V. S. Naipaul

Fawzia Mustafa

Cambridge University Press
1995
sidottu
This introductory study offers a critical overview of the major works of V. S. Naipaul from 1950 to the present day. Professor Mustafa’s main concern is with literary issues, but historical, political and cultural questions are also addressed, with comparative references to other postcolonial works. Paradoxically, a major segment of Naipaul’s non-western, pro-decolonisation readership seized on negative elements in his thinking, while Western reaction to his ideas and themes led to set notions about Third-World society. Thus, his work has always been the object of radically divergent views, dependent on the perspective of the reader. In examining this issue, Mustafa introduces general debates about postcolonial literary production and its contemporary interrogation of narrative techniques, language, gender, race, and canon formulation.

V. S. Naipaul (1932-2018), born in Trinidad of Indian parents before moving to Britain, defeated the attempts of critics to attach him to a particular belief, society, place, or race. Freed by immigration, he can aspire to a certain universality, using the human condition as his subject-matter; on the other hand, like so many of his central characters, he is free only in the sense of drifting, and the mainly comic mood of his earlier novels is overlaid in his later work by the sadness and realization of rootlessness. In this 1976 study, Michael Thorpe traces Naipaul's development and growth in stature as a novelist who is now recognized as being in a class by himself among Caribbean writers.
V/F Validation - Feimetoden : hur man hjälper desorienterade äldre-äldre

Brock McElheran

McGill-Queen's University Press
1995
sidottu
A meteorological officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, McElheran studied at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich and served at naval air stations in southern England. During a V-1 attack, he was seriously injured when his rooming house in Greenwich was hit. Taken to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, famous for its pioneering work in plastic surgery, he underwent several operations and months of treatment. Earlier in Canada, McElheran worked in operations rooms in Ottawa and Halifax. His memoir also includes previously untold stories of naval warfare off Canada's east coast. Using the journal that he kept at the time as his primary source, McElheran combines personal experience, anecdote, and historical fact in this account of a tense but exhilarating time. Written for the general reader, the mood varies from riveting drama to delightful humour, and the author's personal experiences are placed within the larger historical context of World War II.

Victor Perkins (1936-2016) was a foundational figure for the study of film both as a writer and as an educationalist and teacher who played a key role in establishing film within British higher education.Best known for his 1972 book Film as Film, Perkins has a worldwide reputation within film studies that has been enhanced in recent years by the interest among emerging scholars in the practices of detailed film criticism. His extensive writing in journals and edited collections, spanning sixty years, is less well known, despite its importance and quality, partly because much of it was published in small magazines with limited distribution.V. F. Perkins on Movies: Collected Shorter Film Criticism, edited by Douglas Pye, makes it possible to see his writing as a coherent body of work, developed over a long career, and to appreciate its great historical and cultural significance.Part 1 of the book covers Perkins's early articles from 1960 to 1972, showing the emergence of ways of thinking about criticism and movies that remained constant throughout his career. Perkins was one of a small group of British writers who pioneered the serious and systematic discussion of Hollywood cinema. Beginning at the University of Oxford in the pages of Oxford Opinion, and then in Movie, the journal they established in 1962, these writers mounted a sustained critique of established writing on film, arguing for a criticism rooted in the detailed decisions that make up the complex texture of a film. The work Perkins published in the 1980s and beyond, which makes up part 2 of this volume, was resolute in upholding his critical values. It elaborated his approach in studies of individual movies and their makers and also reflected on major critical and conceptual issues, while maintaining his lifelong commitment to writing accessibly in ordinary language. V. F. Perkins on Movies gives unimpeded access to one of the most distinctive and distinguished of critical voices and will be widely welcomed by academics, students of film, and informed film enthusiasts.

This book consists of an extensive examination of the work and life of one of the most important American political scientists of the twentieth century, V. O. Key, Jr. (1908-1963). The research is based on Key's voluminous personal papers, interviews with his family, colleagues, and graduate students, plus thorough study of all of his published and unpublished writings, much of which is not readily accessible today. Part I offers a narrative account of Key's life from his upbringing and early education in Texas, through his graduate political science training at the University of Chicago and his steady rise as a scholar from the latter 1930s through the end of the 1940s, to his highly productive final fourteen years (1949-1963) at the very pinnacle of the discipline. Part II is made up of five chapters that explore the many aspects of Key's professional career during his peak years, chapters that fully reveal his wise, sensible approach to the study of politics.

Because Naipaul's work occupies such an important place in English literature today, it is necessary to understand the forces that shape his work and the issues with which he is concerned. If this study raises some of the more important questions about Naipaul's work and demonstrates that is cannot be seen as an unproblematic guide to post colonial reality, then it would have gone a long way toward opening up the terrain in which the most meaningful discussion of his work can take place. Like it or not, Naipaul's work represents an important postcolonial impulse/responce that begs to be understood and interpreted.
