Die umfangreiche Erschlie ung der einheimischen Waldressourcen in Brasilien hat zu einem R ckgang des Angebots an den am h ufigsten verwendeten Holzarten in verschiedenen Sektoren gef hrt, insbesondere im Baugewerbe und in der M belindustrie. Die unmittelbarste Alternative war die Verwendung von Aufforstungsholz, das aus Eukalyptus- und Pinus-Arten gewonnen wurde, die in den s dlichen und s dwestlichen Regionen des Landes verf gbar sind. Die meisten dieser Arten weisen jedoch keine ausreichenden physikalischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften auf, um die genannten Verwendungszwecke zu erf llen. In diesem Zusammenhang besteht das Hauptziel des vorliegenden Buches darin, zu zeigen, dass es m glich ist, Holz-Polymer-Verbundwerkstoffe (WPC) zu erhalten, die hnliche oder bessere physikalische und mechanische Eigenschaften aufweisen als unbehandelte Holzarten aus den Wiederaufforstungsgebieten Brasiliens. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, wurden Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis und Eucalyptus grandis impr gniert, die eine kompatible Dichte aufweisen und in gro en Mengen verf gbar sind, um eine solche Verarbeitung zu erm glichen. Dabei wurden polymere Monomere aus Styrol und Methylmethacrylat mit Benzylperoxid eingesetzt, das als Initiator im Polymerisationsprozess fungiert.
