The Rise Of Cities

The Rise Of Cities

Dimitri Roussopoulos

Black Rose Books

The year 2007 marks a new epoch when the majority of human beings on the planet live in cities. What this work explores is how cities coalesce, develop, and thrive, and how they remake themselves for better or worse. The parasitic relationship cities have with nature, the webs of trade and immigration they rely upon to survive, how they feed and water themselves, and how they dispose of waste are examined in a sweeping exploration of what the city is. This book will stand alongside other comparable major studies for many years to come. What is offered is an explanation of cities in crisis. Dimitrios Roussopoulos demonstrates why the state has failed--and must fail--to end the urban crisis. What is analyzed is the spatial structure of the metropolis, metropolitan governance, urban redevelopment policies, housing problems, grass roots activism, the fiscal log jam of cities, and urban planning. How and why decisions are made, and who stands behind them, are questions raised and linked together in a historical perspective unique in studies of the city. The city is the foundation of democracy and citizenship, yet it is widely misunderstood as a geo-political space prone to playing a growing role in shaping the twenty-first century.Dimitrios Roussopoulos is a well-known urban-focused activist. He has worked in the field for thirty years, in several cities, organizing grassroots democratic opposition to mega urban development and the destruction of neighborhoods. Through his public speaking and writings, he has pioneered urban democratization and a new definition of citizenship in the city.

Political Ecology – System Change Not Climate Change

Political Ecology – System Change Not Climate Change

"System change not climate change " This cry reverberated throughout the streets of Paris during 2015's heated COP21 climate negotiations. It was as much a demand as it was an indictment of the failure of existing political institutions to respond adequately to our world's ecological crisis. In an era of slow motion apocalypse, with 3,500 international environmental agreements to date, where did everything go wrong? In this new and greatly expanded edition of his 1991 classic Political Ecology, Dimitri Roussopoulos delves into the history of environmentalism to explain the failure of the state management of the ecological crisis. He explores civil society's various past responses and the prospects for channeling environmentalist aspirations into political alternatives, emphasizing the ideas of social ecology and the central role of democratic neighborhoods and cities in developing alternatives. Ecologists, Roussopoulos argues, aim further than simply protecting the environment--they call for new communities, new lifestyles, and a new way of doing politics. This US edition also includes a new preface analyzing the implications of Trump's presidency for climate politics and an extensive new conclusion analyzing the Paris Accord. Revised, expanded, and updated, Political Ecology is a classic that provides an essential, timely history of the environmental movement now when we need it most.
The French Revolution and the Russian Anti-Democratic Tradition
The political uncertainty following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rejection of the revolutionary model has brought Russian political thought full circle as democratic forces contend with authoritarian nationalism. This volume is essential to understanding the antidemocratic tradition in Russia and the persistent danger of totalitarianism.

Book & CD-ROM. This text has been used in the form of class notes taught to graduate and senior undergraduate students in chemical and mechanical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology for the last three decades. The computer codes, particularly the Navier-Stokes equation solvers, have been continually updated by several Ph.D. students over the last decade. The theory of fluidisation and multiphase flow is based on the new paradigm that emerged in the 1980s as granular flow. Commercial CFD codes, such as FLUENT, already use this theory. However, this theory is not yet complete. Hence the programs described in this text can be easily updated as new theory is developed. For example, the codes can be extended to anisotropic and multi-size particle flow based on the emerging kinetic theories. Hence this book should be useful to research engineers in industry, to graduate students and to professors teaching a first course in computational techniques. In this book the authors illustrate how their code as well as the commercial codes can be used for the design of green energy technology processes.

Dmitry Vasilyevich Grigorovich (March 31 O.S. March 19] 1822 - January 3 1900 O.S. December 22, 1899]) was a Russian writer, artist, and art critic.Grigorovich was doubly an artist. His training as a painter and as the historian of art served him well in depicting the river landscape in every aspect. The landscape is described in all the varying seasons of the year. Many of the word pictures are veritable poems. Village life is also described with humor and realism. This is especially notable when some of the peasants visit the annual market, where episodes of traffic and of drunkenness occur. (wikipedia.org)

In the same vein as Paul Theroux and Robert Olen Butler, some of these stories take place in foreign countries—Zaire (Congo) and Greece—and center on interactions between a host nation and an American visitor. Others are set in the US in the modes of Alice Munro and Tobias Wolff, focusing on human relationships. Each story reveals a main character’s moral center in the face of unexpected events, some of which seem trivial, others vital.
Theory of Control in Organizations

Theory of Control in Organizations

The theory presented in the book deals with methodological and mathematical foundations of control in organisations. It extends the traditional approach of management science by introducing the optimisation and game-theoretical tools for systematic accounting of the special nature of human beings as a control object (e.g. opportunism, selfish behaviour, information manipulation). Formal methods are used to construct robust and efficient decision-making procedures (the, so called, mechanisms), to support all aspects and stages of management activity (planning, organisation, motivation, and monitoring), over all decision horizons, from operational to strategic management. This book reflects modern state of the art theory of control in organisations and is intended for advanced graduate students specialising in management sciences and in applications of control theory and operations research in business administration.
Race, Ethnicity & Impaired Driving

Race, Ethnicity & Impaired Driving

The racial and ethnic composition of the U.S. population is rapidly evolving. This is of substantial importance to traffic safety specialists because there is extensive evidence that the risk of involvement in traffic crashes varies significantly across racial and ethnic groups. Protective and risk factors affecting some groups may not be relevant to others. To be effective, safety programs and educational messages to curb such risks need to be sensitive to the nation's growing cultural diversity. This book reviews the state of knowledge of alcohol-impaired driving among major racial and ethnic groups living in the United States. Although it focuses primarily on impaired driving, it also covers the precursor issue of the differences in ethnic drinking practices. Finally, this book explores the meaning of key concepts that define the problem of the meaning of race, ethnicity, and acculturation; how these concepts are associated with health-related disparities; and how they relate to impaired driving.
