Il n'existait pas de machine capable de les reproduire et de d mocratiser les crits, les rendre accessibles au plus grand nombre. Ce livre n'a pas la pr tention de l'exhaustivit . D'autres s'en sont charg s. Toutefois, il a le m rite de pr senter clairement, p dagogiquement m me, comment on en est arriv imprimer des livres. Et avec quels caract res. En fin d'ouvrage, on aborde les notions de symbolique des lettres, du point de vue d'un auteur en particulier puis du mien.

Panait Istrati a toujours eu le culte du dictionnaire, comme somme de connaissances variees, comme livre instructif mais ludique a la fois. Le dictionnaire a ete aussi pour lui le principal outil d'apprentissage et d'approfondissement des sens de sa pensee et de celle des autres. A 32 ans, il apprenait le francais en copiant un dictionnaire francais-roumain sur des fiches. Quelques annees plus tard, quand il se mettra a ecrire lui-meme en francais, il le fera en ouvrant cent fois le Larousse pour voir comment ecrire tel ou tel mot. Il acceptait neanmoins ces travaux forces comme le sacrifice et la souffrance qu'il avait toujours cru etre l'inevitable rancon du bonheur. Celui d'exprimer sa pensee et de faire entendre ses propres mots. Cela ne lui aurait peut-etre pas deplu de savoir qu'il est lui-meme devenu un dictionnaire.
