Tea Time With Terrorists

Tea Time With Terrorists

Mark Stephen Meadows

Soft Skull Press

Armed with a map, a motorcycle, an infectious sense of humor, and a dim understanding of Sri Lanka's war, author, artist, and adventurer Mark Stephen Meadows arrives in the country intending to have, as it were, afternoon tea with terrorists. Figuring that the first step to solving a problem is understanding it, he journeys north into the war zone, interviewing terrorists, generals, and heroin dealers along the way. He discovers an island of beauty and abundance ground down by three decades of war. As he travels north through Colombo, Kandy, and the damaged city of Jaffna, Meadows gives his riveting take on the war. Known for child conscription and drawn-out torture methods, he explains, the Tamil Tigers also invented suicide bombing and were the first to lace together terrorists and financiers into international networks of militant uprising. In Sri Lanka, Meadows discovers a deep view into an ancient culture. Along the way, he learns to trap an elephant, weave rope from coconut husks, and cast out devils, and he actually has tea with a few terrorists. This is the inspiring story of his journey and an enlightening meditation on the interconnectedness of globalization, the media, and modern terrorism.

Ocean Beach, San Diego, better known as OB, is located on Point Loma. Nothing stops the summer influx of tourists, fugitives, and gypsies from coming nearly as far southwest in the continental US as one can go. On any given day, you will see the unofficial mayor of OB holding court on the seawall by the pier. Paul "Pops" O'Hagen tells the tale of his life before and after prison as he encourages the younger surfers to not do what he did. Pops's troubles are not in the past, though. The person who used to be his best friend but betrayed him by lying in court still poses a threat.

Welcome This book, A Broken Spirit, a Contrite Heart, is book #8 in my Hiking the Trail of Truth series. I have received several requests regarding the subject matter, which material covers an in depth look for all of those who are willing and want to learn and to understand what God requires of them. And what does God require of you? Moses once answered, "To fear the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the Lord's commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you this day for your good" (Deuteronomy 10:12,13). Micah completes this thought by saying that one is required to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). These are indeed spiritual sacrifices, not physical ones as were required under the old law. Jesus of course made the ultimate sacrifice, yet we as individuals are required to make important sacrifices as well, which is why this book was written. Our most essential sacrifice? The psalmist makes it clear: "O, Lord open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For you do not desire sacrifice (physical) or I would give it. You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart-These, O God, You will not despise (Psalm 51:15-17). Let us hike this section of the trail of truth together, dear reader, and let us endeavor to understand the depth and importance of this particular sacrifice required of us...a broken spirit, a contrite heart... Sincerely, M S Taylor

San Carlos was a bedroom community located fifteen miles east of the Pacific Ocean. After WWII and the Korean War, veterans and their families lined up to buy one of the tract homes that made up the new suburbia. The baby boom had begun in San Diego.Directly west of San Carlos, Ocean Beach, a laid-back enclave consisting of seven square miles, was the bohemian jewel of the Point Loma Peninsula. The common thread that tied these two communities together in the seventies was not just beautiful weather. Two outlaw motorcycle clubs immersed in a territorial war, the rampant abuse of illegal drugs, sociopathic serial killers, and suicide stained, for those of us who lived there and then, what should have been an idyllic existence. There Goes the Neighborhood is a tale of two communities forever changed by the dark cloud that blotted the light of day from those who called either community home.

Yangchen and her family are Tibetan refugees living a simple life in Nepal. Often, her High Lama grandfather would tell her stories of the wonders of Tibet before he had to cross over to Nepal to escape the crackdown of Chinese authority. This was a special time for Yangchen as she loved her grandfather dearly and the stories he would tell her. Just prior to his passing, and with a weakened voice, he awakes from a dream re-counting that she crosses over to Tibet. Suddenly, Yangchen had purpose in her life, and because of his sacred dream, she realizes she must go. Having received a smartphone for her eighteenth birthday and inspired by her grandfather's dream and her own self-determination, she posts a curious message on a Tibetan refugee website mobilizing fellow refugees to accompany her on the treacherous journey to Tibet. By doing so, Yangchen unintentionally changes the course of Tibetan history.

A privileged view into the sumptuous interiors designed by James Aman for major collectors of modern and contemporary art. Creating settings where great art can live in harmony with the style of the interiors and provide an elegant and inviting living space for the collectors is the hallmark of James Aman’s design. His goal is to integrate contemporary, often provocative works of art into brighter, more open spaces that inspire and delight the collectors and complement the way they live. Working collaboratively with his clients, Aman applies the same artistic principles of light, color, texture, and scale that characterize the world’s best art in the selection of fabrics and furnishings that surround and enhance the collections. The look that has evolved is more open, streamlined, and tailored, but it is still respectful of classic details. Sumptuous materials and bespoke furniture and decorative objects, often the work of partner John Meeks, complement art collections that include works by Picasso, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Rothko, and Warhol as well as contemporary masters like John Currin, Damien Hirst, Cindy Sherman, and Richard Prince. The New Formal includes ten magnificent residences - landmark Park Avenue apartments and Upper East Side townhouses in New York as well as stunning properties in Greenwich, the Hamptons, and Palm Beach. Unlike many designers, Aman works exclusively with a small number of loyal clients whose trust he has gained over multiple projects. His portfolio offers an unprecedented glimpse into this rarified world.

China at the Center focuses on two masterpieces of seventeenth-century map-making that illustrate the exchange of information (and misinformation) between Europe and Asia. The world maps created by Jesuit priests Matteo Ricci (1602) and Ferdinand Verbiest (1674) for the Chinese courts tell fascinating stories about the meeting of two worldviews. They provided Europeans with greater knowledge of China and the Chinese with new ideas about geography, astronomy, and the natural sciences. The maps also show the ways that certain myths were perpetuated, especially as seen in the vivid and imaginative descriptions of the peoples and places of the world and in their depictions of exotic fauna.
The Mark of Shame

The Mark of Shame

Stigmatization of mental disorder erodes personal well-being, family relations, economic productivity, and public health. Because stigma promotes shame and silence, mental illness is seldom discussed openly, despite recent shifts in cultural practices. The Mark of Shame provides a thorough and compelling analysis of the many issues related to the stigmatisation of mental illness and to the kinds of solutions for this complex and longstanding problem that show the most promise of succeeding. In The Mark of Shame, Stephen P. Hinshaw addresses the psychological, social, historical, and evolutionary roots of the stigma of mental illness as well as the long history of such stigmatisation. After appraising empirical evidence and indicators from the general culture (e.g. language usage, media portrayals, discriminatory practices), and after considering developmental issues plus parallels with other social problems, they provide an agenda for humanising the ways in which mental illness is viewed, so that families, communities, and society at large can overcome exclusionary tendencies and individuals with mental illness can cope more effectively.

Millions of people and their families are affected by mental illness; it causes untold pain and severely impairs their ability to function in the world. In recent years, we have begun to understand and develop a range of effective treatments for mental illness. Even with this shift from moralistic views to those emphasizing the biological and genetic origins of mental illness, punitive treatment and outright rejection remain strong. Public attitudes toward mental illness are still more negative than they were half a century ago, and the majority of those afflicted either do not receive or cannot afford adequate care. As a result of all of these troubling facts, applying the term "stigma" to mental illness is particularly appropriate because stigma conveys the mark of shame borne by those in any highly devalued group. Mental illness tops the list of stigmatized conditions in current society, generating the kinds of stereotypes, fear, and rejection that are reminiscent of longstanding attitudes toward leprosy. Mental disorders threaten stability and order, and media coverage exacerbates this situation by equating mental illness with violence. As a result, stigma is rampant, spurring family silence, discriminatory laws, and social isolation. The pain of mental illness is searing enough, but adding the layer of stigma affects personal well being, economic productivity, and public health, fueling a vicious cycle of lowered expectations, deep shame, and hopelessness. In this groundbreaking book, Stephen Hinshaw examines the longstanding tendency to stigmatize those with mental illness. He also provides practical strategies for overcoming this serious problem, including enlightened social policies that encourage, rather than discourage, contact with those afflicted, media coverage emphasizing their underlying humanity, family education, and responsive treatment. The Mark of Shame is a deeply inspiring and passionate work that is realistic and filled with hope. It combines personal accounts with information from social and evolutionary psychology, sociology, and public policy to provide messages that are essential for anyone afflicted or familiar with mental illness.
