Media Economics

Media Economics

Colin Hoskins; Stuart M. McFadyen; Adam Finn

SAGE Publications Inc
2004

"Hoskins, McFadyen and Finn de-dismalise economics. Their book is clearly written, full of cogent and apposite examples and analyses persuasively what makes media and communications like, and unlike, other economic sectors. From network externality to public good, from experience goods to superstars, from dumping to quotas they lucidly guide the reader through the tangles of the new economy and why it now matters less if maids burn books. Eat your heart out Thomas Carlyle." -Richard E. Collins, The Open University, U.K. How does the Internet affect the supply of information-based entertainment and cultural goods? Why do telephone companies have peak and off-peak prices for long-distance calls? Why is broadcasting, but not newspaper publishing, usually regulated and sometimes subsidized? Media Economics: Applying Economics to New and Traditional Media provides a thorough foundation of the microeconomic principles and concepts needed to understand media industries and issues in the converging media environment. Media Economics differs from ordinary media economic texts by taking a conceptual approach to economic issues. As the book progresses through economic principles, authors Colin Hoskins, Stuart McFadyen, and Adam Finn use cases and examples to demonstrate how these principles can be used to analyze media issues and problems. Media Economics emphasizes economic concepts that have distinct application within media industries, including corporate media strategies and mergers, public policy within media industries, how industry structure and changing technologies affect the conduct and performance of media industries, and why the United States dominates trade in information and entertainment. Key Features Chapter opening vignettes introduce the issues analyzed in each chapter Concise definitions of key terms for a clear understanding of basic microeconomic and managerial economic concepts Examples from a variety of media industries including those in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia A concept-driven approach enabling a longer shelf-life as technologies, structures, and revenues change A recognition of the reality of convergence and consolidation in media industries rather than addressing each media outlet individually Media Economics assumes no prior background in economics and is designed for undergraduate and graduate students studying media economics and media industries. The book is an ideal text for public policy and the media as well as media and society courses with an economic perspective taught in Media Studies, Communication, Business, Journalism, Film Studies, Political Studies, and Economics programs.

Opinions: Essays on Lawyering, Litigation and Arbitration, the Placebo Effect, Chutzpah, and Related Matters

Opinions-Essays on Lawyering, Litigation and Arbitration, the Placebo Effect, Chutzpah, and Related Matters is insightful, informative, fun, and funny. Opinions collects succinct law-related observations by two long-time practitioners-one a lawyer, the other an arbitrator and mediator, and both sometime law school teachers. They share the sensibility of Mark Twain's words, appearing as the book's epigraph: "To be good is noble, but to teach others how to be good is nobler-and less trouble." Opinions is for lawyers, judges, mediators, arbitrators, negotiators, witnesses, and everyone else whose fortunes put them in the path of the legal profession. Opinions is for those contemplating legal careers, those who regret not going to law school, and those who regret going. Opinions is for those fascinated with-or repelled by-the machinery of dispute resolution, its lofty goals and its mundane idiosyncrasies. Opinions is for those who believe that words matter. Opinions is for those who appreciate Ambrose Bierce's definition of litigation "A machine which you go into as a pig and come out of as a sausage." As eminent law professor and arbitrator Theodore J. St. Antoine writes in the foreword, Opinions authors Goldman and Israel have produced a Bramble Bush for the 21st century, only "much more accessible" and "funnier."

What did politics and public affairs mean to those generations of Americans who first experienced democratic self-rule? Taking their cue from vibrant political campaigns and very high voter turnouts, historians have depicted the nineteenth century as an era of intense and widespread political enthusiasm. But rarely have these historians examined popular political engagement directly, or within the broader contexts of day-to-day life. In this bold and in-depth look at Americans and their politics, Glenn Altschuler and Stuart Blumin argue for a more complex understanding of the "space" occupied by politics in nineteenth-century American society and culture. Mining such sources as diaries, letters, autobiographies, novels, cartoons, contested-election voter testimony to state legislative committees, and the partisan newspapers of representative American communities ranging from Massachusetts and Georgia to Texas and California, the authors explore a wide range of political actions and attitudes. They consider the enthusiastic commitment celebrated by historians together with various forms of skepticism, conflicted engagement, detachment, and hostility that rarely have been recognized as part of the American political landscape. Rude Republic sets the political parties and their noisy and attractive campaign spectacles, as well as the massive turnout of voters on election day, within the communal social structure and calendar, the local human landscape of farms, roads, and county towns, and the organizational capacities of emerging nineteenth-century institutions. Political action and engagement are set, too, within the tide of events: the construction of the mass-based party system, the gathering crisis over slavery and disunion, and the gradual expansion of government (and of cities) in the post-Civil War era. By placing the question of popular engagement within these broader social, cultural, and historical contexts, the authors bring new understanding to the complex trajectory of American democracy.

Tort Law & How It's Tied to Our Culture is a socio-legal history of the norms, customs, and eventual private laws for wrongs, or Tort. Oliver Wendel Holmes described law as "a grand anthropological document." This can be said with even greater force of Tort Law, the most dynamic field within the Common Law. Whether in the form of an unwritten lesson of a myth or folktales, or rendered as written law, Tort Law reflects a culture's superego, a guide to what individuals might forego doing in the interest of a community's safety, dignity and prosperity. The work provides an entertaining and scholarly tour of Tort Law from its beginnings in the unwritten oral traditions of folktale and myth, through the ancient law codes of Mesopotamia and the cohering work of the Greeks and the codifications of the Romans and later Gothic groups, to early religious recitations of behavioral ethics. Separate treatment is afforded the vital role of the Common Law in an increasingly statutory age, exemplary or punitive damages, and the congruence between the application of tort-type remedies in the English-speaking Common Law nations and the significant number of Civil Code nations applying law more directly descended from Roman Law and the Napoleonic Code.
