Med innledning og kommentarer av Ørnulf Hodne, Institutt for kulturstudier og orientalske språk, Universitetet i Oslo. Presten, salmedikteren og folkeminnesamleren Magnus Brostrup Landstad (1802-1880) var en av 1800-tallets store kulturpersonligheter og en av våre mest betydningsfulle nasjonsbyggere. Han stod bak to av de viktigste bøkene i nasjonsbyggingsprosessen - Norske Folkeviser fra 1853 og Kirkesalmebog fra 1869. Men hans virke og skrifter hadde en langt større faglig spennvidde og et langt større omfang. Blant hans etterlatte arbeider forekommer dessuten andakter, prekener, dikt, taler, dagbok, nedtegnelser av sagn og skikker og artikler om religiøse emner og om kulturvern. M.B. Landstads liv og virke har gitt gjenklang i norsk kultur- og kirkehistorie for generasjoner av nordmenn. Særlig aktualitet har Landstads skrifter i forbindelse med 200-årsmarkeringen av Norge som selvstendig nasjon i 2014.
