This book is on inertial confinement fusion, an alternative way to produce electrical power from hydrogen fuel by using powerful lasers or particle beams. Two huge laser facilities are presently under construction to show that this method works. It involves the compression of tiny amounts (micrograms) of fuel to thousand times solid density and pressures otherwise existing only in the centre of stars. Thanks to advances in laser technology, it is now possible to produce such extreme states of matter in the laboratory. Recent developments have boosted laser intensities again with new possibilities for laser particle accelerators, laser nuclear physics, and fast ignition of fusion targets. This is a reference book for those working on beam plasma physics, be it in the context of fundamental research or applications to fusion energy or novel ultra-bright laser sources. The book combines quite different areas of physics: beam target interaction, dense plasmas, hydrodynamic implosion and instabilities, radiative energy transfer as well as fusion reactions. Particular attention is given to simple and useful modelling, including dimensional analysis and similarity solutions. Both authors have worked in this field for more than 20 years. They want to address in particular those teaching this topic to students and all those interested in understanding the technical basis.

Proper Names explores the aims and scope of the Millian approach to the semantics of proper names. Stefano Predelli covers the core semantic aspects of Millianism, and develops them against the background of an independently motivated pre-semantic picture, grounded on the distinction between meaning and use. Fictional Discourse: A Radical Fictionalist Semantics combines the insight of linguistic and philosophical semantics with the study of fictional language. Its central idea is familiar to anyone exposed to the ways of narrative fiction, namely the notion of a fictional teller. Starting with premises having to do with fictional names such as 'Holmes' or 'Emma', Stefano Predelli develops Radical Fictionalism, a theory that is subsequently applied to central themes in the analysis of fiction. Among other things, he discusses the distinction between storyworlds and narrative peripheries, the relationships between homodiegetic and heterodiegetic narrative, narrative time, unreliability, and closure. The final chapters extend Radical Fictionalism to critical discourse, as Predelli introduces the ideas of critical and biased retelling, and pauses on the relationships between Radical Fictionalism and talk about literary characters.

The fin de siècle witnessed an extensive and heated debate about cosmopolitanism, which transformed readers' attitudes towards national identity, foreign literatures, translation, and the idea of world literature. Focussing on literature written in English, Literary Cosmopolitanism in the English Fin de Siècle offers a critical examination of cosmopolitanism as a distinctive feature of the literary modernity of this important period of transition. No longer conceived purely as an abstract philosophical ideal, cosmopolitanism--or world citizenship--informed the actual, living practices of authors and readers who sought new ways of relating local and global identities in an increasingly interconnected world. The book presents literary cosmopolitanism as a field of debate and controversy. While some writers and readers embraced the creative, imaginative, emotional, and political potentials of world citizenship, hostile critics denounced it as a politically and morally suspect ideal, and stressed instead the responsibilities of literature towards the nation. In this age of empire and rising nationalism, world citizenship came to enshrine a paradox: it simultaneously connoted positions of privilege and marginality, connectivity and non-belonging. Chapters on Oscar Wilde, Lafcadio Hearn, George Egerton, the periodical press, and artificial languages bring to light the variety of literary responses to the idea of world citizenship that proliferated at the turn of the twentieth century. The book interrogates cosmopolitanism as a liberal ideology that celebrates human diversity and as a social identity linked to worldliness; it investigates its effect on gender, ethics, and the emotions. It presents the literature of the fin de siècle as a dynamic space of exchange and mediation, and argues that our own approach to literary studies should become less national in focus.

This book focuses on the historical configuration of the territorial borders and functional boundaries of the European nation state. It presents integration as a process of boundary transcendence, redefinition, shift, and change that fundamentally alters the nature of the European states. Its core concern lies in the relationship between the specific institutional design of the new Brussels centre, the boundary redefinitions that result from its political production, and, finally, the consequences of these two elements on established and developing national European political structures. Integration is examined as a new historical phase in the development of Europe, characterized by a powerful trend toward legal, economic, and cultural de-differentiation after the five-century process of differentiation that led to the European system of nation states. Considering the EU as the formation of an enlarged territorial system, this work recovers some of the classic issues of political modernization theory: Is the EU an attempt at state formation? Is it an attempt at centre formation without nation building? Is it a process of centre formation without democratization? This work also seeks to sharpen the conceptual tools currently available to deal with processes of territorial enlargement and unification. It develops a theoretical framework for political structuring beyond the nation state, capable of linking all aspects of EU integration (inter-governmentalism, definition of rights, the 'constitutionalization' of treaties, the tensions between the new territorial hierarchy and the nation states, etc.). The book adopts an 'holistic' approach to integration, in the form of a theory from which hypotheses can be generated (even if it is not possible to test all of its components). This theoretical framework has three principal aims: to overcome a rigid distinction between domestic politics and international relations; to link actors' orientations, interests, and motivations with macro outcomes; and to relate structural profiles with dynamic processes of change.

Stefano Predelli presents an original account of the relationships between the central semantic notions of meaning and truth. Part One begins with the study of phenomena that have little or nothing to do with the effects of meaning on truth. Predelli warns against what he calls 'the Fallacy of Misplaced Character', and is concerned with sentences such as 'there sometimes exist sentences containing exactly eight words', 'I am now uttering a non-contradictory sentence', or 'I exist'. In Part Two, he moves on to further cases which bear no interesting relations with questions of truth, but which, unlike those in Part One, have important repercussions on questions of meaning. The resulting 'Theory of Bias' is applied to expressive interjections (with a chapter about the logical properties of 'alas'), to instances of register and coarse slang, to honorifics and nicknames, and to derogatory slurs. Part Three draws from the previous two parts, and argues that some notorious semantic problems ought to be approached from the viewpoint of the Theory of Bias. Predelli starts with vocatives, dates, and signatures, and introduces the notion of 'obstinate indexicality', which then guides his solution to Quine's 'Giorgione' puzzle, his version of the demonstrative theory quotation, and his defence of the bare-boned approach to demonstratives and demonstrations.

Dopo immane sforzo ed estenuante ricerca si puo affermare che questa raccolta ha un filo conduttore: pensieri in liberta sulle piccole, normali, banali cose che rendono la vita "bella." Coraggiosamente, senza tralasciare gli argomenti ed i sentimenti cupi o dolorosi ne provare ad evitarne alcuno, anche scabroso. Si tratta di racconti, lazzi, poesie, aforismi e descrizioni riportati in rigoroso ordine cronologico di realizzazione. Il tutto nella chiara consapevolezza che tutto e stato gia scritto, ma che non tutto e ancora stato scritto in tutti i modi possibili. Ed e in questo ormai angusto spazio che mi sono, presuntuosamente, intrufolato ed intromesso.

Htilar Sitthu, o l'uomo dal villaggio di Shwe Sit Thee nel distretto di Meik-hti-lar, Tenente Colonnello delle Forze Armate del Myanmar, frequent l'Universit di Yangon che abbandon senza aver completato i corsi. Sin dal 1947 ha collaborato con numerosi giornali e riviste pubblicando le proprie poesie. La sua Antologia della poesia del Myanmar, "Me-guang-Myithma O Ywet-Wa-hnin Acha Kabya-mya - Oh foglia appassita del Fiume Mekong ed altre poesie" 1961, vinse il premio della Myanmar Translation Society nell'anno di pubblicazione. Htilar Sitthu poeta-soldato. Possiede un vocabolario ricchissimo ed altamente competente nel plasmare il linguaggio. La sua attitudine verso la poesia tradisce lo studio dei classici: quale poeta maggiormente da Htilar Sitthu potrebbe rappresentare l'artista sensibile e vicino alla storia del Myanmar? Questo libro racchiude tutto quello che ideologicamente sono in questo preciso istante in senso unicamente culturale (che comunque non si esime dall'essere in qualche modo politico) e, in un certo senso, cerca di farmi fare due conti in tasca per vedere se rimasto qualche spicciolo di speranza nei confronti di una condizione intellettuale nazionale drammaticamente comatosa (la risposta, sostanzialmente, s "a patto che"). Tra interviste, flussi di coscienza ideologici, tentativi di comparazione intergenerazionale, invettive dettagliate, analisi critiche e narrazioni di situazioni un tantino paradossali, ho avuto modo di scartavetrare e sviscerare moltissimi aspetti di quello che, da ragazzino, consideravo un paese impossibile da deturpare almeno culturalmente e artisticamente. Stefano Zamblera, 2018: ""A Dongba Pictographs Dictionary with Iconographic Index Plates"" Dictionary of Dongba pictographs implemented in categories sorted by iconographic index plates of BASIC pictographs. Iconographic and graphic study of such corpus of glyphs evinced two distinguished sets of pictographs which could be named BASIC and COMPLEX. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are those glyphs made by one and just one iconographic unit (signifier) that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to the physical object meant. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are assembled together making COMPLEX PICTOGRAPHS, alias COMPLEX UNITS OF SIGNIFIERS. As any BASIC PICTOGRAPH consists in a signifier written by a minimal graphic unit, identification of BASIC PICTOGRAPHS categories to gather them coincides with the study and identification of a set of ICONOGRAPHIC PRIMES into Dongba pictographs corpus. ICONOGRAPHIC PRIME is then used in the making of iconographic index plates for BASIC PICTOGRAPHS.
