Funded by the tobacco and fossil fuel industries, the Mises- and Hayek-inspired ‘free’ market has adopted ‘The Slogan of Liberty’ - but should their faith-based assertions be accorded the same epistemological status as a science? If Austrian economics is a branch of divinely revealed ‘knowledge’ - as the epigone Godfather, Hans Sennholz, insists - what validity do its policy recommendations have? Should those who falsely claim to have PhDs be tax-funded as ‘Post-Doctoral Fellows’ and ‘Professors’? This volume examines the consequences of the ‘free’ market colonisation of economics – climate change, financial crises and the corruption of academic discourse

F.A. von Hayek (1899-1992) was a Nobel Prize winning economist, famous for promoting an Austrian version of classical liberalism. The multi-volume Hayek: A Collaborative Biography examines the evolution of his life and influence. Two concepts of civilization revolve around power – should it be separated or concentrated? Liberalism in the non-Austrian classical tradition remains fearful of power concentrated in the hands of government, labour unions or corporations; Red Terrorists sought to monopolize power to liquidate enemies and competitors as a prelude to utopia (the ‘withering away of the State’); and behind the ‘slogan of liberty,’ White Terror promoters (Mises and Hayek) sought to concentrate power in the hands of a ‘dictatorial democracy’ where henchmen would liquidate enemies, and – ‘guided’ by ‘utopia’ (the ‘spontaneous’ order) – follow orders from their social superiors. This volume, Part XII, examines the ‘free’ market Use of Knowledge in Society; examines the foundations of ‘free’ market educational credentials; and asks whether those funded by the tobacco industry and the carbon lobby should be accorded ‘independent policy expert’ status.

This book is the seventh volume in this series which explores the life of Nobel Price-winning economist F.A. Hayek (1899-1992). The volume uses archival material, juxtaposed with Hayek’s published work to challenge the existing perceptions of his life and thought. It examines the methods by which Hayek interacted with – and schemed against – the knowledge communities that he encountered during his very long life. Chapters explore the ‘rules of engagement’ that Hayek employed when interacting with fifth leading knowledge communities, including the Nobel Prize selection committee who were led to believe his claim about having predicted the Great Depression. It also explores his interactions with William Beveridge, the founder of the modern British Welfare State, A. C. Pigou, the founder of the market school, J. M. Keynes, Sir Arthur Lewis, and Abba Lerner.

This tenth part of Robert Leeson's collaborative biography of Friedrich August von Hayek explores Hayek’s thought on the free market and democracy. Using an unparalleled array of archival materials, Leeson reconstructs Hayek’s thinking as the notorious economist and his acolytes set about reshaping the post-war economic order. Darker areas of Hayek’s thought are also explored, including the influence of eugenics on his thought and his support for radical right-wing dictatorships in South America. Leeson concludes this volume with a collection of chapters written by eminent scholars of Hayek. These chapters cover subjects as diverse as Hayek’s influence on scholars of Darwinian evolution, his views on psychology, and cultural evolution.

This book is the eighth volume in this Collaborative Biography, which explores the life and works of Nobel Prize-winning economist F.A. Hayek (1899-1992). Making extensive use of archival material and Hayek’s own published writings, it presents a strong challenge to perceptions of the economist’s life and thought. In this volume, chapters canvas subjects such as the relationship between the Austrian School of Economics and the Cold War, the Hapsburg Empire, and the overthrow (or planned overthrow) of democracy in a variety of countries, with a view to examining the process by which economics is constructed and disseminated.

Revision with unchanged content. What are the benefits of fostering one of the most significant pedagogical shifts in recent decades -- from practices and heuristics based in instructivist and behaviorist theory to constructivist concepts and approaches, particularly as they take form in the activities comprising problem-based learning? How have multimedia technologies affected this shift? What are the advantages of transforming, through multimedia technologies, how information is imparted, how individuals discover information, and how a classroom can become an active, engaging learning environment? This study discusses three related concepts: the benefits of problem-based collaborative learning; the value of using multimedia tools in learning systems; and the efficacy of participatory design as a software engineering methodology to create multimedia tools to be used in learning systems. This book may be of interest to educators who use technology to implement and enhance their curricula, as well as education technology theorists and researchers.

Profiles in Collaboration

Profiles in Collaboration

Robert F. Goeckel

Profiles in Collaboration exposes the collaboration of five leading officials in the East German CDU with the Stasi, the secret police of the Communist regime in the GDR. One of the bloc parties licensed by the Soviets after WWII, the CDU-East was soon subordinated by the Communist Party (SED) and tasked with mollifying opposition and mobilizing support for the Marxist-Leninist regime among Christians and churches. Yet given its interactions with the churches and contacts with political figures in West Germany, the CDU represented a potential risk for the regime. Thus the CDU-East introduced an additional layer to the bureaucratic system not found in other Soviet bloc systems and an element of complexity to East German religious policy. Robert F. Goeckel analyzes this complexity by exploring the cases of five leading CDU officials, four of whom agreed to collaborate with the Stasi and one who did not. He investigates what motivated them to collaborate (or not), how the Stasi recruited them, and how the Stasi "managed" their careers. In doing so, the extent to which these CDU officials sought to influence the churches and the state policy towards religion becomes more clear, along with how their consciences, political beliefs, and personal crises affected their commitment to act as informants. Ultimately, Profiles in Collaboration illuminates how the bureaucratic interests of the CDU were directly affected not only by the Stasi and other regime actors, but also policy shifts by the churches and West Germany.

Vibrant Collaboration: How more honesty and intimacy in teams leads to better collaboration.
During collaboration within teams and organizations, sometimes dynamics appear between the co-workers that lead to various conditions that have to do with how they relate with each other. Conditions which include stagnation, tensions, stability or flow. Particularly, the dynamics between feminine and masculine forces seem to amplify these dynamics. With feminine and masculine I don't mean women and men, but the essential principles which can be active in different flavors in all genders. Many of these dynamics are generated by feelings and emotions, and even sexual attraction or its opposite, which are often unnoticed by the people involved and can have unconscious consequences. In this book the author wants to explore how such emotions, as well as our life force and more honest and intimate relations on the workplace, are influencing our collaboration in teams and organizations. When Eros is alive in us, creativity is following close behind. Many men and women in the past have experienced the power of Eros flowing while they painted marvelous paintings, wrote glorious poetry, or inventing advanced technologies. Great artists and inventors have often been inspired by their spouses, assistants, or other muses. An erotic stimulation can empower one to think faster or need less sleep, and it can provoke a longing to penetrate the arising questions in life even deeper. The author imagined inspired minds and hearts coming together in a team where the erotic energy can flow freely (without exploiting it), to empower individual creativity, supporting the co-creation of innovative developments. Applied honesty, authenticity and a more consciously lived intimacy can support the transmutation of Eros. And, in turn, this can lead to better conditions in the workplace, more inspiration, productivity, etc.

Layout Minimization of CMOS Cells

Layout Minimization of CMOS Cells

Robert L. Maziasz; John P. Hayes

Springer
1991
sidottu
The layout of an integrated circuit (lC) is the process of assigning geometric shape, size and position to the components (transistors and connections) used in its fabrication. Since the number of components in modem ICs is enormous, computer aided-design (CAD) programs are required to automate the difficult layout process. Prior CAD methods are inexact or limited in scope, and produce layouts whose area, and consequently manufacturing costs, are larger than necessary. This book addresses the problem of minimizing exactly the layout area of an important class of basic IC structures called CMOS cells. First, we precisely define the possible goals in area minimization for such cells, namely width and height minimization, with allowance for area-reducing reordering of transistors. We reformulate the layout problem in terms of a graph model and develop new graph-theoretic concepts that completely characterize the fundamental area minimization problems for series-parallel and nonseries-parallel circuits. These concepts lead to practical algorithms that solve all the basic layout minimization problems exactly, both for a single cell and for a one-dimensional array of such cells. Although a few of these layout problems have been solved or partially solved previously, we present here the first complete solutions to all the problems of interest.
