2020 Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize Finalist Corey Sobel challenges tenacious stereotypes in this compelling debut novel, shedding new light on the hypermasculine world of American football. The Redshirt introduces Miles Furling, a young man who is convinced he was placed on earth to play football. Deep in the closet, he sees the sport as a means of gaining a permanent foothold in a culture that would otherwise reject him. Still, Miles's body lags behind his ambitions, and recruiters tell him he is not big enough to compete at the top level. His dreams come true when a letter arrives from King College. The elite southern school boasts one of the best educations in America and one of the worst Division One football programs. King football is filled with obscure, ignored players like Miles—which is why he and the sports world in general are shocked when the country's top recruit, Reshawn McCoy, also chooses to attend the college. As brilliant a student as he is a player, the intensely private Reshawn refuses to explain why he chose King over other programs. Miles is as baffled as everyone else, and less than thrilled when he winds up rooming with the taciturn Reshawn. Initially at odds with each other, the pair become confidants as the win-at-all-costs program makes brutal demands on their time and bodies. When their true selves and the identities that have been imposed on them by the game collide, both young men are forced to make life-changing choices.

At its core, Starwalker is a story of self-discovery, resilience, and community, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and love. As Star navigates their path of self-discovery, they realize that what they've been searching for is more than just a stage -- it's a home and a community where they can be fully themselves. The love story interwoven throughout highlights the beauty of embracing both romantic love and the chosen family that forms within Queer communities. Through soaring music, a heartfelt journey, and fierce drag performances, Starwalker invites audiences to embrace the beauty of living authentically and fearlessly in a world that often tries to silence those who dare to stand out.

"The book's framing is urgent and intriguing, reminiscent in some ways of the novels of Chuck Palahniuk."-KirkusMost self-help books will describe remedies and issue lessons to escape the perverted spiral of depression and anxiety. They will aim at improving the quality of one's life and inform choices and states of mind that nurture a healthy and productive psyche. Not this book. Things can always get worse, and baby, they probably will.My life was, is and will probably always be painfully average. I am the glistening standard of what it means to be normal. My grades, my looks, my jobs, my partners, everything, dead-center in the median of ordinary. Most of us are like that, at least that's what Alex says.Oh, Alex? He's my best friend. He's attractive and cool and mysterious and says things that I've thought better than I could ever say them. See, I've always known my mediocrity and was trying to be okay with it. But Alex, he seems to think I'm capable of more. He's my best friend and he's anything but average. He's also kind of a dick.

Alain Locke on the Theoretical Foundations for a Just and Successful Peace

Corey L. Barnes

Alain Locke is most known for his involvement in the Harlem Renaissance. However, he received his PhD in philosophy from Harvard University in 1918, and produced a very large corpus of philosophical work. His work shows him to have been a sophisticated philosopher who thought through practical and theoretical problems regarding the nature of cosmopolitanism, democracy, race, value, religion, art, and education. Although Locke’s philosophical work has been discussed in parts, there has been no theorizing about how his different philosophical commitments fit together. In this book Corey L. Barnes begins to systematize Locke’s philosophical thought, showing how his democratic theory, philosophy of race, and value theory are connected to and undergirded by a commitment to cosmopolitanism. In so doing, Barnes unearths aspects of Locke’s thought—for example, his economic thinking—that have not been accorded attention and reimagines parts of his work about which have been theorized, allwhile bringing Locke into current debates about each subject.
