The Civil Rights Act and the Battle to End Workplace Discrimination
Raymond F. Gregory

On the fiftieth anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, Raymond F. Gregory evaluates our progress towards the full implementation of one of the law’s key provisions: Title VII, which prohibits discrimination in the workplace. Gregory looks at key litigation as the law has come to include discrimination based on more than just race, but on gender, age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. From the segregationist policies of the past to lingering workplace oppression in the form of sexual harassment, age discrimination, and religious conflicts, the places we work have always been the scenes of some of our greatest civil rights battles. This study of the landmark cases and rulings, and debates surrounding workplace discrimination of all kinds sheds light on the cultural tensions we grapple with in America. Gregory also looks at the broader history of oppression suffered, recognized, and overcome, in the 50 years since this country passed its Civil Rights Act. In addition to a detailed history of the legal history of civil rights and America’s workplace discrimination, this book also outlines positive ways forward for our society as we continue to diversify and redefine what it means to be respectful of our fellow citizens’ most inalienable, protected, and sacred rights.

Surface Preparation Techniques for Adhesive Bonding
Raymond F. Wegman; James Van Twisk
William Andrew Publishing
2012
sidottu
Surface Preparation Techniques for Adhesive Bonding is an essential guide for materials scientists, mechanical engineers, plastics engineers, scientists and researchers in manufacturing environments making use of adhesives technology. Wegman and van Twisk provide practical coverage of a topic that receives only cursory treatment in more general books on adhesives, making this book essential reading for adhesion specialists, plastics engineers, and a wide range of engineers and scientists working in sectors where adhesion is an important technology, e.g. automotive / aerospace, medical devices, electronics. Wegman and van Twisk provide a wealth of practical information on the processing of substrate surfaces prior to adhesive bonding. The processing of aluminum and its alloys, titanium and its alloys, steels, copper and its alloys, and magnesium are treated in the form of detailed specifications with comparative data. Other metals not requiring extensive treatment are also covered in detail, as are metal matrix and organic matrix composites, thermosets and thermoplastics. This new edition has been updated with coverage of the latest developments in the field including the sol-gel process for aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel, atmospheric plasma treatment for metals, plastics and rubbers and treatments for bronze and nickel alloys.
There was a time, not long ago, when the only treatment options considered to be worthwhile for patients requiring psychiatric care were the 50-minute hour on the one hand, or full-time hospitalization on the other. Most of us were convinced in those days that treatment could, and indeed should, take place with a minimum of involvement by the patient's family. Nor did we really consider that the community in which a patient lived was a significant contributor to either his illness or its cure. These naive assumptions were strongly challenged, of course, be ginning with the questions of social psychiatrists in the 50s and con tinuing with the quiet growth of the patients' rights movement. Thus it is no mere coincidence that when the community psychiatry movement emerged in the mid-60s as a powerful force for profound change in our traditional practice, the concept of partial hospitalization, which can be traced back at least 30 years, became a symbol of the new social psychiatry. Partial hospitalization had singular advantages well attuned to the times: it did not force a separation between the patient and his family; it cost far less to deliver than inpatient care; and it avoided the stigma of institutionalization while still providing far more care than the traditional psychotherapeutic hour. In a few years' time, several well controlled studies documented that virtually all patients who were cus tomarily treated on an inpatient basis could be effectively managed and treated in a day hospital.

Each chapter opens with a brief topic outline and concludes with "Take-Home Messages" and suggestions for further reading. New to This Edition: *Reflects many years of scientific and theoretical advances. *Chapters on psychological theories, personality, and physical health. *New organizing concepts: religious meaning systems and the multilevel interdisciplinary paradigm. *Additional pedagogical features, including end-of-chapter "Take-Home Messages" and engaging topic boxes. *Descriptions of cutting-edge research methods. *Increased attention to multicultural issues.

This 496 page memoir chronicles my life as a teenager and how the Marine Corps not only changed my life forever, but prepared me for a long career in law enforcement. I chronicle every assignment in almost six years as a Marine, then every assignment during my 29+ years as a cop. The candid stories told are both harrowing and humorous and involve true life incidents that include drugs, assaults, rape, murder, and death. This unique book covers two careers that are rarely written as one, and shows the influence that my family background had in becoming a Marine, and how that experience influenced my long law enforcement career.
