My mother was worried sick about me. She thought it would be a good idea for my brother Johnny to come and stay with me and Louis. She believed that Johnny would be able to protect me. I felt a little safer with Johnny there even though I still cried myself to sleep every night. One day Johnny told me he was leaving and going back to Gary. Instantly, I felt the fear rushing back into my body. He must've gotten into it with Louis. Johnny said he couldn't stay there because Louis had a bad attitude. My children don't often ask me about their father. Maybe it's because they're grown now, and they somehow knew not to ask when they were younger. I did love him. And my children are here because of him. I'm thankful that God saved me and preserved my life in order for me to take care of my children. Maybe I forgave him because of them.

"We all have our own prisons." Healy Ferguson knows all about prisons, both the real and the emotional kind. Paying your dues to society doesn't always mean you've paid your dues to yourself, and often the price you exact on yourself far exceeds the crime. Valerie Bishop is caught in the emotional prison of post-traumatic stress disorder, unable to venture more than a few feet out her back door. Shadowy moments from a night she can't remember bombard her without warning, keeping her trapped between the painful past and a future seemingly without hope. But God promises to repay the years that have been lost; for those who trust in Him, He promises refreshing, life-giving rain. Will Val and Healy trust to see God's perfect plan, or will they choose the chains that hold them back?

A world where nature has claimed the streets of London... where ageless people are perilously addicted to sucking marbles... and where the deaths of three men from another world threatens the order of the universe... In this, his debut novel, Julian Shaw has created a life-affirming and enchanting parallel universe, remarkable for its torrential bursts of action and overwhelming floods of emotion.________________________________When Gareth Edwards dies in a train crash, he emerges in The Meadow, a realm existing somewhere between life and death. Hunted and on the run, he finds refuge with a travelling circus and journeys with them across the splendour of this strange world, where pubs organise rebellions, cave dwellers archive Earth's disasters - and where a network of monasteries are commissioning expeditions into the Welsh mountains that are too dangerous to speak of.Gareth joins one of these expeditions, only to find something yet more perilous waiting for him - something with origins that reach beyond this world and into the trauma of his past.

On the 24th of February 2007 my husband, Stuart, drowned himself at sea, leaving me widowed with two young daughters aged six and four. I knew it wasn't an accident, even though the medics and police never suspected suicide. Stuart had been talking about ending his life for a year. His most recent suicide attempt had been only three weeks earlier. Afterwards, he explained that day as the most peaceful day of his life. Sitting next to the dam, he smoked his last cigarette. He drank a hundred sleeping pills and did a final check to make sure everything would look like an accident. The last thing he remembered was swimming out into the crystal clear water. He said that he was no longer scared of dying, that there was nothing scary about it. Living was the scary thing. It Rains in February: A Wife's Memoir of Love and Loss is the true story of a husband's depression and obsession, not only with another woman but also with ending his life. In this honest and heartfelt narrative, Leila Summers weaves a compelling tale of the year that led up to Stuart's suicide and the grief, profound loss and self-discovery that followed. Although each suicide is unique, this book gives the reader an insider's view from one perspective by way of authentic letters and email messages. This book deals with the subject matter of extramarital affairs, depression, suicide, death, grief, bereavement, loss and coping with death and young children. It may be helpful to those who have experienced a suicide in the family, the loss of a loved one to suicide, or those who are dealing with depression or the depression of a loved one. It is not meant to offer any form of advice and is based solely upon the author's personal experience.

___ See the British year afresh and experience a new way of connecting with nature – through the prism of Japan’s seventy-two ancient microseasons. Across seventy-two short chapters and twelve months, writer and nature lover Lev Parikian charts the changes that each of these ancient microseasons (of a just a few days each) bring to his local patch – garden, streets, park and wild cemetery. From the birth of spring (risshun) in early February to ‘the greater cold’ (daikan) in late January, Lev draws our eye to the exquisite beauty of the outside world, day-to-day. Instead of Japan’s lotus blossom, praying mantis and bear, he watches bramble, woodlouse and urban fox; hawthorn, dragonfly and peregrine. But the seasonal rhythms – and the power of nature to reflect and enhance our mood – remain. By turns reflective, witty and joyous, this is both a nature diary and a revelation of the beauty of the small and subtle changes of the everyday, allowing us to ‘look, look again, look better’. It is perfect gift to read in real time across the British year. ___ ‘A fresh new look at the microseasons of nature’s calendar, seen through Lev Parikian’s eyes – with his usual humour, attention to detail and beautifully written prose.’ Stephen Moss ‘Buy this book. Plant it somewhere handy and whenever you’re in need of a “spark of joy” pick it up and read a few pages. Its wit will make you smile. It will transport you to a wilder, gentler, more beautiful world.’ Ann Pettifor

If I can't physically be in the Indian Himalaya - neck-deep in all its adventure and romance - the next best thing is to go there mentally. In the pages of The Rains of India, a new novel by the former Boulder, Colorado, local) climber Jesse Guthrie, I see dusky sun-rays kissing Hindu temples, waves tumbling alongside beach-side bungalows in Goa, and Sherpas winding up frosted peaks. This suspenseful and touching love story follows a young American and his travels and travails abroad, both in the mountains - including a dangerous ascent of the sacred peak Shivaling - and in matters of the heart. Throughout this page-turner, Guthrie weaves together unexpected plot turns, poignant dialogue, and an alpinist's passion for the Himalaya. His words flow easily from one adventure to the next as the reader enjoys the ride.
