For over sixty years, the Pym’s Lane factory in Crewe produced the benchmark of British motoring elegance in its Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. It was the home of the company’s car production from World War II until 2002, when its takeover by the Volkswagen Group meant an end to Rolls-Royce production and an expansion of Bentley. In this updated edition of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, motoring expert Malcolm Bobbitt focuses on the evolution of the characteristic models – the Bentley Mk VI and the R-Types, and the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow and Silver Spirit, together with the Silver Seraph and Bentley Arnage – while remembering the notable figures who played a vital role in the creation of these famous vehicles. Bobbitt illustrates the aftermath of the war on the company’s car production and its move from Derby to Crewe, recounting its success in the 1950s and 1960s, the near bankruptcy of the company in the 1970s, its subsequent recovery and final takeover that removed Rolls-Royce from its production line.Within these pages, Bobbitt has cultivated a varied collection of photographs to create a visual account of the history of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars and to appreciate the company’s organisation and its meticulous methods of design, testing and construction that led it to produce these legendary vehicles.

Rolls-Royce: The Classic Elegance was first published in 1987. Written by Lawrence Dalton, a life long motor enthusiast, Rolls-Royce: The Classic Elegance has been out of print for some years. Now in this second edition, authority Bernard L. King has radically revised, with thousands of changes and additions, all the captions and the production details of the Silver Wraith, Phantom IV and Phantom V, plus the coachbuilt Silver Dawns, Silver Cloud I, II and III chassis, utilising his database that encompasses all Bentley and Rolls-Royce motor cars produced up until 1965. For the first time, the data is presented in a standardised format and will prove invaluable to the enthusiast who wants to identify the body on a particular chassis along with its date of completion, first owner etc. Other book references for each coachbuilt car are added for the first time and this will be immensely useful for tracing further photographs and information. Over five hundred illustrations, mostly black and white photographs plus a 16 page colour section, cover practically every different body design mounted on post-war Rolls-Royce up to 1986 and include photographs of interiors and some coachbuilders drawings.

Responding to many requests to reprint The Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental by Raymond Gentile, an out of print Dalton Watson book published in 1980, we are excited to introduce this new, much expanded publication. Written with Raymond Gentile's blessing and assistance, the author, Andre Blaize, has used his extensive database which he has been compiling and updating for over forty years to provide an exhaustive study of these desirable cars.Introduced in 1930, the Phantom II Continental is one of the aristocrats of automobiles, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Mercedes SSKs, Bugatti T50s and Duesenberg Model Js. The history of every Phantom II Continental is described in these pages, supported by over 2,000 illustrations. The cars are shown at different periods of their lives: when new in the 1930s, in early post-war days, sometimes in derelict state and, fortunately more often, in glorious restored condition.

This book is a celebration, in its 70th Anniversary year, of the first Rolls-Royce motor car to emerge after World War II, the Silver Wraith. Excluding experimental cars, the total production of that model, spanning just over a decade, amounted to 1,883 cars, no two of which were exactly alike. These are precious reminders of a past in which bespoke, hand-built motor cars of their type were once made. All Silver Wraiths followed the pre-war practice of having custom bodies from such coachbuilders as H.J. Mulliner, Hooper and James Young. Comprehensive histories of these and other coachbuilders are included and every Silver Wraith built is listed in detail in a comprehensive table.

Having constructed a factory at Pym's Lane in Crewe in 1938 in which to build its aero engines, Rolls-Royce immediately became synonymous with the Cheshire town. It was there that Merlin and Griffon engines, destined for aeroplanes as famous as the Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster were assembled in their thousands. After WW2, Crewe became the home of Rolls-Royce Motors, which included Bentley as the production of these fine vehicles had been transferred from Derby. Superb quality and attention to detail are the hallmarks of these globally celebrated cars. This book not only details the five generations of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys built at Crewe, including the Silver Cloud and Silver Shadow, but also chronicles the company history, and the affair which led to the two marques being separated in 2003 when Rolls-Royce was acquired by BMW and moved to Goodwood, and Bentley, remaining at Crewe, was sold to Volkswagen.

Josiah Royce was undoubtedly one of the most interesting thinkers of classical American philosophy in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. His works cover a wide range of subjects from psychology and issues of social philosophy to metaphysics. Surrounded by philosophers such as William James or Charles Sanders Peirce, Royce developed a concept of pragmatism which he himself called "absolute pragmatism" and which was centred around a theory of community. The essays in this edited volume deal with this pragmatistic approach in his work and discuss it from various points of view. Among other things, they explore Royce's relationship to German idealism, the foundation of his ethics as well as his philosophical doctrine of God and his philosophy of religion. This results in rather divergent assessments of his philosophy, each of which is evidence of the enduring relevance of his thinking for the world of today.
