In this short autobiographical book, Antoinette Artot decribes her experiences of growing up in a small town environment as the daughter of loving Christian parents. She describes the suicidal feelings of her teens and what seems to be an inevitable transition into a heterosexual lifestyle. It is a tale of innocence and awakening. In later life she experiences a massive identity crisis when she realizes she is physically attracted to women. The book explores issues of relationships and mental illness but eventually she finds the love of her life. Here Antoinette Artot is honest about her naive attempts to fit into a world she does not understand and the chaos that follows as a result. Artot identifies as bisexual because she has lived as a straight woman for half a lifetime. Her relationships with men were happy ones and she considers that part of herself is as relevant as the experience of love with her lesbian partner. For many people, bisexuals are either gay, straight or lying They certainly have a bad reputation with many lesbians, and Ms Artot is at great pains to debunk myths about group sex and unfaithfulness. If you are interested in this sort of coming out story, LGBT autobiography, or just want to get a better handle on bisexuality, this book gives an easy to read and honest view of the psychological issues and emotions experienced by bisexual women. It also tackles issues of biphobia at work and in relationships. Finally, and Ms Artot says, most important, it is a plea to understand ourselves. It hopes that, one day, the lesbian community will accept and nurture those women who are late bloomers, who wake to a world full of promise and a whole series of different mores and behaviours they cannot understand.

This book seeks to examine how Sufi thought might provide critical understanding of contemporary life and a pathway towards the recovery of a more meaningful existence. Rumi's mystical teachings are of great value at a time of rampant materialism and indiscriminate consumerism, and have the potential to illuminate the precarious state of the world, as well as revitalise contemporary social critique, ecophilosophy and biosemiotics in what is increasingly being regarded as a post-secular age.

The Bible says that God met with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, walking and talking with them each day as friends. It was natural conversation flowing easily between God and His creation. But in this garden, we also find Satan casting his shadows of doubt upon man’s heart; the same shadows of doubt that still plague our minds today that leave us wondering: Did God really speak to me? Can I really know Him as friend? If you are tired of living under these dark shadows of doubt, then it’s time to step into the glorious light of communion with God through Spirit-directed prayer journaling. Through sharing some of her most meaningful conversations with God, Amber Desiree Dunleavey will stir your heart to be more aware of God’s voice, to be confident in conversational prayer, and to deepen communion with Him through your own journey of listening to His voice through journaling.

"This original haunted house tale, with a unique plot and compellingly vivid characters, moves from uneasy to creepy to all-out 'keep the lights on' terror." —Library Journal, starred review. In the tumultuous summer of 1974, in the shadowy rooms of a rundown mansion in Rhode Island, renowned psychologist Dr. Piers Preis-Herald brings together a group of seven collegiate researchers to study the inner lives of man’s closest relative-the primate. They set out to teach their subject, who would eventually be known to the world as Smithy, American Sign Language. But as the summer deepens and the history of the mansion manifests, the messages signed by their research subject become increasing spectral. Nearly twenty-five years after the Smithy Project ended in tragedy at Trevor Hall, questions remain: Was Smithy a hoax? A clever mimic? A Rorschach projection of humanity’s greatest hopes and fears? Or was he indeed what devotees of metaphysics have claimed for so long: a link between our world and the next?

"Desiree has elevated the documentary-style ghost-story genre to unique heights." —BooklistIn the summer of 1974, in a derelict Rhode Island mansion called Trevor Hall, a team of scientists taught American Sign Language to a chimpanzee. They affectionately christened their subject “Smithy.” His official name was Webster. The Smithy Project ended in tragedy, some believing that a dark presence inside Trevor Hall had been disturbed. Webster was acquired by CSAM, a research lab in California run by the iron-fisted Manfried Teague. CSAM had a reputation for sullen staff, gloomy conditions, and cruel experiments. Despite this, two of Webster’s original researchers, Jeff Dalton and Ruby Cardini, followed him west, determined to look after their friend. But another entity followed the chimp as well, and in the waning years of the 1970s, “Webster” became synonymous with a menagerie of inexplicable events, strange social movements, curious legal cases, and chilling courtroom testimonies. All were haunted by the question left unanswered at Trevor Hall: Had Webster not only bridged the gap between man and animal, but between this world and the next?

To Defend this Sunrise examines how black women on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua engage in regional, national, and transnational modes of activism to remap the nation’s racial order under conditions of increasing economic precarity and autocracy. The book considers how, since the 19th century, black women activists have resisted historical and contemporary patterns of racialized state violence, economic exclusion, territorial dispossession, and political repression. Specifically, it explores how the new Sandinista state under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has utilized multicultural rhetoric as a mode of political, economic, and territorial dispossession. In the face of the Sandinista state’s co-optation of multicultural discourse and growing authoritarianism, black communities have had to recalibrate their activist strategies and modes of critique to resist these new forms of “multicultural dispossession.” This concept describes the ways that state actors and institutions drain multiculturalism of its radical, transformative potential by espousing the rhetoric of democratic recognition while simultaneously supporting illiberal practices and policies that undermine black political demands and weaken the legal frameworks that provide the basis for the claims of these activists against the state.
