August Crull (1845-1923) edited and compiled the first edition of the Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-Book (1889), thus playing a critical role in shaping the hymnic tradition of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod as it transitioned from German to English. This study tells the story of Crull's pioneering labor in the formation of this seminal hymnal and documents the twenty-year journey to its final edition in 1912, which became the first, official English-language hymnal of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.
Varosha, Famagusta: The City of the Vanished. Varosha, a beachfront suburb of the ancient city of Famagusta, was once an international playground for millionaire tycoons and movie stars. But after the Turkish army invaded and took over half of the island of Cyprus, Varosha was abandoned, wrapped up in cyclone fencing and barbed wire, put off limits to any visitor. More than two decades later, Petros, a young Greek Cypriot soldier, is struggling to find his way when tragedy strikes as another Greek soldier is killed on the Green Line separating Cyprus from the Turkish-occupied North. Lashing out, Petros decides to return to Varosha to recover a keepsake that will help him win the heart of his childhood love Joanna-and to prove to himself that there are still principles worth fighting for. But in order to win Joanna, Petros will have to outmaneuver his rakish cousin Elias. And in order to return to Varosha he will have to evade the Turkish military, one of the most ruthless armies in the world.
OCD, anyone? Here, everyone is obsessed with something . . .Twisting in the excruciating abyss of adolescent self-rejection, Kristi Lou Jones was a freakishly tall seventh-grade girl. Agonizing insecurity compelled her to feel grossly unfeminine. Exacerbating her fear of height (her own) was the daily presence of her diminutive teacher who felt unmasculine because of his shortness and over whom she towered. Both viewed the contrast on display Monday through Friday as a cruel exhibition of genomic injustice: Why is he so squat? . . . She stole my genes Now, she's 21 and ready to use her vertical surplus to her advantage. Deciding to take a hiatus from college, she turns to Downtown Secrets, a Detroit brothel operating under the guise of a blues music club. The blasphemous nightspot is pleased to employ all 6' 1" (she prefers 5'13") of Kristi Lou--including her 44-inch legs. While harvesting mounds of cold cash and meeting an array of odd personalities, she indulges her raison d' tre: her obsessions.Soon, this impassioned heretic stumbles into a bizarre milieu of vehicle theft and vengeance-fueled, retaliatory savagery. Who are these mercenaries?Grappling with self-doubt about her venture into harlotry, extreme self-analysis, zealous dogmas about sexual unfairness perpetrated against men, and a near-maniacal zeal regarding atheism, Kristi Lou, whilst coming to recognize her oppressive loneliness, finds humor and warmth as she journeys through a hot August that delivers her to the threshold of answering her question: What am I supposed to be doing with myself?
All's fair in love and war, but they never expected their light-hearted bet to turn dark . . .Seventeen-year-old August Moon was searching for a summer of adventure when she first challenged Landon Jones to a treasure hunting competition. As the friends quickly discover, the long-lost Ruggles treasure is laced with secrets, threats, and betrayal-even a hundred years later. August barrels ahead, despite all the warnings. Menacing letters, an evil ghost, and contraband charges mean nothing if your eyes are dead set on the prize. Even her long-standing feelings for Landon can't deter her, not when finding the treasure means her own car and its subsequent freedom.Soon, August is daring to risk it all-her friendships, her safety, her sanity. Will the determined girl go home with everything? Or will the threats make good and leave her with nothing? The Gold-Laced Secret is the first book of the haunted treasure-hunting series, August Moon. As a coming-of-age tale, it follows August through tragedy and triumph as she grows from an angsty, slightly chaotic teen to a humbled and brave young adult.

Three university students are on their way to place explosives in an important power plant, in an act of terrorism meant to draw attention to their cause, independence for Puerto Rico. The police, forewarned, are waiting for them at the plant, ready to capture them when they arrive, before they can carry out their plan. Once in custody, the students expect to be transported to police headquarters to be questioned, and, in time, to be charged and tried in court. Instead, they are killed on the spot, each shot once in the head, in what appears to be an act of premeditated murder. A few hours later, the governor, the police superintendent, and other high ranking government officials, hold a press conference to announce that a terrorist plot has been foiled by a special police anti-terrorism unit. The superintendent releases few details, but explains that the terrorists were killed when they confronted the agents and attempted to avoid arrest. The official account soon starts to unravel when the press and others start asking questions, including the father of one of the students killed, who is determined to search for the truth and find out who killed his son and the other two students, and why.
