The Lord's Trumpet, Sounding an Alarm Against Scotland, by Warning of a Bloody Sword; Being the Substance of a Preface and Two Prophetical Sermons, Preached ... 1682, by ... Alexander Peden,
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Alexander At The World's End
'Wry and droll, fascinating and funny, by bringing us Alexander's nether parts this novel gives momentous matters unforgettable life' - Ross Leckie'Witty, ironic ... and achieves a deeply felt authenticity' - NEW YORK TIMESWhen his father dies, and he is reduced at a stroke from prosperity to penury, Euxenus decides to leave Athens and seek his fortune elsewhere. As a philosopher and intellectual of some note, he has no difficulty getting a job as tutor to a young prince in the wealthy but utterly provincial court of King Philip of Macedon. The young prince is called Alexander, and the rest is history. Or is it? Alexander conquered Greece, Egypt and the Persian Empire in the course of eight years, amassing a huge army along the way, and leaving behind him the foundations of countless new cities named after him. He proclaimed himself a deity, and died at the age of 33. In ALEXANDER AT THE WORLD'S END, Tom Holt tells the story of two remarkable men, one of whom conquered empires and one of whom struggled to overcome the drainage problems of a small village. It is a story of two men whose paths crossed only briefly, but whose encounter changed both their lives for ever. And it is a story which throws an extraordinary new light on the man who became Alexander the Great.Books by Tom Holt:Walled Orchard SeriesGoatsongThe Walled OrchardJ.W. Wells & Co. Imagine you enter the world of dreams, only to realise you may never get back.Alexander Bottom has heard every stupid butt joke and then some. The remarks have only made him stronger. Malik Ashkar is one of Alex's prime tormentors and leaves classmate, Leanne Chambers, simmering over an insensitive racist comment, a comment that will come back to haunt Malik. The unlikely trio finds themselves thrown together in the adventure of a lifetime, when Nim, the daughter of a Dreamweaver, appears to them from the Dreamscape.Nim proves the existence of multiple dimensions, and a portal through the Dreamscape. The three teenagers' crossover to the medieval world of Trinity, where they must find a way to defeat the evil Lord Drabek and return the planet to peace. Separated on arrival, they are faced with racism on a scale unimaginable. Malik finds the shoe is on the other foot, while Leanne discovers her inner strength, and that there is more to Malik than she ever thought possible. Faced with the same fate that befell his mother, Alexander must find a way to rescue them all from disaster. But one final twist threatens to stop them ever returning home.Throughout the story, their quest becomes epic in scope and our three young travellers are frequently tested. Each must develop, mature and work together in order to triumph.Densely plotted, the story has many surprising twists and turns that will keep the reader's interest until the very last page. While this is an action-packed adventure, the characters have true depth and we get to see their backstories unfold, watching them grow and mature along the way. There is also a strong moral message within the anti-racist elements of the story, making this a truly rewarding experience for the reader. Though this novel is primarily a Young Adult work, it has been classified by some adult readers as a General Adult Fiction adventure. As well as a fantasy adventure, there are sci-fi elements to the story and even a touch of budding romance thrown in for good measure. Above all, there are strong female and male characters to draw and maintain reader's interest from any gender.
