The Splendor Solis

The Splendor Solis

sidottu
A magnificent edition of Splendor Solis for all those interested in alchemy, magic and mysterious manuscripts. Popularly attributed to the legendary figure Salomon Trismosin, Splendor Solis (‘Splendour of the Sun’) is the most beautiful alchemical manuscript ever made, with 22 fabulous illustrations rich in allegorical and mystical symbolism. The paintings are given a fitting showcase in this new Watkins edition, which accompanies them with Joscelyn Godwin’s excellent contemporary translation of the original 16th-century German text, as well as interpretation from alchemical experts Stephen Skinner and Georgiana Hedesan, and from Rafal T. Prinke, an authority in central and Eastern European esoteric manuscripts. Stephen Skinner explains the symbolism of both the text and the illustrations, suggesting that together they describe the physical process of the alchemical transmutation of base metal into gold. Rafal T. Prinke explains the theories about the authorship of both text and illustrations, discussing Splendor Solis as the turning point in alchemical iconography passing from the medieval tradition to that of the Baroque and the reasons for the misattribution of Splendor Solis to Poysel and Trismosin. Georgiana Hedesan looks at the legendary figure of Salomon Trismosin and his creation by followers of Theophrastus Paracelsus as part of an attempt to integrate their master in a lineage of ancient alchemical philosophers. The images are taken from the British Library manuscript Harley 3469, the finest example of the Splendor Solis to survive.

Solis Press are proud to reprint this collection of seven short horror tales from Vincent O'Sullivan, the master of the decadent and macabre.Vincent O'Sullivan (1868-1940) was born into a prosperous Irish American family in New York and moved to London as a child. However, Vincent spent much of his life in the demi-monde world that is the setting of the stories in this collection. While in Paris, O'Sullivan was friends with Oscar Wilde, Leonard Smithers, Aubrey Beardsley and other members of the Aesthetic movement. The writer Robert Aickman wrote of O'Sullivan that: "Having lived a longish life as a more or less well-to-do rentier, in latish middle age found himself ruined, wrote his last book under terrible conditions, and, dying in Paris, ended anonymously in the common pit for the cadavers of paupers."This edition includes the frontispiece from the first edition by Aubrey Beardsley. Each of the seven stories is illustrated with photographs commissioned for this new printing.

Eyes on Moryork - 2014 Nathan Solis Photographs
Since 1986, MorYork has been the studio and gallery of Clare Graham and Bob Breen. It continues to evolve. "Eyes on MorYork" is an attempt to have multiple photographers record what the space looks like in 2014, prior to a show at the Craft and Folk Art Museum. The show will be comprised of pieces that normally cohabitate the dense environment of MorYork. Constantly evolving and continually morphing, MorYork is ephemeral, the building continues to live its destiny. These portraits seek to capture moments in its life. These photos were taken by Nathan Solis during 2014, and is Volume 10 in a series of 12 different photographers.
The Wreck of the "Golden Mary" (Solis Classics)
Please note: this Solis Classics edition of the book is the complete version of the story. The buyers' reviews below are not necessarily for this particular version. Please cross-check the reviews' dates with the publication date of this edition. The Wreck of the "Golden Mary" was first published in the Christmas issue of Household Words in 1856. Household Words was a London-based weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens. The magazine contained serialized stories by many now-famous writers. In the magazine, Dickens would often collaborate with other writers, particularly on special issues, and this story is one of those collaborations. Here, different sections of the book are written from the perspective of some of the characters who feature in the story. The idea being that each section of the story was written by a different writer. The writers were Wilkie Collins, Percy Hetherington Fitzgerald, Harriet Parr, Adelaide Anne Procter, James White and, of course, Charles Dickens himself. The story follows the journey of the sailing ship, Golden Mary, her crew and passengers as they attempt to travel from Liverpool to California. This book is the complete version of the story and has been reset in fresh type.
