The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley
The legendary relationship at the heart of a major motion picture. In The Colonel, Alanna Nash, the author of Golden Girl: The Story of Jessica Savitch, explores in depth the amazing story of Colonel Tom Parker, the man behind the legend and the myth of Elvis Presley. The result is a book that reads like the most riveting of real-life detective stories--one that will completely change your view of Presley's life, success, and death. While scores of books have been written about Elvis Presley, this is the first meticulously researched biography of Tom Parker written by someone who knew him personally. And for anyone truly interested in the performer many consider the greatest and most influential of the twentieth century, it is impossible to understand how Elvis came to be such a phenomenon without examining the life and mind of Parker, the man who virtually controlled Elvis's every move. Alanna Nash has been covering the story of Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker since the day of Presley's funeral in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the first journalist allowed to view Presley's body, a compelling and surprising sight. But the profile of Parker attending the funeral in a Hawaiian shirt and a baseball cap was even stranger, and led her to investigate the man behind the myth. It has been known for years that Thomas Andrew Parker was, in fact, born in Holland as Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk. But Nash has dug much deeper and, in a masterpiece of reporting, unearthed never-before-seen documents, including Parker's army records and psychiatric evaluations, and the original police report of an unsolved murder case in Holland that lies at the heart of the Parker mystery. In the process of weighing the evidence, she answers the biggest riddle in the history of the music industry, as it becomes clear that every move Parker made in the handling of Elvis Presley--from why he never allowed Elvis to perform in Europe, to why he didn't halt Elvis's drug use, to why he put him in so many mediocre movies, and even the Colonel's direction of Presley's army career--was designed to protect Parker's own secrets. Filled with startling new material, her book challenges even the most familiar precepts of the Presley saga--everything we presumed about Parker's handling of the world's most famous entertainer must now be reevaluated in the light of information Nash reveals about Parker, who cared little for Presley beyond what the singer could do to bolster the Colonel's precarious position as an illegal alien. Elvis Presley, as one of Parker's unwitting victims, paid a major price for the Colonel's past and his overwhelming need to be more important than his client. As a result, Presley was never allowed to reach his potential and died in drug-induced frustration over his stunted and mismanaged career. In this astonishing, impeccably written, and vastly entertaining book, Nash proves that the only figure in American popular culture as fascinating as Elvis Presley is Colonel Tom Parker, the man who shaped Elvis, who in turn helped shape us.

This is one of the great classics of military service during the Napoleonic Wars. The full title of this tome is "ROUGH SKETCHES OF THE LIFE OF AN OLD SOLDIER during a service in the West Indies; at the siege of Copenhagen in 1807; in the Peninsula and the south of France in the campaigns from 1808 to 1814, with the Light division; in the Netherlands in 1815; including the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo: with a slight sketch of the three years passed by the army of occupation in France, etc." This reprint is taken from the first edition (1831) of this important work, and as a first-hand account of the Light Division's campaigns it deserves to be read by all who appreciate 'Sharpe' - the British television drama - and the exploits of what became the most famous unit in the Peninsular War: the Light Division. Formed around the 43rd and 52nd Light Infantry and the 95th Rifles, the exploits of these three regiments are legendary. Over the next 50 months, the division would fight and win glory in almost every battle and siege of the Peninsular War.Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Leach with this memoir gives a first-hand account of the newly formed light infantry division, at an interesting and turbulent time for the division. Leach gives here an unbroken narrative; almost every scene recounted in this work was one to which he was an eyewitness and recorded in his journal. For other scenes, the author utilised the logbooks of his brother officers.

From a true hero with a military career that bridges five decades comes a titanic story of survival; a compassionate leader with unsurpassed integrity who was "... made of steel, dipped in stardust."In this book, compiled by the granddaughter of Colonel Shreve, are the original diaries he kept in Cabanatuan Camp plus the historical context before and after the War and what went on in the amazing MIS-X Underground. It is a vivid tribute to the remarkable life of Colonel Arthur L. Shreve, Jr. -a story you will not soon forget. Born in Baltimore City in 1897, Arthur eventually drops out of high school and begins a journey that will literally change history. He joins the National Guard in 1917, and then transfers to the Signal Corps so he can fly in WWI. And, so- his long career begins...which leads him back in 1941 to be one of the first officers to combat Japanese forces in World War II. Taken captive after the American surrender in the Philippines] suddenly Arthur's life becomes an unforgettable tale of guts, American ingenuity and bravery for 1,300 unbearable days and nights as a POW under conditions of incomprehensible brutality. Yet- he continues to fight, caring for the men entrusted to him, enduring unspeakable torture, malnourishment and disease, as Arthur's bereaved wife Judy confronts her own demons as she raises a family as a single mother on the home front. Despite the odds stacked against him, Shreve was able to resist his Japanese captors, feeding intelligence and equipment to a resistance network in Manila, carrying out sabotage of Japanese communications, and constructing a small radio to stay informed of America's approaching victory. Surviving against unbelievable odds, Shreve never broke faith with his family, his country or his beliefs. Fully aware that discovery of his documents would mean certain death, Shreve compiled a record of Japan's treatment of the Americans with whom he served. He constantly risks everything and hides his diaries in Filipino school books and then buries them. He gets money through the Underground to buy food for his men, and 'listens in' on the Japanese with his home-made clandestine canteen radio. In a final act of justice, Colonel Shreve's testimony concerning Japan's treatment of American prisoners becomes indisputable evidence in the ensuing Pacific war crimes trials and plays a key role in the conviction of his tormentors. The Colonel's Way will reignite your sense of patriotism and faith, proving without a doubt that Americans can endure any hardship. In these remarkable diaries, experience his way of living and being] that will never leave you with regrets. His brand of inspiration: THE COLONEL'S WAY Find out why the light of a hero never goes out.

From the team’s inception in 1903, the New York Yankees were a floundering group that played as second-class citizens to the New York Giants. The team was purchased in 1915 by Jacob Ruppert and his partner, Til Huston. Three years later, when Ruppert hired Miller Huggins as manager, the unlikely partnership of the two figures began, one that set into motion the Yankees’ run as the dominant baseball franchise of the 1920s and the rest of the twentieth century, capturing six American League pennants with Huggins at the helm and four more during Ruppert’s lifetime. The Yankees’ success was driven by Ruppert’s executive style and enduring financial commitment, combined with Huggins’s philosophy of continual improvement and personnel development. The Colonel and Hug tells the story of how these two men transformed the Yankees in their rise to dominance. It also tells the larger story of America’s gradual move from neutrality to entry into World War I and the emergence and impact of Prohibition on American society. This story tells of the end of the Deadball Era and the rise of the Lively Ball Era, a gambling scandal, and the collapse of baseball’s governing structure-and the significant role the Yankees played in it all. While the hitting of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig won many games for New York, Ruppert and Huggins institutionalized winning for the Yankees.
