant advances in theory, experimental observations of dislocations, and new findings from first principles and atomistic treatments of dislocations. Also included are new discussions on thin films, deformation in nanostructured systems, and connection to crystal plasticity and strain gradient continuum formulations. Several new computer programs and worked problems allow the reader to understand, visualize, and implement dislocation theory concepts.
The Mystery of Mind

The Mystery of Mind

Is a human being really the composite of a body and a soul? The author of this book believes that there is a conclusive argument to show that this is not so. If you wonder why, this book is for you. Alternatively, if you think the author could not possibly be in the right, but would want to find out where he might have gone wrong, this book is also for you. However, this is definitely not a book for those who are afraid of the strange neighborhood of truth as against their familiar circle of falsehood. But the author is not an atheist. He contends that a materialist theory of mind militates only against the existence of disembodied souls. It does not militate against one's belief in God. If you think this position is interesting, you may also want to read this book.
The Seventeen Executions of Signore Don Vashta
Sixteen executions have failed. The seventeenth is about to begin.Beal devoted his life to the study of eliminating convicted felons, but the notorious Don Vashta is the greatest challenge any executioner can face: an immortal criminal who always rises from the dead to sin again. A short story chapbook about a job that turns into a friendship, and a friendship that becomes an obsession.

Hitman Keith Murphy is on the run after a botched job. He's bodypacking a magic bullet, fleeing an apocalyptic cult of necromancers, and wishing like hell his partner Danny Roark hadn't chosen to go AWOL. Flying solo, Keith's left with a single plan that might keep him alive: return to the Gold Coast and do his best to lie low.Keith's not been home for sixteen years, but nobody's pleased to see him. His ex-boss Sabbath wants to torture Keith for leaving, his ex-girlfriend is running the club where local demons and fey trade in dark desires, and his best friend is threatening to break Keith's kneecaps just for crossing the city limits. When a cult sorcerer tracks him down, Keith's forced to cut a desperate deal that buys him a little time--he'll trade his skills as a killer for six months of sanctuary. Problem is, Keith doesn't work alone, and he's always let Danny Roark handle the magic. That means going up against dangerous sorcerers and demons with nothing but guns, gumption, and any reluctant allies Keith can scrape together to back him up.

Nutrient Cycling and Limitation

Nutrient Cycling and Limitation

Peter M. Vitousek

Princeton University Press
2004
pokkari
The availability or lack of nutrients shapes ecosystems in fundamental ways. From forest productivity to soil fertility, from the diversity of animals to the composition of microbial communities, nutrient cycling and limitation are the basic mechanisms underlying ecosystem ecology. In this book, Peter Vitousek builds on over twenty years of research in Hawai'i to evaluate the controls and consequences of variation in nutrient availability and limitation. Integrating research from geochemistry, pedology, atmospheric chemistry, ecophysiology, and ecology, Vitousek addresses fundamental questions: How do the cycles of different elements interact? How do biological processes operating in minutes or hours interact with geochemical processes operating over millions of years? How does biological diversity interact with nutrient cycling and limitation in ecosystems? The Hawaiian Islands provide the author with an excellent model system for answering these questions as he integrates across levels of biological organization. He evaluates the connections between plant nutrient use efficiency, nutrient cycling and limitation within ecosystems, and nutrient input-output budgets of ecosystems. This book makes use of the Hawaiian ecosystems to explore the mechanisms that shape productivity and diversity in ecosystems throughout the world. It will be essential reading for all ecologists and environmental scientists.

Twentieth-Century German Political Thought

Twentieth-Century German Political Thought

Peter M. R. Stirk

Edinburgh University Press
2006
sidottu
Germany, as Europe's most powerful state, has a political significance which underlines the importance of twentieth-century German political thought. Yet this tradition has been poorly represented in academic literature. This book offers: *an account of German political thought emphasising its diversity and contested nature *an overview of the subject that allows access to relatively unknown figures as well as the 'names' of the tradition (Weber, Schmitt, Arendt, Habermas) *a demonstration of the political significance of figures better known in other disciplines including law and sociology The book is organised chronologically, with a series of recurrent themes providing analytic unity: (i) the nature of politics (including political vocation and leadership, and definitions of politics), (ii) collective identity, (iii) the rule of law, (iv) the role of the state, (v) the role of political parties and the nature of parliamentary democracy, (vi) state intervention in society and the economy, and (vii) the international order. Pedagogical features include a glossary of German terms and a substantial set of biographical notes identifying the major theorists referred to in the text. Key Features: *Challenges established perceptions by presenting German political thought as a contested tradition *Presents a rich picture of German political thought by covering a wide range of theorists *Its broad chronological range provides the first overview of 20th-century German political thought in one volume
