This is the first book to provide detailed analysis of the relationship between higher education and scientific research in key Third World countries. Focusing on four of the most successful of the newly industrializing countries--Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore--the authors examine the intersection between outstanding economic development in these four countries and the higher education and research establishments they have developed. The study combines careful analysis of the current status of scientific research in higher education with detailed ethnographic case studies of scientific work.Based upon a two-year research effort sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the study presents a multifaceted approach to the subject, evaluating for each country: the organization of the universities and other scientific institutions; the scientists and administrators who work in these institutions; the research productivity and the relationship of basic research to applied uses in industry and commerce; the interactions of these institutions with scholars from Western Europe, Japan, and North America. The authors demonstrate that the nations under study are rapidly building a sophisticated scientific infrastructure and clearly recognize the importance of science for development. The book concludes with an enlightening discussion of how scientists publish their findings in these countries.

Debates continue to rage over the merits or flaws of public land and whether or not it should be privatized-or at least, radically reconfigured in some way. In Defense of Public Lands offers a comprehensive refutation of the market-oriented arguments. Steven Davis passionately advocates that public land ought to remain firmly in the public’s hands. He reviews empirical data and theoretical arguments from biological, economic, and political perspectives in order to build a case for why our public lands are an invaluable and irreplaceable asset for the American people. In Defense of Public Lands briefly lays out the history and characteristics of public lands at the local, state, and federal levels while examining the numerous policy prescriptions for their privatization or, in the case of federal lands, transfer. He considers the dimensions of environmental health; markets and valuation of public land, the tensions between collective values and individual preferences, the nature and performance of bureaucratic management, and the legitimacy of interest groups and community decision-making. Offering a fair, good faith overview of the privatizers’ best arguments before refuting them, this timely book contemplates both the immediate and long-term future of our public lands.

For most Americans, state lands are the most readily accessible type of public land; however, despite their ubiquity, they remain largely terra incognita. The Other Public Lands is a primer on state public lands and the political dynamics that underlie their management. Offering a wide-angle overview, Steven Davis focuses on how states prioritize competing claims related to conservation, resource development, tourism, recreation, and finances. The Other Public Lands looks at both differences and common patterns in state land management, including the structure of natural resource agencies. Davis examines the privatization and commercialization of state parks, and the tensions between recreation, revenue and the preservation of biodiversity and natural landscapes. He also raises issues about equity, access, appropriate development, and ecological health. Chapters review state forests, state wildlife management areas, and school trust lands. In addition, the roles of interest groups, the courts, and agency culture and behavior are compared and analyzed both between states and the federal government and between states with differing approaches to specific issues. As there has been a demand to transfer at least some federal lands to the states, The Other Public Lands concludes with an appraisal of whether states could handle this transfer and goes on to suggest ways to ensure adequate access in an era of increased demand.

Their story is shared as they discuss life, music, family history, poems, letters, and even quilts on a cold December night in 1862. They are situated near Murfreesboro, Tennessee in anticipation of the Battle of Stones River. Join Thomas and John, the oldest McGonagle brothers, as they discuss with their younger brother, Joseph, their Scottish ancestry, family stories, and U.S. history. Read letters written in the 1840s by relatives from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Reminisce with the brothers about the music their sister Nancy played on the family piano on their Ohio farm. Find surprises in a letter, written at Fort Kearney, Nebraska during the time of the Oregon and Mormon trails. Discover slang used by soldiers in the 1860s. Enjoy the discussions and thoughts the brothers savor on the eve of one of the most pivotal battles of the Civil War. Amid uncertainty and discomfort, they encourage and tease each other as only brothers can do.

Dear Folks, an historical fiction, offers a wholesome peek into the year 1918, nearing the end of WWI, attractively interlaced with ninety-seven pages of classic war song lyrics, sheet music cover illustrations, original photos, and era memorabilia. Earl Young's world is both small and large. He works the family wheat farm in his small hometown of Brock, Nebraska, but he's in the middle of World War I and German-American discrimination is spreading. Unquestionably, Earl's first priority is wheat, but he must do his bit to defeat the Kaiser. His zeal lands him a chance to travel the States and across the pond to France, courtesy of the U.S. Army. Proud of his family, proud of wheat, Earl is now proud to be a soldier with the 401st Pontoon Engineers of the American Expeditionary Force. The story hinges on letters Earl faithfully writes home to his folks in language that shows innocence of youth in a time when even travel across state lines was unusual for ordinary citizens. Dialogue with his new and "second best friend," Morgan, drops us into the barracks playing checkers, takes us onboard the U.S.S. Mongolia, where a fight with Spanish influenza breaks out, and sticks us in a scuffle with mud and frogs in France. Earl never realized before that a back-woods-man from Brock, Nebraska, could ever be permitted to see so much of the world and get by with it.Earl was a hero, not because he fought in the war but because he had a heart to defend his country. Not knowing the outcome, he went willingly, and exemplified the American pioneer spirit and determination that made this country great. From Trench cake to threshing bees, Earl shows us the fight of the farmer and the soldier "Wheat and war That's all you ever talk about "Dear Folks beautifully displays as a reminder of both service and honor, character and spirit, while teaching a bit of yesterday. A feel-good, enjoyable read.
