This is the first comprehensive monograph devoted to New York and San Francisco-based artist Renee Green. Over the past 20 years, through film, video, sound art, photographs, prints, banners, texts, websites and ephemera, Green's work has comprised complex, multi-layered archive-like installations, employing a vast array of sources, which always urge viewers to become active participants. Included in this superbly illustrated volume are newly commissioned essays by a host of esteemed media scholars, art historians, critics and curators--Nora Alter, Diedrich Diederichsen, Kobena Mercer, Catherine Queloz, Gloria Sutton and Elvan Zabunyan--who engage issues central to Green's oeuvre, such as genealogy, archives and their reworkings, movements and displacements, site specificity and location.

Renée Levi is known for her flamboyant, fast, honest, and direct painting. Trained as an architect and visual artist, she often creates monumental, installation-like works, which are always adapted to the spatial context in which they are located. In this interview, Levi talks about the origins of her artistic intention, the place she has conquered in the art world, and her visual language that gradually evolves like a quest for freedom. On Words is a collection of interviews with leading contemporary women artists. In conversation with Julie Enckell Julliard, Federica Martini, and Sarah Burkhalter, they speak about the sources from which they draw inspiration, themes in their work, and their view of the world. The series brings together a wide range of viewpoints and adds a new narrative to polyphonic art history as told by those who actively shape it. Text in English and German.

Since the late 1980s, Renée Green’s multifaceted practice has imagined and expanded the ways in which art can surface and give form to underwritten histories, collective memory, and circuits of cultural exchange. Her writing, installations, films, digital media, and sound works continue to trace and interrogate the power of cultural institutions and their relationships to language, knowledge, and constitutions of selfhood, while at the same time, indicating other ways of being and becoming. Green’s work came to prominence and circulated within the social and political flows between the world and the Americas, a concept that includes the United States, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Her practice continues to investigate the distribution and relay of art and ideas, and how these are braided with histories of migration and legacies of displacement, and the aesthetic forms and poetics that stem from these. In one of most comprehensive catalogues of her work since 2010, Inevitable Distances presents recent writing on Green’s work with some of Green’s early texts and influences. Indicating the encounters and distances travelled in a life’s journey, both this publication and the exhibition it catalogues puts her artistic production into a speculative and, at times, fictional constellation. This book is co-published by DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, Berlin; Hatje Cantz; and KW Institute for Contemporary Art.
