Christianity and American Democracy

Christianity and American Democracy

Hugh Heclo; Theda Skocpol

Harvard University Press
2009

Christianity, not religion in general, has been important for American democracy. With this bold thesis, Hugh Heclo offers a panoramic view of how Christianity and democracy have shaped each other.Heclo shows that amid deeply felt religious differences, a Protestant colonial society gradually convinced itself of the truly Christian reasons for, as well as the enlightened political advantages of, religious liberty. By the mid-twentieth century, American democracy and Christianity appeared locked in a mutual embrace. But it was a problematic union vulnerable to fundamental challenge in the Sixties. Despite the subsequent rise of the religious right and glib talk of a conservative Republican theocracy, Heclo sees a longer-term, reciprocal estrangement between Christianity and American democracy.Responding to his challenging argument, Mary Jo Bane, Michael Kazin, and Alan Wolfe criticize, qualify, and amend it. Heclo’s rejoinder suggests why both secularists and Christians should worry about a coming rupture between the Christian and democratic faiths. The result is a lively debate about a momentous tension in American public life.
Nature and History in American Political Development

Nature and History in American Political Development

James W. Ceaser; Theda Skocpol

Harvard University Press
2008
nidottu
In this inaugural volume of the Alexis de Tocqueville Lectures, political scientist James Ceaser traces the way certain ideas, including nature, history, and religion—which he calls foundational ideas—have been understood and used by statesmen and public intellectuals over the course of American history, from the Puritans to the current day. Ceaser treats these ideas not as pure concepts of philosophy or theology, but rather as elements of political discourse that provide the ground or ultimate appeal for other political ideas, such as liberty or equality. At times, they have critically influenced the course of American political development, offering various opportunities and constraints for political leaders. Ceaser traces the histories of these ideas and their relation to other ideas, to practices, and to the fortunes of successive partisan regimes. Three critical commentators—historian Jack Rakove and political theorists Nancy Rosenblum and Rogers Smith—challenge Ceaser’s arguments in several ways. They suggest that other ideas may be considered foundational, and they prod him to clarify further how foundational ideas work politically. Ceaser responds with vigor, and the result is a spirited debate about large and enduring questions in American politics.

THEIA was the Greek goddess of sight. Do not mistake the works in this book to be about the adventurous tales of the ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses. There is not a hero or an evil villain. It does not start in a land far, far away and the finale is absent of The End. THEIA embodies the multiple eyes found in these tales. You will see the life of a saxophone and hear the fleeing footprints of a boy in a forest. You will smell the sweat of two tired travellers and poetically revolt against society's constraints. Within the script, the fictional tale, the poem and the non-fictional story, THEIA will uncast the shadow that controls your vision and allow you to see the four themes explored in a contemporary style. Published by Charlotte Bennett, a creative writer graduate from the University of East London.
