A Christmas Carol: Special Edition By Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843; the first edition was illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past, such as carols, as well as new customs such as Christmas trees. He was influenced by experiences from his own past, and from the Christmas stories of other authors, including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. Dickens had written three Christmas stories prior to the novella, and was inspired to write the story following a visit to the Field Lane Ragged school, one of several establishments for London's half-starved, illiterate street children. The treatment of the poor and the ability of a self-interested man redeeming himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. There is discussion among academics as to whether this was a fully secular story, or if it is a Christian allegory. Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and miserable age lender in a counting house in 1843 in London, has everything that embodies the joy and spirit of Christmas in rebellion, refusing to visit his merry nephew Fred at Christmas dinner with His family, and giving him reluctantly and denying his poorly paid employee Bob Cratchit the day off to spend Christmas with his loved ones. That night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who died seven years before Christmas Eve and is forced to spend his future life carrying heavy chains forged from his own greedy way. Marley warns Scrooge that he will suffer an even worse fate if he does not repent, and predicts that he will be pursued by three spirits who will help him to reflect and guide him.

While Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson sit comfortably by their fireplace on the evening of December 24th of 1894, Dr. Watson's memory of previous Christmas Eves draws forth an unexpected response from his companion. Holmes, normally very reticent to speak about his early life, meditatively recalls a particular incident that happened on the same date in his own past: that when he was a very young man, before ever meeting Watson, he had occasion to meet and to be of great service to none other than a very old Ebeneezer Scrooge.

A Christmas Carol was first published in 1843, and has never been out of print since. On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of its publication, Jo Kneale has taken the original text and looked at it from the point of view of a home loving, cosy creating reader. A (Hygge) Christmas Carol is her personal take on the story. Looking at the original text and commenting on the elements that speak most to her and still have much to say to us as readers today, Jo finds that Charles Dickens small volume punches above its weight, and shows us that the Spirits of Christmas can teach us all, if we choose to hear them. The original copyright free text is included in the book, along with Jo's essays on universal themes of family, comfort, love and charity.
This story is inspired by A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The characters are the same, but the story is different. Very different. In this version of A Christmas Carol Marley is alive and kicking, encouraging and helping Scrooge to be that much meaner. Double trouble. The original paranormal Christmas fantasy. A NEW VERSION of A Christmas Carol. Scrooge is meaner than ever but so are the ghosts. "Not to be missed." Dianne's review Nov 07, 155 of 5 starsbookshelves: author-review, author-gift, great-dialogue, holiday-theme, own Read in November, 2015 - I own a copyA.J. Gallant tackles a brave venture in his version of the events that changed Ebenezer Scrooge and he has come out a victor A New Version of A Christmas Carol, adds more color, more characters and, more ghosts Meet this version of Scrooge, along with his partner in nastiness, Marley as they revel in destroying lives, and pinching every penny until it turns blue. Bob Cratchet is still working for them, and Tiny Tim is just as ill, just as adorable and kind-hearted, but we also get to see him as a little boy, longing for friends and to be able to have snowball fights like the other boys. This Scrooge is not visited by three ghosts; he gets several, revealing just how awful he was. Will this Scrooge see the error of his ways before it's too late or will he succumb to the darkness waiting gleefully to torture him for eternity? What secrets do Scrooge and Tim share?A.J. Gallant has taken a wonderful tale and given it a more dramatic spin, while applying his own brand of darkness, charm and fantasy. Well-told, with a few surprises along the way, this is like a new and improved version of a timeless classic, with more ghosts, more life altering events, all while keeping in the spirit of the season. Get to know each character better, while you are at it Most of the characters are back in this NEW version of A Christmas Carol. The story's delivery is different than the original though just as entertaining. Marley is alive and just as cantankerous as Scrooge, feeding off one another and making everyone around them miserable. Even grave robbing is not too dastardly for these two.
