Le Baron de M nchhausen na t le le 11 mai 1720 Bodenwerder dans le Weserbergland. Son v ritable nom est Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von M nchhausen. Il fut dans sa jeunesse le page du Duc de Brunswick-L neberg. Il suit son ma tre en 1740 pour devenir mercenaire de l'arm e russe. Il combat pendant dix ans dans l'arm e de Catherine II de Russie contre les Turcs de l'Empire Ottoman, en Crim e. Il est nomm en 1750 capitaine de cavalerie avant de quitter l'arm e russe. Lors de son retour en Allemagne, il confie l' crivain Rudolphe Erich Raspe ses extraordinaires aventures. Il se fixe ensuite Hanovre. Le baron tait surnomm le baron de Crac (baron du mensonge): il aurait voyag sur la lune sur un boulet de canon, il aurait galement dans avec V nus. Il p tit norm ment d'une r putation de menteur et de fou due son r cit. Il d c de le 22 f vrier 1797 de la fi vre typho de, ruin . L' crivain allemand Rudolf Erich Raspe, recueille, ordonne et publie ces r cits en 1785 (du vivant du baron de M nchhausen), en anglais, sous le titre Baron M nchhausen's Narrative of his marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. Un an plus tard, en 1786, les aventures sont traduites en allemand par Gottfried August B rger, professeur l'universit de G ttingen. Plus qu'une traduction, il remanie les histoires et fournit une version plus po tique et satirique que le livre de Raspe. Le livre sera traduit de l'allemand en fran ais par Th ophile Gautier fils avec des illustrations de Gustave Dor . Cette traduction est tr s agr able, bien qu'amput e de certains passages jug s trop "politiquement incorrects" pour ses contemporains.
