Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
David Nunan’s dynamic learner-centered teaching style has informed and inspired countless TESOL educators around the world. In this fresh, straightforward introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages he presents teaching techniques and procedures along with the underlying theory and principles. Complex theories and research studies are explained in a clear and comprehensible, yet non-trivial, manner without trivializing them. Practical examples of how to develop teaching materials and tasks from sound principles provide rich illustrations of theoretical constructs. The content is presented through a lively variety of different textual genres including classroom vignettes showing language teaching in action, question and answer sessions, and opportunities to ‘eavesdrop’ on small group discussions among teachers and teachers in preparation. Readers get involved through engaging, interactive pedagogical features and opportunities for reflection and personal application. Each chapter follows the same format so that readers know what to expect as they work through the text. Key terms are defined in a Glossary at the end of the book. David Nunan’s own reflections and commentaries throughout enrich the direct, up-close style of the text.

Cradle of northern Europe's later urban and industrial pre-eminence, medieval Flanders was a region of immense political and economic importance -- and already, as so often later, the battleground of foreign powers. Yet this book is, remarkably, the first comprehensive modern history of the region. Within the framework of a clear political narrative, it presents a vivid portrait of medieval Flemish life that will be essential reading for the medievalist -- and a boon for the many visitors to Bruges and Ghent eager for a better understanding of what they see.
God and Government in an 'Age of Reason'
In this companion volume to Deity and Domination, David Nicholls broadens his examination of the relationship between religion and politics. Focusing on the images and concepts of God and the state predominant in eighteenth-century discourse, he shows how these were interrelated and reflect the language of the wider cultural contexts. Nicholls argues that the way a community pictures God will inevitably reflect (and also affect) its general understanding of authority, whether it be in state, in family or in other social institutions. Much language about God, for example, has a primarily political reference: in psalms, hymns and sermons God is called king, judge, lord, ruler and to him are ascribed might, majesty, dominion, power and sovereignty. But if political rhetoric is frequently incorporated into religious discourse, the reverse is also true: many key concepts of modern political theory are secularised theological concepts. In his consideration of this important and neglected relationship Nicholls sheds new light on religion and politics in the eighteenth century.
Bruno Taut's Design Inspiration for the Glashaus
As a formative exemplar of early architectural modernism, Bruno Taut’s seminal exhibition pavilion the Glashaus (literally translated Glasshouse) is logically part of the important debate of rethinking the origins of modernism. However, the historical record of Bruno Taut’s Glashaus has been primarily established by one art historian and critic. As a result the historical record of the Glashaus is significantly skewed toward a singlular notion of Expressionism and surprisingly excludes Taut’s diverse motives for the design of the building. In an effort to clarify the problematic historical record of the Glashaus, this book exposes Bruno Taut’s motives and inspirations for its design. The result is that Taut’s motives can be found in yet unacknowledged precedents like the botanical inspiration of the Victoria regia lily; the commercial interests of Frederick Keppler as the Director of the Deutche Luxfer Prismen Syndikat; and imitation that derived openly from the Gothic. The outcome is a substantial contribution to the re-evaluation of the generally accepted histories of the modern movement in architecture.

As I started this book, Easter has just passed, the usual sermons offered, the resurrection of Jesus suddenly took on a new life (no pun intended): I wrote a small book on the crucifixion last year, and felt the need to write this one too, not so much as a follow up, for they are naturally very much interlinked - but if Jesus never died there would be no resurrection; no resurrection, Jesus' living or dying would be irrelevant. As with all my books I offer much of the 'usual/expected' material for the subject in hand, alongside which I delve into some of the questions that others may have wanted to ask, but felt they couldn't, or even shouldn't. The whole of our Christian life, and the whole of the scriptures must be relevant to us, otherwise what's the point of paying any attention to them? It needs to be as real as when the disciples first heard the message, and should excite us just as much. No, we were not 'there', no we did not hear or see what the disciples did, but the Bible should come alive to us every time we read or hear it. Something, somewhere should create a spark in our thinking and thus change our living: how this spark manifests itself will be different for every individual - when I get that spark it usually makes me want to write, which usually means a book rather than a few notes. I find it amazing that the Bible is the same Bible as I have read many times before, but every time I delve into it, I see something different - a different thought, a different angle. I rarely ever read a book twice, but not so with the Bible. I have never been woken at 5am or some other silly-o-clock time because of a fresh thought about a book I had read; but I do so on a regular basis after a sermon I have heard, or a Bible passage I read during the day. My wife gets concerned that I spend too much time on my writing; I will get concerned when my drive to do so wanes.

Elliot Jacoby is a corporate video director in mid-life crisis who lies to his clingy girl friend about having leukemia in order to avoid a permanent commitment. But he realizes the lie has spread faster than the phantom disease when a cancer research company, hearing about his "terminal" condition, hires him to write and direct their centennial video. They also want him to make appearances on TV and at charitable events as part of a public relations campaign. Knowing that revealing the truth would destroy his career, he reluctantly agrees. Life becomes even more complicated when Elliot falls in love with Sandra, the company's communications director. Believing there's no future with the "dying" Elliot, Sandra tries to avoid becoming involved with him, but she cannot deny her feelings. He, however, is unable to consummate their love knowing that his whole relationship with her is based on a lie. The relationship suffers even more trauma when a car accident puts Elliot into a coma. In the hospital Sandra learns he never had cancer and, furious for being played the fool, she stalks out of the ICU and his life. Days later Elliot comes out of his coma, and is confronted by a doctor who, reviewing the results of tests performed while Elliot was comatose, confirms the presence of a terminal cancer. Stunned that God would play such a cosmic joke on him, Elliot knows he must put his life in order, open his heart to Sandra and tell her the cancer he invented has become a reality. When Sandra sees his new found honesty she is sure their love can now have a fresh start. But not before telling Elliot she hired an actor to play the role of the doctor who confirmed the presence of the cancer.

In 2019 as part of the celebrations for 105th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, a bronze sculpture entitled 'Angels Unawares' by Timothy Schmalz, was installed in St Peter's Square in Rome. Pope Francis wanted the sculpture to 'remind everyone of the evangelical challenge of hospitality.' The work includes angel wings, through which the author suggests that a migrant is secretly an angel in our midst. The artist's inspiration was He 13:2: "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares". This book is an offshoot of my Home from Home series. Angels were mentioned throughout yet one thing that kept coming back to my mind is the text mentioned above. This small offering could have taken many directions, so please excuse me if I wander a little As always, this book is but a minor addition to any works that already exist. The reader may wish to argue and debate what I offer, which is good, but preferably I would hope that the reader would write their own piece of work so that the public can see this issue from a number of angles.
