Dynamics of Mechanical Systems with Non-Ideal Excitation

Dynamics of Mechanical Systems with Non-Ideal Excitation

Livija Cveticanin; Miodrag Zukovic; Jose-Manoel Balthazar

Springer International Publishing AG

In this book the dynamics of the non-ideal oscillatory system, in which the excitation is influenced by the response of the oscillator, is presented. Linear and nonlinear oscillators with one or more degrees of freedom interacting with one or more energy sources are treated. This concerns for example oscillating systems excited by a deformed elastic connection, systems excited by an unbalanced rotating mass, systems of parametrically excited oscillator and an energy source, frictionally self-excited oscillator and an energy source, energy harvesting system, portal frame – non-ideal source system, non-ideal rotor system, planar mechanism – non-ideal source interaction. For the systems the regular and irregular motions are tested. The effect of self-synchronization, chaos and methods for suppressing chaos in non-ideal systems are considered. In the book various types of motion control are suggested. The most important property of the non-ideal system connected with the jump-like transition from a resonant state to a non-resonant one is discussed. The so called ‘Sommerfeld effect’, resonant unstable state and jumping of the system into a new stable state of motion above the resonant region is explained. A mathematical model of the system is solved analytically and numerically. Approximate analytical solving procedures are developed. Besides, simulation of the motion of the non-ideal system is presented. The obtained results are compared with those for the ideal case. A significant difference is evident. The book aims to present the established results and to expand the literature in non-ideal vibrating systems. A further intention of the book is to give predictions of the effects for a system where the interaction between an oscillator and the energy source exist. The book is targeted at engineers and technicians dealing with the problem of source-machine system, but is also written for PhD students and researchers interested in non-linear and non-ideal problems.

Trajectories of Empire extends from the beginning of the Iberian expansion of the mid-fifteenth century, through colonialism and slavery, and into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Latin American republics. Its point of departure is the question of empire and its aftermath, as reflected in the lives of contemporary Latin Americans of African descent, and of their ancestors caught up in the historical process of Iberian colonial expansion, colonization, and the Atlantic slave trade. The book's chapters explore what it's like to be Black today in the so-called racial democracies of Brazil, Colombia, and Cuba; the role of medical science in the objectification and nullification of Black female personhood during slavery in Brazil in the nineteenth century; the deployment of visual culture to support insurgency for a largely illiterate slave body again in the nineteenth century in Cuba; aspects of discourse that promoted the colonial project as evangelization, or alternately offered resistance to its racialized culture of dominance in the seventeenth century; and the experiences of the first generations of forced African migrants into Spain and Portugal in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as the discursive template was created around their social roles as enslaved or formerly enslaved people.Trajectories of Empire's contributors come from the fields of literary criticism, visual culture, history, anthropology, popular culture (rap), and cultural studies. As the product of an interdisciplinary collective, this book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in Iberian or Hispanic Studies, Africana Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and Transatlantic Studies, as well as the general public.

In the Survey of Recent Historical Works, which according to custom concludes this IXth volume of the Acta, is a notice of the recent 'Report of the Dutch research, with suggestions for future development'. Such a report could easily be classified as an attempt to bring pressure to bear on financial resources for support of a somewhat neglected branch of scientific effort, indeed as a symptom of the current disease of notatitis. A recent special issue 'Regeren door notas', of the periodical Beleid and Maatschappij, March-April 1976, discusses this severe Dutch epidemic of official note-writing, for any purpose, on any matter, at any time, by any sort of official committee to any sort of official body. But even if such were the only reason for the production of this Report, which indeed it is not, the Report will stand on its own feet, as significant and of consequence. In general, however, this Report makes sad reading. It would seem that Dutch historical research and historiography lags far behind comparable foreign developments. There are said to be immense gaps in knowledge of and insight into virtually all fields of the Dutch past and moreover a total lack of modem sophistication. Inevitably, currently fashionable techniques such as programming, co-ordination, and teamwork are suggested as desirable, and a preference is expressed for the currently highly regarded socio-historical approach.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Baltazar and the Flying Pirates
"I enjoyed the book immensely and found it utterly chARRRRRming A dreamy holiday for a wee pirate with some colorful swashbuckling characters "- Cap'n Slappy, co-founder of Talk Like a Pirate Day "An amusement park beset by pirates is a winning combination. Young pirate apprentices will enjoy this wild ride as Baltazar and his new friends search for treasure....younger pirates will also enjoy having the story read to them as they explore the intricate and wonderful artwork that fills each page." - Pirates and Privateers Ages ago, Greybeard hid his treasure chest from fellow swashbucklers. Ever since, the beautiful Captain and her infamous Corsairs have searched for it, but their map missed the key piece. Tonight Redlocks recruits Greybeard's descendant, young Baltazar, to help locate the long-lost riches. The boy leads the way, but now the bustling amusement park Treasure Island sits atop the buried booty. Join the crew of the flying Cutlass (a legendary cast that includes Hook, Long John Silver, and Black Bart) on a roller coaster to discover where "X" marks the spot. Can Baltazar help them strike pay dirt before their tickets expire? Fans of Pirateology, How I Became a Pirate, Pirates Don't Change Diapers will enjoy this ultimate joy ride. "The best part? The head pirate, Captain Redlocks, is a redheaded woman. Oh yes she is. And she captains the Cutlass, the fastest ship in the skies. Because not only men can be all swarthy and adventurous and brandish swords and wear cool black eye patches....My redheaded daughter and I think this book should immediately be made into a movie, since the stunning illustrations look like animation and the theme park tie-in is just too good for Hollywood to pass up. When it comes out, don't say I didn't tell you so." - Cool Mom Picks "Movies and television shows have altered what captivates and entertains our kids during story time these days. Although classic stories will always make a wonderful addition to any collection, children often look for more engaging visuals and storylines. In the new children's picture book, Baltazar and the Flying Pirates, kids step right into a fun and beautifully illustrated adventure. Baltazar, a young boy with a very imaginative mind, has a dream about pirates and their treasure, bringing readers to an amusement park on a quest to find the pirates' hidden treasure chest despite having an incomplete map and needing to overcome different obstacles. The story looks like an animated film, and the lively drawings prove perfect for inspiring little minds. Your child will not be disappointed by this story; in fact, don't be surprised if you get requests to read it over and over again " - Mom Central
