Friedrich Schiller ist bei seiner Kant-Rezeption nicht nur von seinem Dresdener Freund Christian Gottfried Korner unterstutzt worden. Auch auf kompetente Belehrungen und Anregungen seitens des Jenaer Philosophieprofessors Karl Leonhard Reinhold konnte er stets zahlen. Reinhold fuhrt ihn ab 1787 an kantische Schriften heran und konfrontiert ihn mit illuminatischen Geschichts- und Aufklarungsideen. Nach dem Antritt seiner Professur steht Schiller unter dem Einfluss des praktischen Teils von Reinholds System der Elementarphilosophie. Kaarlo Ignatius (1876-1953) on kiinnostava ja merkittävä historian henkilö, taitava lääkäri ja kirurgi. Hän on vaikuttanut Suomen terveydenhuollon ja nimenomaan kirurgian kehitykseen, toimien lääkärinä niin rauhan kuin sodan aikana Kajaanissa ja Mikkelissä. Päämajakaupunki Mikkelissä hän toimi 17. sotasairaalan ylilääkärinä. Ennen antibioottien aikakautta 1930-luvulla Ignatius teki vaativia operaatioita muuan muassa rakentaen potilaalle ruokatorven käyttäen ohutsuolisiirrettä. Kirjassa on välähdyksiä suvun historiasta ja myös päämajakaupungin elämästä sen traagisissa vaiheissa. Värivalokuvat ovat kirurgi Risto Ignatiuksen arkistosta.

Meie kirjanduse klassikute Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldi ja Lydia Koidula seitse aastat kestnud kirjavahetust, millest on säilinud kokku 94 kirja, on võimalik lugeda kui põnevat kiriromaani ajast, mil eesti romaan oli veel sündimata. See ületab kirjanduslikult väärtuselt nii mõnedki hilisemad proosateosed ja viib meid autentse kultuuriloolise dokumendina vahetult eesti kultuurielu arengu keeristesse.Seltskonnaelust tagasitõmbunud Võru linnaarst Kreutzwald on Koidula kirju nimetanud oma elu ainukesteks valgusepunktideks. Teda võlusid Koidula siiras imetlus, emotsionaalsed pihtimused ning elavad ja vaimukad kirjeldused Tartu elust. Noor kirjaneitsi Koidula, kes oli rakkes Postimehe toimetustöö, laulupeo korraldamise ja eesti teatri rajamisega, sai vanemalt ja kogenumalt kirjasõbralt häid nõuandeid eesti keeles luuletamiseks, kaastunnet ja tuge eluraskustes ning võimaluse arutada kõiki päevapoliitilisi küsimusi nagu võrdne võrdsega. Mõlemad said sellest kirjavahetusest inspiratsiooni oma loometööks, samuti on see andnud ainest hilisematele ilukirjandusteostele.Käesoleva väljaande aluseks on kirjandusmuuseumis koostatud Kreutzwaldi kirjavahetuse viies köide (1962). Vajadust mööda on kirjatekste redigeeritud, täiendatud on kommentaare ja illustratsioonide valikut. Raamatu lõpust leiab lugeja kirjandusteadlase Sirje Oleski järelsõna "19. sajandi parim eesti romaan", nimeregistri, sõnaseletuste ja illustratsioonide loendi.

Reinhold Niebuhr remains at the center of a national conversation about Americas role in the world, and commentators with divergent political and religious positions look to his 1952 work, The Irony of American History, in support of their views. In this study, Scott R. Erwin argues that an appreciation of Niebuhrs theological vision is necessary for understanding the full measure of Irony and his perspective on life more broadly. Such a study is important because many individuals reading Irony today fail to acknowledge the central role that his Christian beliefs played in his writings. Niebuhr described his theological vision as being in the battle and above it, and it was this perspective that led Niebuhr, in Irony, to assert that America must both take morally hazardous action in combating the aggression of the Soviet Union and engage in critical self-evaluation to prevent the country from assuming the most odious traits of its Cold War foe. Niebuhr developed his theological vision over the course of the 1930s and 1940s through engagement with Christian doctrine, as most readily seen in his academic works such as The Nature and Destiny of Man, and with current events, as seen in his many journalistic writings during this period. By focusing primarily on Niebuhrs writings between 1931 and 1952, Erwin traces the development of his Christian interpretation of human nature and history, establishes how it informed his theological vision, and reveals how that theological vision underlies his writings on current affairs.
