While in exile on St Helena, Napoleon dictated a commentary on the wars of Julius Caesar, later published in 1836. In each chapter he summarized the events of one campaign, then added comments from the standpoint of his own military knowledge. Over the nearly two millennia between Caesar and Napoleon some aspects of warfare had changed, notably the introduction of firearms. But much remained the same: the rate of movement of armies (at the foot pace of horse or man); human muscle power as the main source of energy for construction work; some military techniques, notably bridge construction; as well as the actual territory fought over by Caesar and later by Napoleon. Napoleon's commentary thus provides a fascinating and highly authoritative insight into Caesar's wars, as well as providing a window into Napoleon's own thinking and attitudes. Napoleon in places detects mistakes on the part of Caesar and his enemies, and says what they should have done differently. Remarkably, this is thought to be the first full English translation of Napoleon's work. Napoleon Bonaparte was born to an obscure Corsican family but rose through the ranks of the French army to become Emperor of France, conqueror of most of Europe and acknowledged military genius. He wrote this book while in exile on St Helena.The translator. RA Maguire, is a former civil engineer with a longstanding interest in military and ancient history.

Am fost ntrebat care este "prima față" a imigranților rom ni din Anglia, dacă cartea mea abordează "cealaltă față"? Ei bine, prima față a imigranților rom ni din Anglia este văzută n țara lor, n Rom nia: c nd acești rom ni se ntorc n țară, imaginea unora dintre ei este foarte bine descrisă de expresii precum: OPULENȚĂ, LUX, PROSPERITATE. C nd i vezi, ai impresia că n fața ta sunt o mulțime de oameni de afaceri cu mașini de lux care se nghesuie n parcările centrelor comerciale și pe străzile orașului. n verile anilor trecuți, am avut impresia că Forumul Economic de la Davos s-a mutat din Elveția n Rom nia, la Rădăuți, orașul din Bucovina n care m-am născut, unde imaginea descrisă mai sus poate fi văzută n toată splendoarea ei Odată ieșiți din bolizii lor de lux, imigranții rom ni din Anglia și etalează hainele, pantofii și telefoanele scumpe. Dacă ar fi să privești această imagine, ai fi tentat să spui că Anglia este probabil paradisul pierdut al omului... Nu mă nțelegeți greșit Nu-i judec pe rom nii care muncesc n Anglia pentru opulența, luxul și bogăția de care dau dovadă n Rom nia Am scris despre opulență și lux pentru a contrasta cealaltă față a monedei, cealaltă jumătate a realității, cea a imigranților rom ni din Anglia, trăită n Anglia, acea față a realității care nu este vizibilă n sau din Rom nia: 1.Prețul real plătit de unii imigranți rom ni pentru opulența și luxul etalat n țara de origine. Acest preț este un altfel de preț care nu se exprimă n lire sterline, ci n viața pe care o trăiesc prin contactul direct cu locuințele și atmosfera neprietenoasă din unele share-houses britanice. Prețul plătit pentru munca (uneori enormă) depusă n locurile de muncă pe care le ocupă și n orașele n care trăiesc. Prețul plătit prin "conflictul" n care intră acești rom ni cu diferitele aspecte culturale și sociale la care nu se pot adapta sau se adaptează cu mare dificultate, sau prețul plătit de acești rom ni atunci c nd nu suportă vremea din Anglia...2.Comportamentul unor imigranți n relațiile cu alți imigranți rom ni - faptul că unii imigranți rom ni nu respectă alți imigranți rom ni, de exemplu, sau că unii dintre ei nu sunt corecți n micile lor "afaceri" cu alți imigranți rom ni din Anglia atunci c nd și sub nchiriază camerele n case de tip share-house, este un alt exemplu. Această carte este o carte unică prin subiectul abordat (nimeni nu a mai scris așa ceva p nă acum), o carte care vrea să arate și reversul medaliei: realitatea trăită de imigranții din Anglia, realitatea pe care rom nii trebuie să o trăiască pentru a face rost de lirele de care au nevoie pentru o viață mai bună pentru ei și pentru copiii lor. Prin intermediul acestei cărți, englezii au ocazia de a-și cunoaște propria țară ntr-un mod diferit: prin ochii, perspectivele, viziunea și experiențele imigranților rom ni de aici, iar rom nii, n special cei care doresc să vină n Anglia, au ocazia să vadă REALITATEA așa cum este ea percepută de rom nii care au avut curajul să-și expună propriile lor experiențe n paginile acestei cărți.

Exploring and understanding how medieval Christians perceived and constructed the figure of the Prophet Muhammad is of capital relevance in the complex history of Christian-Muslim relations. Medieval authors writing in Latin from the 8th to the 14th centuries elaborated three main images of the Prophet: the pseudo-historical, the legendary, and the eschatological one. This volume focuses on the first image and consists of texts that aim to reveal the (Christian) truth about Islam. They have been taken from critical editions, where available, otherwise they have been critically transcribed from manuscripts and early printed books. They are organized chronologically in 55 entries: each of them provides information on the author and the work, date and place of composition, an introduction to the passage(s) reported, and an updated bibliography listing editions, translations and studies. The volume is also supplied with an introductory essay and an index of notable terms.
