Equitable Media Literacies

Interrogating three core assumptions made within the field of media literacy—that media literacy practices empower individuals, support communities, and contribute to engaged citizenship within a democracy—this book presents a new framework for equitable media literacy practices. Using the results of a large-scale research project to interrogate these long-held assumptions and explore the connection between impactful media literacy practices and equity, the authors demonstrate the crucial need to shift the focus of media literacy practices from that of individual skill transfer to that of equity-driven community-oriented media practices. They offer a clear framework for embracing equity and inclusion at the outset of media literacy intervention, focusing on the Six E’s Framework, the Equitable Media Literacy Practice Model, and a Field Guide with the five categories for practice: Where Do I Stand, Who Cares, Imagining Inclusive Futures, With Community, and Where Do We Stand. Each category repositions media literacies with explicit focus on inclusion, justice, and the pursuit of equitable futures. This book will appeal to students and scholars studying and researching in the space of media literacy, digital culture, social justice, and equity in media and communication studies departments and beyond, as well as those working at the educational and policy level around issues of media literacy, media education, and civic engagement.

In this highly accessible history of ships and shipping on the Great Lakes, upper elementary readers are taken on a rip-roaring journey through the waterways of the upper Midwest. Great Ships on the Great Lakes explores the history of the region's rivers, lakes, and inland seas--and the people and ships who navigated them. Read along as the first peoples paddle tributaries in birch bark canoes. Follow as European voyageurs pilot rivers and lakes to get beaver pelts back to the eastern market. Watch as settlers build towns and eventually cities on the shores of the Great Lakes. Listen to the stories of sailors, lighthouse keepers, and shipping agents whose livelihoods depended on the dangerous waters of Lake Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Give an ear to their stories of unexpected tragedy and miraculous rescue, and heed their tales of risk and reward on the low seas. Great Ships also tells the story of sea battles and gunships, of the first vessels to travel beyond the Niagara, and of the treacherous storms and cold weather that caused thousands of ships to sink in the Great Lakes. Watch as underwater archaeologists solve the mysteries of Great Lakes shipwrecks today. And learn how the shift from sail to steam forever changed the history of shipping, as schooners made way for steamships and bulk freighters, and sailing became a recreation, not a hazardous way of life. Designed for the upper elementary classroom with emphasis on Michigan and Wisconsin, Great Ships on the Great Lakes includes a timeline of events, on-page vocabulary, and a list of resources and places to visit. Over 20 maps highlight the region's maritime history. The accompanying Teacher's Guide includes 18 classroom activities, arranged by chapter, including lessons on exploring shipwrecks and learning how glaciers moved across the landscape.

Written for parents, patients, dieticians, and neurologists, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone considering or starting a ketogenic diet for epilepsy or another neurologic disorder. Written by doctors, dieticians, and a pediatric nurse practitioner from the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Ketogenic Diet Center, along with several other experts in the field, this book’s patient-centered content contains answers to almost any question related to the ketogenic and modified Atkins diets, for children and adults. Chapters cover implementation, recipes, fine-tuning the diets, connecting with support groups, the latest research on the effectiveness of the diets, and much more. The sixth edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect current advances and applications. Two entirely new sections are devoted to the use of ketogenic diets for epilepsy in adults, and diets that can help alleviate the symptoms of other conditions such as cancer, dementia, autism, and migraines. Coverage of the modified Atkins diet is significantly expanded to reflect the growing popularity of this less restrictive diet.

Why are preservice teachers often told by veteran teachers to "forget what you learned" in teacher preparation programs? Why is there a gap between pedagogical practices employed at schools and those taught at colleges and universities? And why, after evidence from countless studies, are there still so few teachers of color working in our rapidly diversifying schools? These questions are addressed in this book, which describes a reconceptualized teacher preparation program based on a teacher residency model. This model is grounded in three core beliefs: first, that teacher quality is a shared responsibility between universities and school districts; second, that all students have a right to high-quality teachers who are as racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse as the students they teach; and third, that for education to be transformative, future educators must have the right balance of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences grounded in specific contexts.Through a combination of rich description and qualitative and quantitative program data, the authors make the case that university programs focused on the communities they serve can ensure more effective, learner-ready teachers who remain in the profession longer. By providing a detailed blueprint for program development, the contents of this book will be of value and interest to educational leaders, policy makers, and researchers.

Is our work merely a way to put food on the table, or does it have inherent value? Should our work define us? Does it play too large a role in our lives? Does it make us feel more human, or less so? This issue explores the realities of work for people with various jobs, but also probes the reasons people work and what they hope to gain from their labor. From warehouse workers to poets, food delivery specialists to cloistered nuns, farmers to police officers, this issue considers personal, spiritual, and social aspects of one of the most basic human activities. On this theme: James Rebanks prepares to pass on the farm to his children. Benoit Gautier rides a shuttlebus with dislocated French warehouse workers. Shira Telushkin asks why young women today are becoming cloistered nuns. Ben Wray talks to food-delivery riders in three countries about their attempts to organize. John Clair, a police chief, wants policing to be about relationships, not statistics. Norann Voll tells how her father taught her to embrace her blue-collar roots. Maureen Swinger honors the unpaid and unheralded work of caring for an aging loved one. Alastair Roberts recommends the divine rhythm of work and Sabbath rest God established in Genesis. Also in this issue: Adam Nicolson finds a different sort of freedom sailing a sixteen-foot wooden boat. Alister McGrath explores the connection between detective fiction and the spiritual quest. Tish Harrison Warren introduces Stanley Hauerwas to new audiences. Christian Wiman shares a new poem about a glass-eyed monk. Plough Quarterly features stories, ideas, and culture for people eager to apply their faith to the challenges we face. Each issue includes in-depth articles, interviews, poetry, book reviews, and art.
