The lives of two women from very different worlds collide in the illusionary paradise of a Mexican resort. Sarah, a Canadian wedding guest, is a shot glass half empty. Adriana, a fastidious and vivacious hotel floor manager, finds solace in establishing order. At first glance, they're simply animated, but looking closer reveals the anxieties they're trying to hide. When their worlds collide, everything they've kept hidden comes into sharp focus.A bilingual play in English and Spanish, each woman speaks in her own language and shares her unique experiences directly with the audience. Their vastly different realities are reflected in parallel, coming together to mirror and magnify a mutual pain. Through nuanced and surprisingly funny monologues, Quintana and Zelaya-Cervantes focus an attentive microscope on female strength and solidarity to stunning effect.

Christine Longaker's experience with death and care of the dying began in 1976 when her husband was diagnosed with acute leukemia at the age of twenty-four. Since his death, she has devoted her life to ease the suffering of those facing death. In Facing Death and Finding Hope, she clearly and compassionately identifies the typical fears and struggles experienced by the dying and their families. The core of this book is presented in "Four Tasks of Living and Dying," using the Tibetan Buddhist perspective on death to provide a new framework of meaning. A book of great depth and grace, it is destined to become a classic in the literature on death and dying.

Maxwell Unger has always loved the night. He used to do brave things like go tramping through the forest with his Gran after dark. He loved the stories she told him about the world before the Destruction--about nature, and books, and the silver owls. His favorite story, though, was about the Owl Keeper.Max's Gran is gone now, and so are her stories of how the world used to be. The forest is dangerous, the books Gran had saved have been destroyed, the silver owls are extinct, and Max is no longer brave. But when a mysterious girl comes to town, he might just have to start being brave again. The time of the Owl Keeper, Gran would say, is coming soon.
Ada® in Practice

Ada® in Practice started lifeas a case studies report, the result of work per formed under government contract at SofTech, Inc. as part of an effort to identify and resolve issues related to Ada usage. Although that report has now evolved into a book intended for a more general audience, its objectives are largely unchanged. Asbefore, the primary goal is to promote effective use of Ada, both in general programming and design practice and in embedded computer systems specifically. Many features of Ada will be new to pro grammers and designers familiar with other languages; the program examples presented in the case studies are intended to serve as guidelines for proper usage of such features while pointing out common misconceptions and programming errors. In addition, we hope that this book as a whole will highlight the advan tages of using Ada at all stages of a program's life cycle, from problem analysis through testing and maintenance. However, it does not purport to hold all the answers to questions ofAda application;areas that would benefit from further investigation or more definitive guidelines are also suggested.
Drug Education in Schools

Drug Education in Schools

Christine Eiser; J. Richard Eiser

"Double Take" is a drug education package produced by the Department of Health and Social Security (United Kingdom). This video package was distributed at no cost to all secondary schools catering to students from eleven years onwards in England and Wales during 1986. This book reports the results of a research evaluation of this educational package, particularly in terms of its acceptability to teachers and pupils. The evaluation discussed in this book was conducted deliberately within the context of organizational and methodological restrictions. The primary concern was less with the potential effectiveness of "Double Take" under optimal conditions. Rather, the investigators were interested in the ways in which teachers themselves chose to adopt and integrate the package within existing courses and with the restrictions of pupils in their schools.
Robust Planning and Analysis of Experiments

Robust Planning and Analysis of Experiments

Christine H. Mueller

Author-approved bcc: Robust statistics and the design of experiments are two of the fastest growing fields in contemporary statistics. Up to now, there has been very little overlap between these fields. In robust statistics, robust alternatives to the nonrobust least squares estimator have been developed, while in experimental design, designs for the efficient use of the least square estimator have been developed. This volume is the first to link these two areas by studying the influence of the design on the efficiency and robustness of robust estimators and tests. It shows that robust statistical procedures profit by an appropriate choice of the design and that efficient designs for a robust statistical analysis are more applicable. The classical approaches of experimental design and robust statistics are introduced before the areas are linked. Dr. Christine H. M ller teaches at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Free University of Berlin and is a member of the research project on "Efficient Experiments in Industrial Production." From 1988-1991, she worked as a biometrician at the Medical Department of the Free University of Berlin.

The Extinction of Experience: Being Human in a Disembodied World
We embraced the mediated life--from Facetune and Venmo to meme culture and the Metaverse--because these technologies offer novelty and convenience. But they also transform our sense of self and warp the boundaries between virtual and real. What are the costs? Who are we in a disembodied world? In The Extinction of Experience, Christine Rosen investigates the cultural and emotional shifts that accompany our embrace of technology. In warm, philosophical prose, Rosen reveals key human experiences at risk of going extinct, including face-to-face communication, sense of place, authentic emotion, and even boredom. Considering cultural trends, like TikTok challenges and mukbang, and politically unsettling phenomena, like sociometric trackers and online conspiracy culture, Rosen exposes an unprecedented shift in the human condition, one that habituates us to alienation and control. To recover our humanity and come back to the real world, we must reclaim serendipity, community, patience, and risk.
