Silent Fright: A Memoir

A true story of quiet courage, fear, shame, and ultimate hope. Christie was a shy, vibrant, happy young girl when she met Chad. He was handsome, popular, and athletic, but her childhood sweetheart turned out to be a monster behind closed doors once they married. She told no one of her circumstances, and suffered silently for ten toxic years.Christie's husband worked tirelessly to dim her bright internal light, and the daily assaults on her self-esteem ultimately led to a revengeful affair. His horrible temper and vicious words hurt even more than being pushed down the stairs or having the air choked out of her. The blistering shame she felt kept her off balance, unable to trust anyone, and altered her life's path forever.Silent Fright is a story of abuse, and also a story of leaving, and finding the strength to carry on. No longer ashamed or frightened by what she went through, Christie reveals in this memoir her most secret and buried memories in hopes that she might help others who are suffering abuse and needing hope in their lives. We are all perfect in our imperfections, and we all have a story that haunts us. Here's hers.
Writing the Landscape

Writing the Landscape

Women novelists were among the most popular authors of the First Republic and First Empire, yet they are frequently overlooked in favour of their canonical male counterparts. Their penchant for sentimental novels has led some later critics to take their writing at face value as apolitical and domestic, at odds with France's violent convulsions. Furthermore, their carefully crafted presentation of natural settings has, thus far, been dismissed completely. Yet, as Christie Margrave shows, the natural landscape was far from being a casually chosen backdrop for writers such as Cottin, Genlis, Kr dener, Souza and Sta l. Rather, the 'escape into nature' given to their female protagonists was a means to expose and confront the everyday reality and emotional suffering faced by women in the Revolutionary decade and Napoleonic Empire. By highlighting self-expression, and by celebrating the figure of the melancholic wanderer, the social misfit, or the visionary, in the setting of an often tempestuous Nature, they also exerted substantial influence on the literary Romanticism which was soon to capture the European imagination.Christie Margrave is a Lecturer in French at the Australian National University.

'A wildly entertaining and necessary book' Elizabeth Day, author of Magpie An honest conversation about Christie Watson's journey through midlife and how to navigate new challenges of a changing body. It lays bare the exhilaration, agony, wonder and fears of being a middle-aged woman with a wild heart, a changing body and a new set of challenges. 'Fascinating... a much needed conversation between generations' THE TIMESHow can we communicate when things are so painful? How can we connect when generational differences are extreme? How do parents and teenagers - and all of us - have real conversations? When Rowan was sixteen, she only tolerated communication from her mother in the form of Snapchat. Desperate to be closer to her daughter, Christie sent daily selfies of her face superimposed onto a chicken nugget. It took serious illness for them to finally talk – and truly listen.Rowan's mental health struggles revealed the chasm between their generations. They started being more honest with each other than they had ever been before: discussing identity, race, gender and neurodivergence; opening up about disordered eating and self-harm; navigating the perils of social media. In an age of polarisation, this is how a mother and daughter find humour in the things that divide them and become more hopeful about the future of our world.A book for all parents and teenagers going through a tough time, for friends, grandparents, teachers and healthcare professionals who want to help, its bare honesty will have you laughing – and possibly crying – out loud as it shows that you are not alone.'I loved this book and I know it will help many families during difficult times' JULIA SAMUEL'Incredibly brave, generous and important' CLOVER STROUD'It made me cry, laugh and hug my daughter extra tightly' BRYONY GORDON
