Francis Thompson in 1888. He was an ex-medical student with a dissecting scalpel, and a history of mental illness and trouble with the police. He had just broken up with a prostitute and had written about cutting women's stomachs open. At the same time, a few yards from his refuge, a woman was knifed, as part of a spate of prostitute murders, which one coroner said was by someone who had considerable anatomical skill and knowledge. Richard A. Patterson sets out a compelling case for English poet Francis Thompson as the prime suspect for Jack the Ripper in this must-read for Ripperologists the world over.

One of the most significant events in the history of health care is the development of separate and parallel systems for mental health and medical care. Patients, however, want health care that is better coordinated, more personalized, more accessible, more timely, and less cumbersome to receive. These patient-wants reinforce what we know about patient needs for better integrated care and more collaborative health care, as shown by the following data: 50% of mental health care is delivered by primary care physicians.67% of all psychopharmacological drugs are prescribed by primary care physicians.50-70% of all primary care visits are for psychosocial concerns. This book illustrates the importance of taking an integrated approach to health care and outlines the skills that a mental health professional needs for working in a medical setting. The authors, trained in health psychology, psychiatry, family medicine, and marriage and family therapy, build a persuasive case for their holistic, biopsychosocial approach to the traditionally fragmented fields of primary care and mental health care. This is a primer for mental health professionals working in a medical setting. Part I discusses health care settings. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the specific cultures of primary care, specialty care, and mental health care, and Chapter 3 discusses ways to balance the clinical, operational, and financial perspectives of health care. Part II provides information on how to build collaborative medical care, including getting started (Chapter 4), expanding the therapist's identity and role in medical clinics (Chapter 5), working within the medical system's organizational framework (Chapter 6), working with the common problems that patients present in primary care (Chapter 7), and ways to promote healthy behavior change (Chapter 8). The book concludes by highlighting some of the opportunities that exist for therapists who want to be part of this important shift in how health care is provided.
The analysis ofwhat might be called "dynamic nonlinearity" in time series has its roots in the pioneering work ofBrillinger (1965) - who first pointed out how the bispectrum and higher order polyspectra could, in principle, be used to test for nonlinear serial dependence - and in Subba Rao and Gabr (1980) and Hinich (1982) who each showed how Brillinger's insight could be translated into a statistical test. Hinich's test, because ittakes advantage ofthe large sample statisticalpropertiesofthe bispectral estimates became the first usable statistical test for nonlinear serial dependence. We are forever grateful to Mel Hinich for getting us involved at that time in this fascinating and fruitful endeavor. With help from Mel (sometimes as amentor, sometimes as acollaborator) we developed and applied this bispectral test in the ensuing period. The first application ofthe test was to daily stock returns {Hinich and Patterson (1982, 1985)} yielding the important discovery of substantial nonlinear serial dependence in returns, over and above the weak linear serial dependence that had been previously observed. The original manuscript met with resistance from finance journals, no doubt because finance academics were reluctant to recognize the importance of distinguishing between serial correlation and nonlinear serial dependence. In Ashley, Patterson and Hinich (1986) we examined the power and sizeofthe test in finite samples.

Focusing on the growing power of transnational media corporations in an increasingly globalized environment for distribution of television content, and on the effects of mergers and acquisitions involving local and independent television production companies, this book examines how current and recent re-structurings in ownership across the television industry reflect changing business models, how they affect creativity and diversity of television output, and to what extent they call for new approaches to regulation and policy. Based on a major study of the UK production sector as a case study, it offers a unique analysis of wider transformations in ownership affecting the television production industry worldwide and of their economic, socio-cultural and policy implications.
