Multivariate Modelling of Non-Stationary Economic Time Series

Multivariate Modelling of Non-Stationary Economic Time Series

John Hunter; Simon P. Burke; Alessandra Canepa

Palgrave Macmillan
2017
sidottu
This book examines conventional time series in the context of stationary data prior to a discussion of cointegration, with a focus on multivariate models. The authors provide a detailed and extensive study of impulse responses and forecasting in the stationary and non-stationary context, considering small sample correction, volatility and the impact of different orders of integration. Models with expectations are considered along with alternate methods such as Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), the Kalman Filter and Structural Time Series, all in relation to cointegration. Using single equations methods to develop topics, and as examples of the notion of cointegration, Burke, Hunter, and Canepa provide direction and guidance to the now vast literature facing students and graduate economists.

Atom probe microscopy enables the characterization of materials structure and chemistry in three dimensions with near-atomic resolution. This uniquely powerful technique has been subject to major instrumental advances over the last decade with the development of wide-field-of-view detectors and pulsed-laser-assisted evaporation that have significantly enhanced the instrument’s capabilities. The field is flourishing, and atom probe microscopy is being embraced as a mainstream characterization technique. This book covers all facets of atom probe microscopy—including field ion microscopy, field desorption microscopy and a strong emphasis on atom probe tomography.Atom Probe Microscopy is aimed at researchers of all experience levels. It will provide the beginner with the theoretical background and practical information necessary to investigate how materials work using atom probe microscopy techniques. This includes detailed explanations of the fundamentals and the instrumentation, contemporary specimen preparation techniques, experimental details, and an overview of the results that can be obtained. The book emphasizes processes for assessing data quality, and the proper implementation of advanced data mining algorithms. Those more experienced in the technique will benefit from the book as a single comprehensive source of indispensable reference information, tables and techniques. Both beginner and expert will value the way that Atom Probe Microscopy is set out in the context of materials science and engineering, and includes references to key recent research outcomes.

Statistical Methods in Software Engineering

Statistical Methods in Software Engineering

This preface pertains to three issues that we would like to bring to the attention of the readers: our objectives, our intended audience, and the nature of the material. We have in mind several objectives. The first is to establish a framework for dealing with uncertainties in software engineering, and for using quantitative measures for decision making in this context. The second is to bring into perspective the large body of work having statistical content that is relevant to software engineering, which may not have appeared in the traditional outlets devoted to it. Connected with this second objective is a desire to streamline and organize our own thinking and work in this area. Our third objective is to provide a platform that facilitates an interface between computer scientists and statisticians to address a class of problems in computer science. It appears that such an interface is necessary to provide the needed synergism for solving some difficult problems that the subject poses. Our final objective is to serve as an agent for stimulating more cross-disciplinary research in computer science and statistics. To what extent the material here will meet our objectives can only be assessed with the passage of time. Our intended audience is computer scientists, software engineers, and reliability analysts, who have some exposure to probability and statistics. Applied statisticians interested in reliability problems are also a segment of our intended audience.
Buddhism, Virtue and Environment

Buddhism, Virtue and Environment

David E. Cooper; Simon P. James

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2005
nidottu
Buddhism, one increasingly hears, is an 'eco-friendly' religion. It is often said that this is because it promotes an 'ecological' view of things, one stressing the essential unity of human beings and the natural world. Buddhism, Virtue and Environment presents a different view. While agreeing that Buddhism is, in many important respects, in tune with environmental concerns, Cooper and James argue that what makes it 'green' is its view of human life. The true connection between the religion and environmental thought is to be found in Buddhist accounts of the virtues - those traits, such as compassion, equanimity and humility, that characterise the life of a spiritually enlightened individual. Central chapters of this book examine these virtues and their implications for environmental attitudes and practice. Buddhism, Virtue and Environment will be of interest not only to students and teachers of Buddhism and environmental ethics, but to those more generally engaged with moral philosophy. Written in a clear and accessible style, this book presents an original conception of Buddhist environmental thought. The authors also contribute to the wider debate on the place of ethics in Buddhist teachings and practices, and to debates within 'virtue ethics' on the relations between human well-being and environmental concern.

sidottu
A comprehensive guide on Atomic-Scale Analytical Tomography (ASAT) that discusses basic concepts and implications of the technique in areas such as material sciences, microscopy, engineering sciences and several interdisciplinary avenues. The title interrogates how to successfully achieve ASAT at the intersection of transmission electron microscopy and atom probe microscopy. This novel concept is capable of identifying individual atoms in large volumes as well as in 3D, with high spatial resolution. Written by leading experts from academia and industry, this book serves as a guide with real-world applications on cutting-edge research problems. An essential reading for researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in nanoscale characterisation, this book introduces the reader to a new direction for atomic-scale microscopy.

The Cretaceous World

The Cretaceous World

Peter W. Skelton; Robert A. Spicer; Simon P. Kelley; Iain Gilmour

Cambridge University Press
2003
sidottu
The rich geological record of the Cretaceous Period reveals a world that experienced extreme climatic warmth and significantly higher global sea levels than today. It therefore provides a natural case study of the Earth in 'greenhouse' climatic mode, which this interdisciplinary textbook analyses from the perspective of Earth System Science. After surveying the evidence for conditions on the Cretaceous Earth, this book explores the interactions between the physical, chemical and biological processes, within the Earth and at its surface. These processes control the prevailing environmental conditions on Earth and the book highlights the major differences between the Cretaceous and the present world. Finally, the mass extinction that terminated the period, and its possible causes, are investigated. Designed for undergraduate and graduate courses, this textbook features chapter summaries, focus boxes, and questions and answers throughout the text. The book is supported by a website hosting sample pages, selected illustrations, and worked exercises.
