The processes of freezing and melting were present at the beginnings of the Earth and continue to dominate the natural and industrial worlds. The solidification of a liquid or the melting of a solid involves a complex interplay of many physical effects. This 2001 book presents in a systematic way the field of continuum solidification theory based on instability phenomena. An understanding of the physics is developed by using examples of increasing complexity with the object of creating a deep physical insight applicable to more complex problems. Applied mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and materials scientists will all find this volume of interest.
The Third Reich in the Ivory Tower

The Third Reich in the Ivory Tower

This is the first systematic exploration of the nature and extent of sympathy for Nazi Germany at American universities during the 1930s. Universities were highly influential in shaping public opinion and many of the nation's most prominent university administrators refused to take a principled stand against the Hitler regime. Universities welcomed Nazi officials to campus and participated enthusiastically in student exchange programs with Nazified universities in Germany. American educators helped Nazi Germany improve its image in the West as it intensified its persecution of the Jews and strengthened its armed forces. The study contrasts the significant American grassroots protest against Nazism that emerged as soon as Hitler assumed power with campus quiescence and administrators' frequently harsh treatment of those students and professors who challenged their determination to maintain friendly relations with Nazi Germany.

Stalking similar ground as his first book, the Second Cache resumes tattling tales of Colorado Wildlife Officer Stephen H. Porter; time stamped stories, essays, and poems, personifying the (mis)behavior of people interacting with North Park's rich and diverse wildlife resources.Na ve as a spring colt, green as spring grass, Steve galloped into North Park an educated, well-trained, and well-equipped recruit who soon realized his cultural, social, and biological education had just begun. And what a journey it was Riding herd over droves of men and women recreating throughout the North Park outback for over two decades, Steve encountered awe-inspiring tales on every trail.Set in the high elevation remoteness of North Park, the Native American bison hunting grounds they called the Bull Pen, the reader will understand why Steve's lengthy stay extended far beyond the valley's wild splendor. The human element of family, friends, community, sense of place; working for the wildlife resource with people who cherishes it as much as he does. Both the First and Second Cache were Steve's Covid-19 therapy, giving him time to complete the most mind boggling, soul cleansing, heart wrenching accomplishment of his entire life.Written as personal memoirs to be enjoyed by family and friends, Steve's tales have roused the imaginations of those who hunt and/or fish, those who do not, and others interested in the duties of a Rocky Mountain game warden. Conscience Over Mind by Faith to Rule Over the Senses: Conscience Over Mind by Faith to Rule Over the Senses
Stephen H. Sergeant's new book is an extensive and scripturally supported mixture of biblical commentary and guide to spiritual growth. It places a special emphasis on New Testament concepts and focuses heavily on the character of God and the personhood of Jesus Christ-and what Jesus's teachings mean for humanity. But at its heart, this book is designed to inspire all those who seek an in-depth understanding of the Christian life and how to live it in the fullness of joy.Part I, "Love, Faith, and Hope," focuses heavily on faith-specifically on trusting, obeying, and surrendering to God by faith. Part II, "Separation of Light and Darkness," speaks to heavier themes of spiritual adultery and the end times. Part III, "Jesus Is the Lord of the Sabbath," discusses the seventh-day Sabbath and the promise of the "New Earth."But one major theme runs throughout Sergeant's book: we must ask God to fill us with compassion for others, because only then will we find true fulfillment.Sergeant promises that following Christ will result in more than just spiritual rebirth-it's the key to a stress-free, healthful life of true joy and contentment.

Defoe’s Writings and Manliness

Defoe’s Writings and Manliness

Stephen H. Gregg

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2009
sidottu
Defoe's Writings and Manliness is a timely intervention in Defoe studies and in the study of masculinity in eighteenth-century literature more generally. Arguing that Defoe's writings insistently returned to the issues of manliness and its contrary, effeminacy, this book reveals how he drew upon a complex and diverse range of discourses through which masculinity was discussed in the period. It is for this reason that this book crosses over and moves between modern paradigms for the analysis of eighteenth-century masculinity to assess Defoe's men. A combination of Defoe's clarity of vision, a spirit of contrariness and a streak of moral didacticism resulted in an idiosyncratic and restless testing of the forces surrounding his period's ideas of manliness. Defoe's men are men, but they are never unproblematically so: they display a contrariness which indicates that a failure of manliness is never very far away.
Islam and the Liberal State

Islam and the Liberal State

Stephen H. Jones

National identity and liberal democracy are recurrent themes in debates about Muslim minorities in the West. Britain is no exception, with politicians responding to claims about Muslims’ lack of integration by mandating the promotion of ‘fundamental British values’ including ‘democracy’ and ‘individual liberty’.This book engages with both these themes, addressing the lack of understanding about the character of British Islam and its relationship to the liberal state. It charts a gradual but decisive shift in British institutions concerned with Islamic education, Islamic law and Muslim representation since Muslims settled in the UK in large numbers in the 1950s. Based on empirical research including interviews undertaken over a ten-year period with Muslims, and analysis of public events organized by Islamic institutions, Stephen Jones challenges claims about the isolation of British Islamic organizations and shows that they have decisively shaped themselves around British public and institutional norms. He argues that this amounts to the building of a distinctive ‘British Islam’. Using this narrative, the book makes the case for a variety of liberalism that is open to the expression of religious arguments in public and to associations between religious groups and the state. It also offers a powerful challenge to claims about the insularity of British Islamic institutions by showing how the national orientation of Islam called for by British policymakers is, in fact, already happening.

Drawing on a variety of published and unpublished material representing Toland's broad interests, Professor Daniel reveals a common theme emphasizing man's capacity for independent thought on basic philosophical, religious, and political issues. Roughly chronological, Daniel's treatment describes Toland's progressive refinement of this fundamental aspect of his thought. After examining, in his early works, the process whereby religion becomes mystified, Toland turned to biography, demonstrating that through it one can regain rational control over religion. Prejudices and superstitions, topics of the Letters to Serena, are shown to be overcome through corrections implicit in the principles of biographical and historical exegesis. Polemic as philosophic methode required Toland to provide a doctrine of esoteric communication. In the course of his later writings this doctrine became grounded in a metaphysics suitable for the Cieronian religion of the pantheists.
