The Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the Making of a President
The Lincoln-Douglas senatorial debates of 1858 marked a significant crossroads in the political career of Abraham Lincoln. Though he lost the Unites States senate seat for Illinois to Stephen A. Douglas, the debates launched Lincoln into political prominence and eventually contributed to his successful run for the presidency. This work reveals Lincoln's political evolution during the debates through a narrative approach, evaluating his debate strategy and seemingly inconsistent views on slavery and racial inequality. Organized chronologically, the book examines each of the seven debates individually, acknowledging Lincoln's disappointing turns at Jonesboro and Charleston but celebrating his powerful comeback at Alton in the final senatorial debate.

The seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held during the Illinois senatorial race of 1858 are among the most important statements in American political history, dramatic struggles over the issues that would tear apart the nation in the Civil War: the virtues of a republic and the evils of slavery. In this acclaimed book, Holzer brings us as close as possible to what Lincoln and Douglas actually said, Using transcripts of Lincoln's speeches as recorded by the pro-Douglas newspaper, and vice-versa, he offers the most reliable, unedited record available of the debates. Also included are background on the sites, crowd comments, and a new introduction. "A vivid, boisterous picture of politics during our most divisive period…This fresh, fascinating examination…. deserves a place in all American history collection."-Library Journal

Ian Michael Spurgeon

With his wild countenance, emotional rhetoric, and outrageous statements, James Henry Lane was a volatile figure in a hotbed of controversy. In 1855, this former Mexican War colonel and Indiana congressman entered Kansas Territory to take a leading role in its quest for statehood, and over the next twelve years he followed a seemingly inconsistent ideological path from pro-Douglas Democrat to Free Stater to pro-Lincoln Republican. His fiery stump speeches and radical ideas won him a Senate seat - along with an army of critics and a cloud that hangs over his reputation to this day.Ian Michael Spurgeon now takes a closer look at this notorious politician to reassess both his position swings and his role in history. Taking readers from the halls of Congress to the bloody plains of Kansas and Missouri, he challenges prevailing views of Lane as a self-serving demagogue, arguing instead that he was a steadfast champion of both the Union and his own conception of democratic principles. In revising popular notions of one of Kansas' most prominent figures, Spurgeon focuses on the last twelve years of Lane's life to analyze his larger political actions and principles - and finds a consistency in his ideals that few historians have recognized. He delves deeper than previous works into key aspects of Lane's career, such as his time in Indiana, his participation in Kansas' constitutional conventions, and his evolving view regarding slavery. And in addition to contending that Lane subscribed to the 1854 Democratic principles of popular sovereignty, he also observes that the Free State Party's nonalignment with national parties made it possible to be a Free-State Democrat - just as it was possible to be antislavery yet antiblack.Ranging widely over the Civil War era, Spurgeon not only challenges views of Lane that have long been etched in stone but also provides insight into such important themes as the breakdown of the Second Party System, the rise of sectional conflict, and the diverging cultures of East and West. He persuasively shows that Jim Lane was not quite the scoundrel that history has made him out to be and offers a new perspective on northern Democrats during a tumultuous period of realignment.

Born in Minnesota in 1890 and raised and educated in Massachusetts, Marjory Stoneman Douglas came to Florida in 1915 to work for her father, who had just started a newspaper called the Herald in a small town called Miami. In this "frontier" town, she recovered from a misjudged marriage, learned to write journalism and fiction and drama, took on the fight for feminism and racial justice and conservation long before those causes became popular, and embarked on a long and uncommonly successful voyage into self-understanding. Way before women did this sort of thing, she recognized her own need for solitude and independence, and built her own little house away from town in an area called Coconut Grove. She still lives there, as she has for over 40 years, with her books and cats and causes, emerging frequently to speak, still a powerful force in ecopolitics. Marjory Stoneman Douglas begins this story of her life by admitting that "the hardest thing is to tell the truth about oneself" and ends it stating her belief that "life should be lived so vividly and so intensely that thoughts of another life, or a longer life, are not necessary." The voice that emerges in between is a voice from the past and a voice from the future, a voice of conviction and common sense with a sense of humor, a voice so many audiences have heard over the years--tough words in a genteel accent emerging from a tiny woman in a floppy hat--which has truly become the voice of the river.
