Religion; A Brief History: Controversies and Challenges
This book is written by a preacher and teacher both as a source of information for the interested layman and a ready reference for teachers and students. There is no attempt to interpret the greater religions or to place them in any new world order. My purpose is to promote good will and better understanding among people of diverse beliefs. I have tried to highlight briefly the faiths' origin, growth, and extent of dissemination whether extinct or extant. Beyond the study in mostly past religious history, I have dedicated the latter chapters to today's faith challenges; the conflicts and controversies and finally to those positive areas of religious cooperation, mission, stewardship and commonality of purpose. I have scoured sources from Barclay to Beethoven; from St Paul to Saint Benedict; from Left Behind to Nobody Left Behind; from McPherson to Hubbard and from Graham I to Graham II. What a trip Ride with me and hopefully experience a challenging yet fulfilling trip.

In a work of encyclopedic scope, International Trotskyism, 1929–1985 is sure to become the definitive reference work on a movement that has had a significant impact on the political culture of countries in every part of the world for more than half a century.Renowned scholar Robert J. Alexander has amassed, from disparate sources, an unprecedented amount of primary and secondary material to provide a documentary history of the origins, development, and nature of the Trotskyist movement around the world. Drawing on interviews and correspondence with Trotskyists, newspaper reports and pamphlets, historical writings including the annotated writings of Trotsky in both English and French, historical memoirs of Trotskyist leaders, and documents of the Fourth International, Alexander recounts the history of the movement since Trotsky’s exile from the Soviet Union in 1929.Organized alphabetically in a double-column, country-by-country format this book charts the formation and growth of Trotskyism in more than sixty-five countries, providing biographic information about its most influential leaders, detailed accounts of Trotsky’s personal involvement in the development of the movement in each country, and thorough reports of its various factions and splits. Multiple chapters are reserved for countries where the movement was more active or fully developed and various chapters are organized around crucial thematic issues, such as the Fourth International. The chapters are followed by extensive name, organization, publication, and subject indexes, which provide optimal access to the wealth of information contained in the main body of the work.

Robert Tanner has translated Pushkin's classic novel-in-verse, Eugene Onegin, into strict rhyme and meter, while inserting himself as a character/translator into the blank spaces of the work, much as Pushkin inserted himself into his poem. Edited by Val Vinokur and Peter Scotto, who introduces the work.

The Soldier's Manual of Sanitation

The Soldier's Manual of Sanitation

Charles Alexander Gordon; Robert Coleman Eaton

Cambridge University Press
2014
pokkari
This joint reissue comprises two works on military medicine, providing instruction on the treatment of ailments common to soldiers, and methods for preventing their occurrence. The title work, written by Charles Alexander Gordon (1821–99) and published in 1873, is followed by A Guide to Health for the Use of Soldiers by fellow surgeon R. C. Eaton (1842–1902), which first appeared in 1890. Intended to be read by infantrymen and officers, both works offer succinct and practical advice on topics ranging from malaria to drunkenness. The texts take slightly different approaches in their presentation of advice: Gordon adopts a crisp and formal style, while Eaton incorporates instructive medical facts in his brief yet fluent explanations. Together, the works provide an effective exposition of problems and practicalities that would assume tremendous significance decades later in the trenches of the First World War.

Livio Orazio Valentini

Livio Orazio Valentini

An illustrated biography celebrating the life and legacy of a renowned Italian artistIn this illustrated biography of the late Italian artist, Livio Orazio Valentini, Robert E. Alexander and John A. Elliott celebrate the life and legacy of the renowned painter and sculptor while acknowledging his special relationship with the people of Aiken, South Carolina.Born to a poor family in 1920, Valentini lived most of his life in Orvieto, Italy. With no money for a formal education, he became a self-taught artist. At the age of twenty, Valentini was called into military service during World War II. After being captured by the Germans, he was confined in Buchenwald and other concentration camps, where he endured two years of physical labor. For Valentini the confinement was life-changing; he experienced a spiritual awakening that became a lifelong odyssey reflected in his art and teaching.Valentini’s art and even his existence centered on his efforts to find freedom. His paintings, charcoal sketches, and sculptures formed from terracotta, forged iron, tile, or stone are often a statement on the human condition, germination and rebirth, and the negativity and violence of humanity. Valentini often spoke about injustice and oppression through the metaphor of a caged bird, explaining how compassion could overcome cruelty and art could bring healing and hope to conquer fear. While Valentini’s art was well known in Italy and other European countries, it was relatively unknown in the United States until the 1990s, when Aiken, South Carolina, and Orvieto, Italy, became linked after a chance meeting between Valentini and a fellow Rotary Club member from Aiken vacationing in Orvieto. The connection blossomed into a multifaceted exchange program for students and citizens that has celebrated culture and art, including Valentini’s.
