Die Erzahlungen Catherine Bernards stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Studie, wahrend dem lyrischen und dramatischen Werk der Autorin lediglich ein summarischer Uberblick gewidmet wurde. Textimmanent wurden sowohl formale (Stil, narrative Techniken und Strukturen, Perspektiven) als auch inhaltliche Aspekte parallel untersucht: die Liebeskonzeption, damit sich beruhrende Fragen der Ethik ( "interet, vertu"), die Suche nach dem Gluck sowie gesellschaftskritische Ausserungen der Autorin.Um die Erzahlungen nicht isoliert erscheinen zu lassen, wurden sie mit 15 Romanen der Zeit (entstanden 1687-1696) verglichen. Zusatzlich mit einbezogen wurde die 1683 erschienene erste koharente Romantheorie des 17. Jahrhunderts "Les Sentiments sur les lettres avec des scurpules sur le style" des Sieur Du Plaisir."
