Parish Leadership: Principles and Perspectives

Parish Leadership: Principles and Perspectives

William J. Byron S. J.

Clear Faith Publishing
2017
nidottu
Fr. William Byron, SJ releases his latest book which provides a strong argument that lay participation in parish leadership will help the Catholic Church in the USA face up to the problem of the empty pews. It also explains how an integration of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching into the way parishes work is the key to parish renewal.
Tudor Parish Documents of the Diocese of York

Tudor Parish Documents of the Diocese of York

J. S. Purvis

Cambridge University Press
2008
pokkari
Mr Purvis introduces a classified selection of documents concerned with parochial life in Yorkshire in the days of Queen Elizabeth. The sources from which he selects are almost entirely unexplored and unpublished, namely a fine collection of the earlier Act Books of the Ecclesiastical Commission of York (which Mr Purvis himself discovered), Visitation Books, the Proceedings of the Archbishops' courts, and papers of the Consistory Court. Documents of this kind necessarily record the delinquent parishes (with which they were particularly concerned), and unless this is remembered would give an unduly dark picture. The texts of the documents are given, classified by subject, introduced by Mr Purvis, and glossed and annotated as needed. There is a foreword by the Archbishop of York.

Manual of Tropical Dermatology

Manual of Tropical Dermatology

We live today in a world densely populated by human beings living in close commu nication with one another all over the surface of the planet. Viewed from a certain distance it has the look of a single society, a community, the swarming of an intensely social species trying to figure out ways to become successfully independent. We obvi ously need, at this stage, to begin the construction of some sort of world civilization. The final worst-case for all of us has now become the destruction, by ourselves, of our species. I Although this warning is often repeated, we must not forget its paramount importance and the commitment that each sector of society has to make a world civilization possible. Tropical dermatology is a good example of an important area of our spe cialty that has never caught the proper attention of the leading centers of research in the developed countries, even though it comprehends major infec tious, parasitic, and nutritional problems of one-half of the world's land area and three-quarters of the world's population. The relevance of tropical dermatology in this extensive and overpopulated area of the globe has public health connotations that emphasize its importance. The sheer size of the problem makes it an urgent and outright need to recruit and train adequate personnel to do a proper job, and that includes not only dermatologists but paramedical personnel, nurses, and laboratory technicians.

The physician and author John Ayrton Paris (1785–1856), several of whose other medical and popular works have been reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection, and his co-author J. S. M. Fonblanque (1787–1865) published this three-volume work in 1823. It remained almost the only work on the topic of medical jurisprudence for many years. The authors define the term as 'a science by which medicine, and its collateral branches, are made subservient to the construction, elucidation, and administration of the laws; and to the preservation of public health'. Volume 1 considers the context: the professional colleges and their powers and privileges, and historical cases involving a medical practitioner. It also deals with areas of the law where medical evidence may be needed: matrimonial and childbirth issues; insanity; public nuisance (e.g. pollution); and the adulteration of food. The volume ends with the first part of a consideration of unnatural death.

Volume 2 continues the discussion of homicide in all its various aspects (including suspicious deaths which might in fact be accidental): suffocation, drowning, hanging, and battery. Proceedings at coroners' inquests are described, and there is a very extensive section on the various types of poison.

This is followed by a 'synopsis of the objects of inquiry in cases of sudden death', and an appendix presenting many illustrative historical cases. The book ends with a comprehensive index to all three volumes.

Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) was the eldest of the four artists popularly known as "The Scottish Colourists." Born in Edinburgh, he was drawn to France and returned to paint there frequently, moving in 1910 to Paris, where he moved in artistic avant-garde circles. His painting style gave way to a more contemporary and expressive approach, and he used rich colors applied with more structured brushstrokes. In 1912 Peploe returned to Edinburgh and slowly began to build a successful career as an exhibiting artist. From around 1914 until his death, he sought to paint the perfect still life. A modest selection of props, including roses or tulips, fans, books, fruits, and Chinese vases, were carefully placed in infinite varieties on patterned drapery. In 1929 he explained: "There is so much in mere objects, flowers, leaves, jugs, what not—colors, forms, relation—I can never see mystery coming to an end." This beautifully illustrated book accompanies a major exhibition devoted to the artist in his home town of Edinburgh, and throws fascinating new light on Peploe's life, on the influence of France on his work, and on his posthumous reputation.Published in association with The National Galleries of ScotlandExhibition Schedule:Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh(11/03/12-06/23/13)

S. J. Perelman
First published in 1992, this book focuses on the oeuvre of S. J. Perelman. Taken together, the essays included serve as an introduction to this important humorist’s work, both in terms of the specific short prose pieces, plays, and films examined and as an overview of his lengthy professional career. They provide insightful and in-depth literary analyses as well. The work encourages a better appreciation for Perelman’s contributions to American literary history.
