La Vision Du Monde Chez G. K. Chesterton

La Vision Du Monde Chez G. K. Chesterton

Christiane D'Haussy

This is the first biography in any language of 'Comrade Prince' D. S. Mirsky (1890-1939), who uniquely participated in three distinctive episodes of modern European culture. In late imperial St Petersburg he was a poet, a student of Oriental languages and ancient history, and also a Guards officer. After fighting in World War I and the Russian Civil War, Mirsky emigrated, taught at London University, and became a literary critic and historian, writing prolifically in English, and also in Russian for the Paris-centred emigration, especially as a leading member of the Eurasian movement. His closest literary relationships were with Marina Tsvetaeva and Aleksei Remizov, and later with Maksim Gorky. In 1926-7 he published A History of Russian Literature, written in English, which remains the standard introduction to the subject. While in London he lived in Bloomsbury and knew the Woolfs; he also knew T. S. Eliot, and was the first Russian critic to write about him. Mirsky became a Communist in 1931 and returned to Stalin's Moscow the following year, becoming a prominent Soviet critic, and in particular championing Boris Pasternak. In 1937 he was arrested, and died in the Gulag. This biography draws on much unpublished material, including Mirsky's NKVD files.
D. H. Lawrence and the Art of Translation
This study of D.H.Lawrence as a translator is concerned particularly with the European Lawrence; a writer in touch with and responding vividly to works of European literature which struck a chord in his own creative sensibility. German, French, Spanish and above all Italian he knew well; Russian he failed to learn, despite more than one attempt and in his translations from Russian he always collaborated with S.S. Koteliansky, the Russian émigré. The author is not concerned with the theory of translation as such, but shows how an engagement with the style and sensibility of European authors in the translation process set up a kind of dialectic with far-reaching implications, so that translation came to mean for Lawrence a process of interpretation and evaluation in which his own fiction played an active part. The act of translation not only stimulated Lawrence to define his position in relation to other European cultures, especially the Italian and the Russian, it also served as an important focus of the philosophy of Love and Law set out in his Study of Thomas Hardy. In addition, a consideration of Lawrence's translations of Verga throws new light on the function of dialect in Lawrence's own work. Very little has been written on Lawrence's work as a translator, partly, no doubt, because he was himself anxious that his translating activities should not attract too much attention. It is clear from his own comments, however, that when he undertook a translation he was responding to a specific cultural or linguistic challenge and saw the translated text as meeting some spiritual need not only in terms of his own creative work, but also in terms of the imaginative life of his civilisation.
3-D Audio Using Loudspeakers

3-D Audio Using Loudspeakers

3-D Audio Using Loudspeakers is concerned with 3-D audio systems implemented using a pair of conventional loudspeakers. A well-known problem with these systems is the requirement that the listener be properly positioned for the 3-D illusion to function correctly. This book proposes using the tracked position of the listener's head to optimize the acoustical presentation, thus producing a much more realistic illusion over a larger listening area than existing loudspeaker 3-D audio systems. Head-tracking can be accomplished by applying pattern recognition techniques to images obtained from a video camera. Thus, an immersive audio environment can be created without donning headphones or other equipment. 3-D Audio Using Loudspeakers discusses the theory, implementation, and testing of a head-tracked loudspeaker 3-D audio system. Crosstalk cancellers that can be steered to the location of a tracked listener are described. The objective performance of these systems has been evaluated using simulations and acoustical measurements made at the ears of human subjects. Many sound localization experiments were also conducted; the results show that head-tracking both significantly improves localization when the listener is displaced from the ideal listening location, and also enables dynamic localization cues. Much of the theory and experimental results presented are also applicable to loudspeaker 3-D audio systems in general, not just head-tracked ones. 3-D Audio Using Loudspeakers is of interest to researchers studying virtual acoustic displays, and to engineers developing the same. The book serves as a valuable reference to anyone working in this field.

The Epistemology of G. E. Moore is an examination of the philosophy of G. E. Moore, one of the foremost Anglo-American, analytic philosophers of the twentieth century. This book, together with Reinhardt Grossmann’s Reflections on Frege’s Philosophy and Moltke Gram’s Kant, Ontology, and the A Priori, seeks to redress an imbalance in analytic philosophy by making a case for the relevance of analytically oriented historical studies to contemporary problems. It focuses on Moore’s epistemological writings and aims to present an exhaustive overview of Moore’s work on this topic.
