Martin Truefitt-Baker is a fine art printmaker and painter living in the Brecon Beacons national park, South Wales, UK. His linocuts use a reduction method, printing from a single piece of lino. This is progressively cut away and overprinted onto paper several times, in a succession of tones, to build up the final image. The prints are of the animals he has seen on his walks through the local landscape, mostly within just a couple of miles of his home. Martin always tries to catch some of the magic in the way the animal moves and lives within its environment. The beautiful Usk valley, rough mountainsides, twisted trees, wild flowers and busy insects fill the backgrounds of his prints. This wall calendar features graceful owls, foxes, badgers and more. The datepad features previous and next month’s views. Printed on FSC-certified paper.
Following the success of the earlier volume, The Baker Street Epilogue, we have another collection of previously unknown Holmes and Watson tales to excite the interests of readers across the globe - The Baker Street Archive.A decade before his death, Dr. Watson let it be known that with his passing he wished his nephew, Christopher Henry Watson MD, to be the executor of his will and guardian of all his personal and pecuniary affairs. One of the tasks he sanctioned was that his nephew should use his discretion in selecting for publication some of the three dozen or so cases involving Holmes and Watson which had not already seen the light of day.The six stories in this new volume are more overlooked gems. From the seemingly supernatural challenge of The Neckar Reawakening to the seasonal conundrum of The Yuletide Heist, there is, as ever, much to entertain and enthral us.As before, all of these tales are designed to contribute in some small part to the lasting memory of two extraordinary men who once occupied that setting we have come to know and love as 221B Baker Street. When the Second World War broke out, Miss Daisy Baker of Kingsbury County School reached out to every former scholar serving their country. Two hundred Old Kingsburians replied, sending five hundred letters between them. Those letters survive – and they are the subject of this book. To read the Letters to Miss Baker is to follow those former scholars as they trained, travelled, camped, fought, were imprisoned and died in the struggle to save democracy. They may have expected to spend their working lives in London or its environs and might never have travelled abroad. Yet, from 1939 to 1945, they found themselves bumping into each other in the most unlikely of places; fighting in brutal, historic battles, whether on the western front, in the deserts of North Africa or amid the melee of Italy; flying missions to bring destruction upon the enemy, the odds stacked against them, flailing frantically to free themselves from blazing planes; guarding the high seas, shelled, going down with their ship; huddled in secret, decoding messages, providing vital intelligence to the Forces; even ferrying a Prime Minister around. Letters to Miss Baker is a tribute to those Old Kingsburians and to their remarkable teacher.

After a ten-year silence, Joseph Caldwell returns with a rich novel of immense and resonant scope.
After nearly ten years, Joseph Caldwell returns to the literary scene with a rich novel of immense and resonant scope. With Dostoevskyian ambition, Bread for the Baker's Child sets out to probe the large questions of good and evil, culpability and sacrifice, and the meaning of suffering. In this tale of two lives immutably intertwined, Sister Rachel is a nun in a failing order, a painter with a history of madness, devoted to her dying Mother General. Her brother Phillip is an accountant serving time for embezzlement, a man capable of great violence and anger who has turned his back not simply on the church, but faith as well. They have nothing in common except for a shared childhood tragedy. Or do they? In this masterful display of structural precision, Caldwell slowly unravels the complementary nature of these two lives—at first glance hermetically sealed from one another—until their shared fate becomes a symbiotic relationship, as though they were two sides of the same coin, intersecting and reflecting one another. Through events operatic in tone and reach, Rachel and Phillip come to redefine our notions of love and kinship, and embody the human need for redemption and forgiveness. Marketing plans for Bread for the Baker's Child: • Author tour in Northeast area (New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C.). • Newsletter, brochure, catalog, and postcard mailings. • Advertisements in key literary and trade magazines. Playwright and novelist, Joseph Caldwell is the author of four previous novels, The Uncle From Rome, Under the Dog Star, The Deer at the River, and In Such Dark Places. He twice held the John Golden Fellowship in Playwriting at Yale University's School of Drama, and was awarded The Rome Prize in Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lives in New York City.

On 24 August 1867, the remains of eight-year-old Fanny Adams were discovered in a hop field close to her home in Alton, Hampshire. She had been decapitated and horribly mutilated; her limbs and internal organs were scattered over a wide area. It was butchery on a truly colossal scale. Local solicitor's clerk Frederick Baker was quickly apprehended and committed for trial at the winter assizes in Winchester. Few people doubted that he was solely responsible for the murder of little Fanny Adams. Baker was a decidedly odd character, often seen skulking around town exhibiting a range of morbid and eccentric behaviours. His corpse-white complexion and black top hat composed his trademark appearance. This book charts his upbringing, his family life and career, and his depraved emotional and sexual impulses, fully exploring his progression from a weak and sensitive child to a swaggering, intemperate monster. Legal opinion was divided: was Baker mentally deranged, or was he a cunning, cold-blooded and wicked individual fully in command of his faculties? These issues would be examined in the courtroom, and in a sense, medical science itself, with its new ideas about psychological disease, homicidal mania and criminal responsibility, was also on trial. The defence offered a confusing and contradictory double plea of Not Guilty but also Guilty and Insane. The jury rejected both defences, and Baker was hanged outside Winchester prison on Christmas Eve in front of a large crowd. Baker has received remarkably little attention in the extensive literature on Victorian crime. Drawing on Home Office files and making use of a wide selection of local history materials, Trial of Frederick Baker tells for the first time the full story of the murder of Fanny Adams and the trial and conviction of one of Britain's most appalling villains.
