First published ten years after the end of the Civil War, "Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman" were among the first memoirs written by one of the prominent Civil War generals. The memoirs caused a lot of controversy, especially because of the author's unfair treatment of General Grant. The purpose of this project is to review, analyze, and compare the military strategies of General Ulysses S . Grant and General William T. Sherman in the context of the ACSC StrategyProcess Model to provide insight into the evolution of strategyand the actual process by which it is derived . This will be accomplished by describing the actions of General Grant and General Sherman principally during significant battles of the American Civil War in the western theater. In a brief backgroundsketch of each general, there will be emphasis on early events that might have influenced strategy development. The final chapter will compare and contrast individual strategies in terms of the ACSC Strategy Process Model and will analyze the way in which General Sherman's strategy complemented that of General Grant to provide the ultimate strategy for winning the war. To this end, some of the parallel events of their lives and careers, and the impact of the close personal and professional relationship that developed during the Civil War will be examined.

Here are the characters and personalities of the three great Union generals, explored with intelligence and wit by one of our most distinguished historians of the Civil War. Mr. Williams is interested not only in military skills but in the temperament for command and, most of all, in moral courage. Each of these men, he writes, "represents a particular and significant aspect of leadership, and together they show a progression toward the final type of leadership that had to be developed before the war could be won. Most important, each one illustrates dramatically the relation between character and generalship." From McClellan's eighteenth-century view of war as something like a game conducted by experts on a strategic chessboard; to Sherman's understanding of the violent implications of making war against civilians; to the completeness of character displayed by Grant, Mr. Williams's absorbing investigation offers a fresh perspective on a subject of enduring interest.

Talking bugs, electricity, the founding of empires, hobos, Nazis, whores, violence, drugs, murder, secret cabals, Heaven, Hell--William T. Vollmann is a writer of enormous novels that are stuffed with entire worlds of creation and destruction. This first ever book-length critical study traces his career to date with chapters devoted to each of his novels, as well as his short stories and major nonfiction. Vollmann is a writer of obsessions, and this study concentrates on three of them--freedom, redemption, and prostitution--while arguing that the author that dwells on them is worthy of being called one of our greatest living American writers. Also included are seven interviews spanning the years 1991-2007 that reinforce the persistence of Vollmann's attraction to these themes.
